Hi guys..This looks like a typical HR question. It is! But it also helps in realistic goal setting, breaking it down and planning to achieve it in a better manner.

So, where do you see yourself in domaining 5 years from now?

Hopefully still domaining "part-time" .. but with the change being no longer having my "full-time" (non-domain related) job.

Part of me things I should work in the industry to help address the list checklist of things that I'd love to see improved. Being mid-February in Montreal I like the though of working for GoDaddy under the sun of Arizona .. or go work for @Frank Schilling at Uni in the Cayman Islands.

I'm pretty sure little Steamie would love being able to go for nice non-ice-climbing walks 365 days a year (are there squirrels to chase in the Cayman's? lol) .. or be able to slide down GoDaddy's office slide (@Paul Nicks and @Joe Styler .. is GoDaddy and your slide dog friendly? Seems I've actually asked this before .. lol)

There really is a lot in the industry I'd like to see improved .. so maybe actually get involved in ICANN policy or the various committees. The thought of important policies like UDRP revamps and other related issues getting hijacked by corporate interest really scares me. But maybe give me 10 years before being Chair of the ICANN Board of Directors! lol

The thought of continuing to do my daily lists here and at NameCult every day, day in and day out really REALLY makes me want to take a nap. It's a LOT of time, energy and work with little appreciation nor reward. Like the size of my portfolio, I'm not sure whether to pull back a bit .. or go all-in? Both seem like viable options for both my portfolio and development of NameCult! lol

But yeah .. I love Montreal 6-8 months a year (one of the best Summertime cities in the world) .. but domaining in the sun the rest of the year is where I'd like to be in 5 years! Plenty of room under the palm trees if any of you want to join me! :)

Likely renewing names I shouldn't be like I have last 20 years. I would like to think I will develop my best unsold names.

On the corner bumming change for .coms

Instead of a few hundred pretty good names, I'm down to a hundred or so great names. Also still doing it part time, unless somehow I end up trying outbounding and having a lot of success with it.

Living in a van, down by the river...

But seriously, 5 years is too long to think about. I'm hoping to be making enough in 2 years to enjoy sitting around doing nothing.

I dont think domaining will be a thing after 5 years, I expect too many changes on the world wide web that will render domaining obsolete.

New gTLDs will fall and rise again then fall for one last time, .com will stay solid, mobile apps will replace websites, eCommerce bubble will collapse, web giants will merge small players will be out of business, Google will take over the web with AI, FB will shrink, Chinese will take over bitcoins and other e coins.

Wow.. That's a lot of predictions!

Turn a domain into a business
Okay so moving towards development?

I just hope nothing much will change in 5 years...it is ok now, as it is :)

I totally agree, but you’ll never know what the future holds. I have been working exclusively online for the last 15 years, so I will probably continue doing that until I get too old, or my heart stops. If I can no longer sell domains, I will hopefully figure something out. I’ll probably never get any pension or money from (any) government, so I just have to, and I kind of like it too. Not so much time for laziness. :)

In 5 years time, I would be based off of Mars, trading domains with them Martians. Moon rock stones being the preferred mode of payment.

I don't really care or bother what would happen 5 years down the line as we are in online business and it changes every passing day.
Presently my focus is clear for next 1 year and I am working towards achieving the same.

In 5 years it is predicted that quantum computers will be able to decrypt public keys, and if that happens it will make huge ripple on the fabric of the internet. It will mean that anything online will no more be secure, including encrypted emails, eCommerce payments, online banking..etc.

“About 99% of online encryption is vulnerable to quantum computers”
https://www.networksasia.net/articl...years.1553499772?qt-breaking_news_most_read=0

In short the internet will not be secure anymore, the only solution is to use real quantum cryptography which is 100% immune to both classical and quantum cyber security threats:

"Well, a ready solution to the quantum threat is quantum key distribution. And the way that works is the key is not made up like an RSA key, it's made of photons. And because it's made of photons, if anyone tries to intercept the key they will change the encoding on that key, and the key will become useless. And that's relying on a law of physics, so it's a fairly unbreakable approach to thwarting the quantum computer threat."

The big question is what will happen if after 5-6 years we are not ready?

I like it more when you yourself answer the question first :xf.smile:

Coming to your question...

Living in a more peaceful and beautiful place.

Well, I personally would've reached around 6,000 domains in my portfolio.

To make few 6 figure sales.

Actually answering to this thread on Namepros instead of ducking the question itself and trying to post a reply onto this thread.
