I'm catching the tail end of this, seems to be some kind of controversy...

https://domaingang.com/domain-news/rob-monster-off-twitter-after-christchurch-massacre-controversy/

Must be something odd to evoke this type of a response from one of our members.

Last weekend, my wife and I housed a gay couple at our home for the long weekend. The one is a long-time friend of my wife -- they worked together right out of college and stayed friends through the years. He one is Mexican. His new husband is Spanish. I hugged them both, welcomed them into our home, showed them the city and organized a dinner with our 5 kids for the occasion of our youngest daughter's birthday. I even dressed like a hipster that weekend though it is not my go-to style, frankly. You get the idea

yes I get the idea

After all, Jesus Christ hung out with all types.

what could he do?
he was a jew

he thinks I have something against him because some liberal media told him that I am this, that and the other.
You are incorrect in your theory. I believe you, Rob Monster, have taken a position based on extremist media. I believe your neighbor is far more wise than you.

You dismiss your neighbors intellect instead of understanding his history, and the reasons behind his distaste for your choices. Again, naive and short-sighted.

In the USA, free speech is our first, natural right granted by our creator. The Government doesn't grant rights. Our Bill of Rights and Constitution are restraints on our Government, outlining what it CAN'T do.

After living under a monarchy, our founders considered free speech the most important natural right and listed it first. In the USA, you can mock our political leaders, burn our flag, refuse to pledge allegiance and use bad words.

Rob and I are of the same era when schools taught freedom required tolerance of bad ideas. Our highest courts have confirmed, the #1st Amendment doesn't just protect popular speech.

I'm not agreeing with everything or disagreeing with everything Rob has said, Please consider our culture, we were raised believing free speech, freedom of expression is our most import natural right.

Epik is upholding that tradition.

Fast forward to today. Technology has brought with it issues that our forefathers could not have imagined. I support free speech as long as it doesn't impede another persons pursuit of happiness. If something spoken by one person damages another person, it should not and does not fall under the protection of free speech.

I respect that. Slander, incitement to violence are not protected. Tolerance and offense are both part of living with other people, regardless of technology.

Nothing wrong with your opinion or obeying your conscience and not using Epik's services.

I don't have any problem with Rob Monster or Epik. However, based on my words you might think so. Funny how that works.

I do think Rob is hugely flawed. I do think Rob is naive. But I mean no disrespect. Just speaking my mind.

All this talk about free speech and who it hurts/offends/angers. Either speech is free or it is not.

Perhaps the united nations or some similar group will step up and define what free speech means on a global basis...they can have a list of what/where/when we can say something.

Then all this time discussing free speech can be used for productive things once it has defined, regulated and policed.

It would even expedite things if/when technology gets to the point where it can determined before we speak if we are going to say something wrong and prevent our mouths from forming and saying the words...what a burden from our minds to have that done for us.

Oh, yes...what about false speech? What about offensive speech (such as telling someone they exist with no real purpose)? Those should be regulated as well.

The challenge is the subjective nature of the issue.

Please give me a break with free speech. It's pretty weak to hide behind free speech or God to push conspiracy theories or a far-right agenda.
At least take responsibility for your opinions but don't pretend you are fighting for free speech. It's two different things.
I'm saying this in general, not aiming one person in particular.

Besides, free speech does not make fringe ideas more acceptable. Free speech is simply meant to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority, and leave room for critical thinking that goes the mainstream, because society cannot progress without opposing views. It does not mean all opinions are equally valid. Is racism acceptable ?

I suppose @Rob Monster has determined he is "Taking A Beating" instead of having an educated exchange. Hence the sudden silence perhaps.

Actually, not quite that -- still have 232 unread emails since last night and a bunch of conference calls. I have a day job, but will catch up in due course now that Europe is finishing their day.

For anyone in Rust, Germany for CloudFest, look out for Nick Lim, CTO. He is impressing a lot of folks there with demos of BitMitigate. It is an amazing product and possibly the smart acquisition I ever did.

well adviced @Rob Monster to use this thread as promotion area

Is racism acceptable ?

Do you mean 'is discussion about racism acceptable?' or do you mean as you typed 'is racism acceptable ?' ?

There is a major difference between the two possible questions above. Without the first then we would not be able to debate and question the subject so as to evaluate the second. Without the first we enter into the Orwellian world of '1984' where we are dictated to by those in power who decide what we may or may not think.

I doubt Kate misspoke. Kate asked, "Is racism acceptable?". I see no ambiguity.

There is great ambiguity. If the question was misspoke then that is understandable, for we all do it and a simple clarification sorts it out, it is also loosely related to the topic of this thread.

However, if Kate meant the question as typed - well that has nothing to do with this thread IMO and is therefore the ambiguity exists.

I hope Kate meant the first and not the second, but to clarify I asked HER.

IMO it has a lot to do with this thread. I disagree with you. Now what?

And I will answer Kate's question. No, racism is not acceptable.

We await Kate's reply - and not yours.

It does not mean all opinions are equally valid. Is racism acceptable?

somebody promoting the ideas that lead to racism
and/or are based on racism

would you want that those opinions are valid
and must be heard?

that's how I understand the question

IMO, mentioning Orwell has nothing to do with this thread. And btw, "we" await nothing.

Who is to say what is right and wrong without discussion? (I should say that along with several other groups of ancestral heritage my own race has suffered greatly through racism within Europe for centuries, so I know a little about the subject as being of Jewish ancestry, just as Armenians and Gypsies as well as Slavs know, and also Muslims who suffered terrible racism following the break up of the old Yugoslavia - and racism is not restricted to just these groups either).

But the best way to defeat racism is to discuss it, point out the stupidity of it, the fact of the use of ridiculous stereotypes to engender a dislike of a race based on false premises. This leads to debate and education within society, but to achieve this we also let those supporting racism hang themselves by their own contorted arguments and ridiculing the obvious error and often contradictions within their arguments.

so you think you can fight them better
when they are allowed to be spread?
