When you get into pure keywords a single letter can throw the value off by 99%, there is no relation in this story, this person wanted to own the category killer, and the seller had spent years turning down big offers. They finally connected , and made it happen. The buyer didn’t come knocking on their door, but owning a category defining name helps get someone to the door when you knock. Whereas most people who knock with subpar names will get the door slammed on them, or nobody will answer. The story may cause others to look, and step up in the aftermarket, but don’t expect a run up on subpar names, I am sure more will be registered at reg fee, but people holding 3 keyword out there idea type names are not going to reap the benefits, simply the hope.

If I got my hands on it, the price would be 7 figures or cash and equity. The buyer actually did get a great deal but the seller paid $8 for it so the return is incredible.

Agreed, just hurts to leave money on the table in any situation, and then hear about it. Could just be fluff or self promotion from the buyer also. Oh to have an extra $500k today

You lose a bit of that advantage when you solicit the sale. I agree, I would just build an affiliate site, where commissions are decent, and just put the silent rumour out there.

I mean I am sure the seller asked for more, but maybe came down to fast, and quickly in the negotiation, as they might have had other plans for the funds. They obviously knew what they were doing to turn down many offers over the years. Many instances people have said no for years, all the sudden they want a new car, or house, and their tune changes. Given he was out there soliciting, nobody else offered him that range or better, so I guess he took it.

I agree with equity, if you can get some early equity in a startup, it can really be the X factor, as the $500k will be spent quick, but that domain should keep churning for a very long time.
