There's no question as to whether or not people are beginning to use more non-.com domain extensions.
The extension .com will always be the most popular in my opinion, however with the rise of a lot of tech companies using .ai or .io domains, or even country codes being used as URL shorteners (like calend.ly or no_url_shorteners or at one point, instagr.am), more and more people will continue to use other TLDs.
I have access to web analytics to (.ai domains) and I can tell you, the amount of people searching for .ai domains has increased dramatically over the last few years.
The same is true for which ranks for page 1 in Google. Take a look at search volume for .io domains vs other domains with the highest search volume over the last three months:
Query Impressions
.io domain
53,395
.com domain
43,513
free domain
29,680
.dev domain
27,992
io domain
22,998
dev domain
18,616
com domain
13,002
.co.in domain
12,174
.ai domain
12,109
.io domains is actually being searched for more than .com domains, however .com is still selling more because it's what most people are looking to buy when the Google "buy domains."
Hope this was helpful.
