BREAKING -- BREAKING--BREAKING -- BREAKING-- BREAKING--BREAKING -- BREAKING

It has just been revealed the the .com domain extension will be retired. Current registrants will be allowed to continue to use their domain names until the current expiration date, or for 12 months from today, whichever comes first, but no new registrations, transfers or renewals will be possible.

It appears this drastic move came about because a top executive happened to look in a dictionary and discovered that com is a prefix as a part of speech. Therefore it was semantically incorrect to use it after a name. It is not clear why no one realized this for decades. An unnamed source close to the situation said "...we were all living in the .com bubble."

Once ICANN were informed that the .com TLD was not congruent with accepted language use, emergency meetings at an undisclosed location took place. These secret meetings at an undisclosed resort in Florida apparently included ICANN, Verisign, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and industry leaders. There are conflicting reports whether domain investors were included in the meetings.

Some long term investors have had their net worth eliminated overnight. One well known early .com domain investor was taking it in a surprisingly positive way. "Don't worry folks, I can start all over." At the time he made that remark, however, he mistakenly thought there was a .chicken TLD and he was angry when told there was not. However, he was reported to have registered more than 20,000 .horse domains in just hours as a substitute.

At the same time as ICANN announced the retirement of .com they also announced that going forward they would approve prefix domains, and the first prefix domains would be called com. That is domains like com.NamePros would be available starting April 1, 2020. All domains with fewer than 63 characters would be considered registry premium, and offered at prices of $200,000 and up. Names up to 63 characters in length are allowed. That is the only non-premium domain names will be exactly 63 characters long. Domain investors were working hard to find great 63 character names.

As off this time many of the other legacy extensions, including .net and .info, were not impacted.

Stock values saw wild fluctuations as the impact of this decision became evident. We expect additional details as the story unfolds.

If you go to the ICANN bulk transfer site they announced yesterday that Moniker will be getting legacy except .pro and Key-Systems all others. There is a separate NPs thread here for discussing Alpnames issues. I hope it works out for you.

I think you are misunderstanding the nature of this thread? It is meant for fun. Check the date today!

Bob
I figured that out ,but this is serious and domains are dropping and someone told me something they should not have and there are other registras to follow

That is such amazing news. I am off to my bank right now for a loan! Thanks so much for sharing. Sometimes news comes slow in western Canada so I will print your post as proof for them just in case they don't believe me. Thanks so much!

Ooops sorry people. I did not know about the March 32 (everything is slower in retired life). Permanent ban, oh well, it's been nice knowing you all, NPs friends. Maybe I can do a last post banning myself? :xf.grin:
Bob

Edit: Upon consulting with legal counsel, I think it would be more fair to ban us only on March 32 each year. Just saying!:xf.wink:

found more news...

PITTSBURGH - (AP)
The EU threw up their hands and said it was all just a joke. They gave everybody their phone numbers, emails, and home addresses, along with a bag of candy.

Rick Schwartz gave away all his domain holdings to the Public Broadcasting Corporation (with the exception of the adult names, which he transferred to Anderson Rentals Inc., owner of Potty.com), and announced his intention to live on a converted schoolbus and write beat poetry for a vintage jazz band. “I already have 50% of the facial hair I need,” he exulted. “Now gotta find my sandals.”

Anyone wishing to make up a new TLD extension is now permitted to. New registrations appeared for the domains files.shutup, x.aliensamongus, yuck.rickcannotsing, sales.iknowyouarebutwhatami, and dance.devinnunescow.

Donuts Registry, Tim Hortons Partner in Roll Up The Rim® Domain Giveaway

In a leaked report we have just learned that Tim Hortons, a large Canadian chain of restaurants that specialize in coffee and baked goods (especially donuts) as well as light meals, is set to launch a give away which will include domain names. So many Canadians start their days at 'Tims' that many consider it part of Canadian identity.

For a number of years the company have had an annual promotion called Roll Up The Rim®. For those unfamiliar with it, you roll up the rim on your paper coffee cup and it tells you if you have won a price. In the past the company has given away cars, vacations, electronics, food and other prizes.

The breaking news is that this year among the prizes in Roll Up he Rim® is a domain name! You roll up the rim and some cups will tell you the domain name that you have won.

