[RESOLVED] - Domain Name Stolen...A Horrible Story and a Warning...

Hi All. I've not been in here for a number of years, but a week ago I had my domain of 20 years (dustie.com) stolen and I have to tell the story. it looks like I'm out of luck here, and out a lot of money, but maybe my story can help prevent this happening to someone else. This happened at Godaddy, though I don't blame them, and i still have all of my domains with them, as well as my websites. I blame the no good slimy thief who stole my domain name!

Here's the story... First off, my name is Dustie, and I've owned Dustie.com since 1998.
Sometime in 2017 (I think) I decided to go ahead and list dustie.com as a premium domain for a high price. It being my name, I wasn't real keen on selling it, but, as they say, everything is for sale for the right price. I'd had someone offer me 5,000.00 for it, but after taxes (it would have put me in a higher tax bracket for the year) and commisison, it wasn't worth it wasn't worth it to sell it for that amount. However, I figured that if someone were willing to pay that for it, maybe someone would pay even more. So I listed it as a premium domain for 20,000.00. I seriously didn't think it would sell but it woudn't hurt to list it (or so I thought).

All was well, until a bit over a week ago. I had been out that evening and didn't get home till nearly 10:00 PM. It was 11:00 before I was able to get onto the computer. That's when I saw the 5 emails from Godaddy.... I'm sure you can imaging my reaction when I saw that, within 20 minutes, my domain name, dustie.com, which I have owned since 1998, sold and transferred for a mere 450.00? I was sick...simply sick. How could this happen! First off, I've never had a domain name sell and transfer inside of 21 minutes and then be paid for it a little over a day and a half later. That's unheard of!

Immediately after reading those 5 emails and realizing my domain name had sold for less then 5% of what I'd had it listed for on Premium Domains, I was online with Godaddy help. Though they were sympathetic, no one there could help. They said I'd have to wait till morning and call auctions help. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well and was on the phone as soon as they opened their office. Though I was on the phone for a good 30 or so minutes with them (a good part of that time on hold), I was ultimately told there was nothing they could do for me. My domain was bought, paid for, and transferred and that was that! (Oh, and this even though they found the price had been tampered with twice that same night, long before I got online). They said this had to be me because no one else had access to that account! That was proof to me that someone was in there messing with my account and screwed me over big time, but not to them.

So I've been sick all week...trying to forget that someone illegally reached into my pocket and stole a lot of money , as well as my NAME! Needless to say, even a week later, I'm just sick about the whole thing.

Today, on a lark I looked up dustie.com on godaddy and was sick all over again when I saw that it is now listed as a premium domain for 12,000.00 (by the person who stole it from me?). That's just wrong, in so many ways! How do I get over this? I want to know how this could have happened!!??

I am posting in here as a warning to you all, as well as wanting to go on record that this did happen, regardless that the guy at [email protected] said that dustie.com had always been listed at 450.00 and it was a legitimate sale! I know how to use GoDaddy. I'm a long time user and have over 50 domain names with GoDaddy, more the half listed as premium domains! Ever since Dustie.com was originally listed as a premium domain at 20,000.00 that was the price that showed up whenever I went to maintain my premium listings. It always stuck out like a sore thumb, because most my other domain names are listed below 1000.00. There is simply no way Dustie.com was ever listed for as little as 450.00. Even go daddy suggested a price of nearly $5,000 as a premium listing starting point for dustie.com.

Without a doubt, my godaddy account was hacked and my domain name of 20 years stolen from me and relisted for 27 times what they paid for it! That burns me to the core!!!

I'm sure that, since this happened to me it will surely happen again. If any of you hear about such a thing, could you please have them get in touch with me? If I can find others that this has happened to, maybe we can do something as a group?

In the meantime, if you have a valuable domain name on Godaddy Premium domains, then you might want to take screen shots of the listed prices. Also, I was told that if I had the original email when it was listed that would be proof that it was listed at 20,000.00. Alas, I did not have it...I had, not long ago, deleted emails that were more then a year and a half old. If you don't have emails for your most valuable domain names, then remove them from listing, then relist them to get a new email and save those emails just in case!!

And Thanks for listening to my very long rant!

Dustie
(was [email protected] for over 20 years...now I am [email protected] and my site is dustie.art ... cool name, but it's certainly not worth what I lost in dustie.com!)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Don't be so gullible guys and really analyze the details of this story.

