Okay, so I've let go and broke my self imposed ban of many years on registration of nTLD's and registered 50+ .best domains... :xf.smile:

I've been registering them with development in mind, rather than quick flips, although that's a possibility. I came across this thread today and thought this was a good time and place to ask, before registering any more:

@Cyril.Best, what's your policy, if any, on Registry Premium Domains... does your TOS allow for your increasing pricing to Premium levels on domains registered at regular/promo pricing? :nailbiting:

I ask because pricing for one of the names suddenly "jumped" from $1.99 to $943 after I registered it (paid and the domain was added to my Dynadot account). It's listed in my list of domains, but Dynadot and other registrars selling .best now show it still available for registration for $943! (n)(n)

i don't think dyna ever shows a domain as still avail to reg after you just regged it.

as for increasing prices.. good question
but if answer is yes.. then I guess you just drop and don't renew.
I mean even if they don't increase price on your name.. its stilll probably expensive to renew... definitely not 2$ :)

actually I'm seeing best renew+transfer price as $70 now anywhere.... so I don't think a single person who bought .best at $2 will be paying $70 to renew it.

Thanks for sharing your... thoughts... on this :xf.wink:

The fact remains: I have a .best sitting pretty as you please in my domain list at Dynadot, respective order "Finished", $1.99 debited from my account. Checking for this domain again at both Dynadot and Namecheap shows it's available for registration at $900+ now. Looks like the .best registry reversed the registration and "corrected" the price! :banghead:

No big deal... at $900+ per year, @Cyril.Best can keep the name and sit on it and keep my $1.99 with my compliments, too. Having this happen to some, or maybe all of my .best domains, especially after I will have developed them - that's another can of worms entirely! Hence my question here...

hmmm.. well I can definitely understand errors or delays like this happen on other registrars.. after you reg on dyna.. but I never saw it happen on dyna.. and I have many names there. but hey.. if you see it then its happening I guess ;)

well I just ran check on best transfer/renew prices for .best... and its like $70.

so to me it makes zero difference if they raise prices after I reg $2 .best domain .. cause I wouldn't be renewing any anyway.. $70 is ridiculous.

Agreed! And their annual Registry Premium Domain pricing is even more ridiculous. I can possibly see myself persuaded to initially pay $xxx+ to register an exceptional name, but no chance in hell for that, knowing they will keep charging high $xxx each year for renewals

Most of the other nTLD registries offer selected domains for a premium, but usually only initially, for first year registration, with standard renewal pricing thereafter.

As opposed to .best, one of the few following in the footsteps of .xyz, which registry lost all credibility after they woke up one morning and went and increased pricing to mid to high $xxx Premium levels for selected domains. I let my 500+ .xyz's drop and saved myself a bundle on renewals :xf.smile:

The 50+ .best names I've gone and registered are barely a blip on my nearly 4,000 strong .com portfolio. But I'd hate to invest any time and money on their development if there is a chance of another .xyz fiasco (which was what prompted me to leave nTLD's the heck alone and concentrate on .com's).

Yes, this is what prompted me to register any .best names at all. At $70 renewal pricing, it was a non-brainer... non-starter

After running an initial promo, most of these nTLD's are hard pressed to really get off the ground. They fail to understand that most domains registered, even .com's, remain undeveloped. They are registered and held by domainers, domain investors, where renewal pricing is key in deciding what domains are viable to sit on, as opposed to dropping them after one year***

But that's their problem, not mine. This little .best experiment of mine notwithstanding, I'm perfectly happy to stick to surefire 2-word or even 3-word .com's that I can renew for $7 on average :xf.smile:

***) one notable exception seems to be .top, offering very competitive $4.99 renewal pricing and, unsurprisingly, doing very well amongst nTLD's, including .best (even though the .best extension is a much better fit with most names than .top... but not a better fit for domain investors and developers due to their uncompetitive renewal pricing structure)

One more time about .Best renewals : We know that the renewal price is too high and we will fix this.

FYI : The new .Best wholesale renewal price will get down at $15 on 5th August 2019 at all .Best registrars so all domains registered during the promotion can be renew at $15 wholesale renewal price after 5th August 2019.

Why 5th August 2019 ? Coz we had a legal notice of 6 months with our registrars. So we have already informed all of them on 5 Feb 2019 of this price changing.

So all domains that are registered now (except premiums) will be renew at $15 wholesaleprice starting 5th August 2019.

Best,

CF

Of course, you can still wait until 5th August to register your .best domains if you prefer.

Also, FYI, here is our .Best registrar promo plan for the next months.

Feb 2019 : OVH was 0.99 Eur / .Best domain registration (Western Europe)
March 2019 : Dynadot actually at $1.99 / .Best domain registration (USA)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
April 2019 : Subreg (Eastern Europe)
May 2019 : West (China)
June 2019 : GMO (Japan)
July 2019 : Domain Cost Club (USA)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then August 2019, Price change at $15 wholesaleprice starting 5th August 2019.

Hope it helps.

Best,

CF

You might want to work with your registrars on a more coherent marketing strategy, Cyril. As I've already mentioned before, I'm well aware renewals will cost me $15 (plus my selected registrar's surcharge). Registering a new .best domain at Dynadot (for example), most people don't know this, as Dynadot warns at checkout that .best renewal cost is a whopping $83.99! As you point out, this is not true for the domains being registered today, but... Dynadot begs to differ with you! :sneaky:

I was curious about this... thanks for the explanation :xf.smile:

Hi Andrew,

I totaly agree and understand your position and even sorry for the confusion it can cause.

We are also not happy with this transition period on our own (we would like to get down the price faster) but legally we have to respect all our registrars agreements.

The problem is that it's a legal thing from our Registry-Registrar agreement. From now, until 5th August registrars cannot display another renewal price that the effective one (even if price will drop in few months on 5th August).

Plus, I gave this exclusive info first for NP traders only coz I think right now the inventory of .Best good available names is still great before we hit China in May for instance but we don't really communicate on this price change outside.

But like I said, for the ones that don't feel secure with this transition period, you can always report your .best registration to August. We want all traders to be confortable with this intermediary situation and once again we apologize for any confusion it can cause.

Let me know if I can help in anything during this transition period.

Best,

CF

I'd appreciate your answering my most important question in my first post above...

https://www.namepros.com/threads/register-your-best-domains-for-just-1-99.1127254/#post-7160598

Can you please let me know on which domain you had a such issue so that I can figure out what happened ?

I am surprised coz we did not move any single domain from the standard category to a premium category since our acquisition. Plus all domains sold at $1.99 are exclusively standard & not premium domains (all our premium domains are in 3 dedicated category and cannot be sold at $1.99 by our registrars)

Let me know the domain name so that I can check what happened with Dynadot.

Thanks

CF

Sure... PM sent.

I answered you in PM but just to confirm that there was no pb on our side or dynadot (no price change)

You made a mistake in registering the name - you did not registered the right name you want.

The name you want is a premium name and is still available for registration this is why you see it at that premium price.

Best,

CF