In a unique twist they will apparently be using artificial intelligence to guess what kind of domain name would suit you. They literally make the decision, print it on the cup, and register it while your coffee is being served. For example, I might get a BobSpreadsFunnyFakeNews.ca domain name while if a celebrity athlete comes in they might get HockeyStarFirstLastLovesHotChocolate.com.

Apparently while many of the domains will be reg fee ones of limited value, there also will be a few super premiums given away in the promotion. We have learned that registry Donuts are the corporate partner in the domain promotion. They have a set of premium and platinum domain names across many different extensions, so a few Tim Hortons customers will win big indeed.

While not surprisingly the company will be giving out many .ca domain names, apparently the company is also venturing into number of other domain extensions. The company would not confirm but we have heard that a number of .me, .fun and .party domains will be given, and the company is also fond of .gdn which they interpret as "Great Donuts and Names".

In Moncton, NB, which claims to have more Tim Hortons franchises than anywhere else in the world, there apparently is dancing in the streets as the news leaked out. However one Monctonian who I asked about this replied "What again is a domain again?"

Tim Hortons have more than 4800 restaurants in 14 countries. It was founded in 1964 and is named after a former Toronto Maple Leafs star who played a key role in multiple Stanley Cup wins in the 1960s. He was tragically killed in a car accident after one of his games. This paragraph, at least, is true.

I will share additional details as they become available. Remember the date and tags on this thread when considering the content of this post.

Just heard not only is Verisign retiring .com, but they also decided to release a new extension called .sign, and are going to rebrand as Veri.sign, as well as offer current .com owners a free migration to the new extension. Migration is expected to take approx 20 years or so.

Finally, Verisign saw the sign.

National Spelling Bee Results in Domain Registrar Renaming

A ten year old lost out in the semifinals of the national spelling bee after she was asked to spell the word 'epic' and spelled it 'epik". In tears afterward she said she spelled it that way because she had seen it spelled that way on a hat. "Who spells things wrong on hats? That's not right!"

In case you think this is a sad story, read on. As it turns out the contest had a second chance route and she managed to get to the finals anyway and ultimately won! And it turns out the grand prize along with a trip to the international spelling bee was the right to rename any company spelled incorrectly.

This smart ten year old knew instantly what company she wanted, so going forward Epik will now be known as Epic. Officials at the company said that for several years they had not realized their spelling was wrong, "We had things other than spelling on our mind and still do" was their short response.

It is likely that next year's winner will transform the name Google to correct spelling Googol (don't complain folks, it's mathematically correct and way better than BackRub that it could have been)!

This just in - the International Marketplaces for Brandable Domains (I'MBAD - it should be IMBD but they spell everything wrong) has launched a lobby to stop the practice off the spelling bee winner being able to rename companies.

Stay tuned for further developments.

I just heard that ICANN reversed its .com retirement decision. Instead, they've decided that due to the success of singular and plural domain extensions that use the same word (eg. .car and .cars, .coupon and .coupons, .cruise and .cruises, .deal/.deals, …….. - some of which haven't been released yet, but are already a success), '.coms' is going to be added as an option to .com.

I am not sure but maybe @Doron Vermaat was playing a little April Fool's with today's brandable names email possibly? The first name (Rick.com) on the list had a link taking you to a music site rather than the usual auction link, and I can't find that name in auction. Obviously I don't have money for a name of that quality, but was just wondering what it was at bid wise.

ICANN to Rebrand? Now ICANT?

While we can't get confirmation, sources have indicated that a significant rebrand of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is in the works. Apparently they have been working behind the scenes for some months.

We are told that the thinking is that Names and Numbers is redundant since a name in the domain sense can include letters and/or numbers, so why not simply call themselves the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names (ICAN).

Apparently they came close to doing just that, but then some within the organization felt that their name should include the word technology or technological, to indicate that side of their operation. While this has been hotly debated, we are told by usually unreliable sources, it now appears that the techies have won the day and a rebranding to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Technologies is likely. The acronym ICANT is well, okay no comment.

Apparently this rebranding exercise did not come cheap, and ICANT fees will be $19.88 per domain name. That is in addition to the $0.18 ICANN fee which will remain as well. No one in ICANT would confirm these figures.

Please note that this, and all off our posts in this thread, do NOT carry the 100% true logo used by the Domain Gang. Make your own conclusions please.
