We have analyzed the domains of Fortune 500 companies, to gain insight into their domain preferences. As data were gathered, some interesting facts also got revealed. For example, 14 out of the first 100 registered domains are being used as the official websites of certain Fortune 500 companies today.

494 out of the Fortune 500 companies, which roughly represent 99%, use domains with .com extensions. We see on an interesting side-note that all three companies that use .net extensions operate in the health industry. The extensions that appear only once on the list are .org, .xyz and .technology. An investment consultancy organization TIAA has preferred to use tiaa.org. 22nd on the list and Google’s parent company Alphabet’s name goes well with its domain, abc.xyz. 374th on the list, DXC Technology similarly complements its name by using dxc.technology domain.

Companies in the Fortune 500 usually operate on an international level. The fact that none of them prefers to use ccTLD (country code extensions, like .us) confirms this. Extensions of all the domains on the list go under gTLD classification.

The average length of the domains the companies use is 8.75 characters.

Longest domains on the list are livenationentertainment.com and lithiainvestorrelations.com which are comprised of 23 characters.

On the other hand, 2-character domains that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, appear 13 times on the list. And we should say that almost all of the companies that own two-character abbreviation domains are the first registrants of these domains. One, among domains with two characters, is made up of only two numbers. 53.com that is used by Fifth Third Bank is the only domain on the list that is comprised of just numbers.

Last three posts from you are great insights about domains...and market trends...

Thanks for your time and effort...

Amazon is a Fortune 500 company...but its huge platform and don't forget it operates on ccTLDs for individual country it has market...

Like
Amazon.in/.co.in (India)
Amazon.co.uk (UK)
Amazon.ca (Canada)

And these markets give huge part of its income...

Just one came to my mind...

Yes, you're right. Some companies use ccTLDs for their local operations but for the main website they don't. (y)

And of course companies also use new gTLDs and (sometimes) brand TLDs as well (here are few examples from technology giants). I don't dispute that .com is the main choice for the biggest companies, and will be for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for an incredible series of articles and analysis of late @Macit! Great contributions to NPs!.

You're only scratching the surface too. A lot of these companies own 1000's of domains! I recently found ameritrade had a.de (amazon owns a lot of the "a" domains) Why? It could be a domain hack, tr.a.de!

Some very valuable data presented by Dofo which could help close in deals on high ticket/value domain names during price negotiations.

As they say, DATA is going to it in near future!

Tweeted article as well :)

Nice article.

I will like to add and concur that yes Google.com is the primary website but Google.co.in , Google.co.uk, Google.de etc are all used everyday with large amounts of traffic

Generic/Category killer keyword domains that these Fortune 500 companies own is another area that has not been fully advertised. Especially not just .com , but cctdls of such category killers

Yes, you're right but the scope of the article wasn't that. :xf.wink:

Yes, you're right. "Big" ones also use ccTLDs.

The generic/category killer keyword domain names Fortune 500 companies own is another article's topic. :xf.wink:

Am I correct that this was an analysis of the US based Fortune 500 list or was it the Fortune 500 Global list that is the largest companies overall and not restricted to US headquartered companies? The article says Fortune 500. This makes a difference as .com is obviously way more dominant in US.

I presume that KPMG (revenue $29 billion last year) was not on the list, either because they are not US headquartered or because accounting firms are not included in the list (they are about the 110th largest company in the world) . If they are included, your analysis should show one is on a .brand TLD.

I think it is not the global list because there are no Asian companies such as Alibaba, Tencent and Samsung.

You're right Bob; this is Fortune 500 of US: http://fortune.com/fortune500/list

This should be stated clearly in the article. Sorry about that, it's our mistake. We will prepare another article for Fortune 500 Global :xf.wink:

I think the article was clear - it did say Fortune 500. I just wanted to clarify because people often confuse the two. The recent Dofo articles have been really interesting! Thank you!