In the absence of facts, it's best to keep a neutral attitude allowing for the benefit of a healthy doubt to creep in. After all, it's Easter, and as such, a time that calls for emergence of a Good Samaritan Hero.

I call bullsh*t. No one buys a domain for 5 grand and says I will give it back for free because I'm a nice guy. Total BS. Why only ask for the original $450 back when he just put out 5 grand? Don't be so gullible guys and really analyze the details of this story.
I think its simple:

1) op asks Mapledots to sell it to him for $450.
2) mapledots agrees and makes sale
3) everyone happy

If the OP does not ask for the name back in exchange for $450, then it's the OPs fault for not taking the easy approach to fixing this mess.

First people thought Maxtra was a scammer, now people think mapledots is the scammer. Sad.

Nice gesture by @MapleDots but I am waiting for @Dustie to wake up plus @Joe Styler respone on whether there was some sort of wrongdoing involved.

The easy approach for Dustie is asking GoDaddy to reverse the transaction, like @Keith mentioned GoDaddy has done this if there was a pricing error.

Where is Godaddy? @Joe Styler @Paul Nicks

The ONLY prudent way is to reverse the transaction at the level of Godaddy, if only to portect the ownerships rights of the OP with respect to Dustie, especially with a view to a future possible sale of a name to a third party. Because, as it stands right now and however absurd it may sound, but the domain may be considered to revert back into the custody of the OP illegitimately should it be deemed that the initial sale through Godaddy during whcih it was acquired for 450 usd was null and void.

After reading the thread & all of the comments I can honestly say - This community is amazing!

@MapleDots did a great thing.

I do think @maxtra needs to refund @MapleDots and just keep $500 so he won't loss any money.

Unfortunately godaddy did not allow the push into my account

I tried several times so it looks like godaddy is on top of this one and has locked it for the time being.

It is unfortunate, I cannot help the op with this after all :xf.frown:

I wonder if the op listed it for $4950, and missed a zero, otherwise somehow their listing reverted back to an old price of $495. which is very unique.

If it was listed at $495 it would not have lasted long, so I guess they could retrace his last login. Could be some sort of loop error, nightmare for any of us, let alone a guy whose username is Dustie.

It’s interesting that a few people are even putting mapledots down for his magnanimous gesture. (n) Also interesting was one person coming along and trying to re-impose conditions on maple’s gesture after he withdrew the conditions.

I’ve come to know mapledots a little though and I think his gesture is genuine. I don’t believe he has ulterior motives.

I mean on some level sure - we donate big money to a foundation so that our legacy name appears on the building - and so will mapledots’ name now appear as a great (beyond good) Samaritan in the NamePros ranks, but still those who donate and do good deeds should be commended, gaining recognition is not an ulterior motive. The gesture itself is what matters.

OMG! What a thing to wake up to. I am literally crying over here. I've been so emotionally charged ever since this happened a week ago. The fact that so many of you have been giving me such support has been so unbelievable and heartwarming.

If I'm reading correctly, Matrix, the one who bought it for 450.00, as since sold it to Mapledots, who is now offering it back to me for the 450.00 that it sold for, even though he bought it for 5,000.00? If this is the case, that is so unbelievable! How can you do this Mapledots? Are you wealthy??? If this is indeed true, how do we make this happen? OMG...I can't believe this. My husband is telling me that I need to step back right now and take a chill pill, that I'm so emotionally charged I must be reading all this wrong. This is all happening so fast....when it looked like all hope was lost...

Bob Hawks..there is no one that even remotely has access to my computer other then my husband, who is quite computer illiterate. All he knows how to do is shop Amazon and put things into the cart. Even then I have to complete the purchase process for him.

I would love to get to the bottom of what actually happened, but I'm not willing to take a chance on not getting my name back to do it. So Mapledot, If you're for real I will definitely take you up on your offer, and will forever be in your debt.

Matrix, I am sorry I accused you of theft without proof, but I didn't know what else to think? This whole thing has been confusing from the beginning....I'm shaking so much over here it's hard to type.

Mapledot...where do we go from here?

GoDaddy is obviously on top of this Dustie, they did not allow the push. You need to private message @Joe Styler and @Paul Nicks on here.

I am so sorry, I was not able to procure the domain.

I am sorry this happened to you, must have been a pricing error by GoDaddy or some type of technical error or things got changed for some reason. It will get resolved.

Since I can not push I have offered to refund @MapleDots the full amount if he wants it back.

It’s ok. Did you get your $5k back from @maxtra ?

I don’t believe for a second that it was “always” listed for $450. Would’ve been purchased long ago in that case. It also seems very unlikely that this was an account hack.

The more likely scenario is that the OP simply listed it wrong and didn’t realize. In this case godaddy should reverse the purchase and give the domain back. It wouldn’t be the first time this type of mistake happened.

If no one lying. I think something really wrong when OP was told by the CS that "dustie.com had always been listed at 450.00". It sounds like the BIN price history somehow got wipe out completely. it's more likely the price change is not happened on Godaddy directly.

Since OP claimed he never has an afternic account. I will suspect that it happened on Afternic. Someone found a loophole, add OP domain into their afternic account and set the price to $450. Would it be possible for them to override OP listing price at Godaddy to $450?

I decided to test out this scenario with my own domain. The testing domain was listed on Godaddy without a BIN price for weeks. I set the BIN price to $8K USD at Godaddy and after a few minutes I set the BIN price for the same domain to $3.8K USD at Afternic.

The Godaddy BIN price finally changed to $3.8K USD instead of $8K USD. :dead:

I think at the end of the day, the original buyer should work with godaddy to simply reverse the purchase. If they won’t do it, sell back at cost and everyone comes out smelling like roses!

Off Subject, but a bit of a breath is needed here I think...

wwwweb, Im a gal named Dustie, not a guy. That is, indeed, my name. It came about because my mom had a brother named Bernard and a Sister named Bernadette and her name was named Irma. She always thought she should have been named Bernadine! So she always thought that, when she had kids, their names would all be somewhat alike.

My older brother was named Russell (a family name) and they called him Rusty. So when she became pregnant with me they came up with Dustin (Dusty) if I were a boy and Dustine (Dustie) if I were a girl. 4 years later my little brother, Justice, came along and they called him... you probably guessed it, Justy. So we are Rusty, Dustie and Justy! Yup...true story.

My brothers both go by their full names now, but I've never used Dustine. I've always been Dustie. For 20 years I've been [email protected]. Do you realize how many places that email is at? I've spent the last week doing nothing but changing my email address. First thing I did coming in here was to change my email so I could get notifications.

I agree with Keith. I think domain should be returned to Dustie whether from MapleDots or from Maxtra. But, what I think doesn’t matter. It’s up to whoever ends up with the domain (mapledots or maxtra) to take action if he chooses.

That was always my intention, if the domain ever lands in my account I will make sure it happens.

That is why I have not asked for a refund.

I think the bottom line here is that @MapleDots has too much money to spare. :)

But seriously... MapleDots was noble to suggest this solution but it wasn't necessary since Maxtra wanted to resolve this matter with Dustie directly anyway so this further attempt to change ownership again just complicated things. There's no need for anyone to take a hit. It's clearly a case where a domain was sold without the owner's knowledge/awareness.

Godaddy need to look into what happened (and apparently already are since they didn't allow the transfer to MapleDots to happen) but regardless, the simple solution would just have been to immediately sell back the domain for $450 to Dustie and move on to better things. I'm sure this matter will be resolved for Dustie who will get her domain back from Maxtra who just happened to buy the wrong domain. I actually happened to see this domain when it was for sale and fortunately dodged that bullet since Dusty is the much more common way to spell this name. Whether the price was a mistake by the owner or something else- that's for Godaddy to figure out but it doesn't really matter for the final outcome.

@Joe Styler

While, hopefully, this is resolved, it got me really worried. Afternic doesn't have 2 step auth and basically invites a big scandal when someone hacks into accounts and puts low bins on valuable names and then immediately purchases via fast transfer and moves to another registrar.

And Afternic won't even notify when prices are changed.

Why not to implement asap such an important security feature?

Exactly and like @Keith said GoDaddy has reversed transactions like this when the seller actually made the mistake. No hack, no glitch, the seller made the mistake, you probably not going to get more than one free pass, but you will probably get one. Especially when the price is so low, I don't think if you sold for $20,000 and then said oh GoDaddy I meant $100,000. That sale might not get reversed but that's just my guess.
