I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Recap is right about CIRA's role in this, but they are also responsible for oversight vis-a-vis the registrars and they are failing in that regard.

Agreed, I don't get the feeling that CIRA is doing their job in that regard. They should also require that if a registrar is going to allow auctions, they should demand complete transparency. Whois privacy doesn't really help matters...

If it's true that I didn't backorder that name (not), then I shouldn't have been allowed into the auction.
Agreed.

Two weeks ago they extended the auction at first by a day and then again by an hour. Changing the rules of the game in the middle of the game is categorically unfair to those who are participating.

Not sure I 100% agree there, sometimes shit happens (not necessarily MyID's fault) and it would be unfair to NOT extend the auction.

GoDaddy Auctions controls most of the expired .Com domains inventory now, while DropCatch.com catches most of the dropped .Com domain inventory.
But, parent company of DropCatch.com (HugeDomains.com/TurnCommerce) also actively bids on domains at GoDaddy Auctions.
Actively is an understatement they blanket it with bots, push prices up, and cost everyone a lot, as their little bot doesn't miss much, at one point it was triggered by bids in the last 5 minutes by placing auto $101 bids on certain names. It has come a long way for sure. Owning 5 million names is not enough, they are still buying domains like YourVancouver.com for $6xx on Godaddy etc... Can you imagine an automated bidder that frequented your place of business on a daily basis, and drove your sales prices up for all your customers day in, and day out with fail, you would love them.

I agree a single TBR system would certainly simplify things (and remove the shady characters tied to registries from collecting premium domains essentially for free). But that's never going to happen. CIRA doesn't sell domains except at wholesale, so for everything other than TBR, that system works well.

But the whole concept of dropping domains and auctioning them off has always been questionable to me. I've wondered who first started that, and who said it was OK? I guess enterprising registrars realized they could do that, and the registry couldn't figure out a way to stop them legally, so it became the defacto model.

It must be the model by design because CIRA grants exclusive access to registrars first and prevents access to the public until the following day.

That's exactly what happened, and whereever there is money, there will be scammers looking to work any angle possible to get part of it. I don't know who started it, but I believe it began when Registrars started abusing the "grace period" (where the original registrant have lost the domain, but the Registrar still maintain ownership control) to "resell" these domains to others, either via BIN or auction, and there was little that ICANN could do about them using this loophole for financial gain.

I'm not sure who did it first, it might have been SnapNames or GoDaddy, but it all steamrolled fast after that. Now virtually everyone sells or resells their expired domain stock, and unaffiliated drop-catchers try to pick up the crumbs.

I can remember back in the day, when every domain that expired went back to be registered, and enterprising domainers were building programs for it, trying to micro-time the drops, running bots, or just mouse-mashing to try to get the best ones.

Not sure I 100% agree there, sometimes sh*t happens (not necessarily MyID's fault) and it would be unfair to NOT extend the auction.

Here I am breaking my new rule already.

To date MYID hasn't responded to my support request for the identity of it's ISP. Before you think it's nobody's business - they were conducting maybe a dozen simultaneous auctions totalling several tens of thousands of dollars. Two, maybe three bidders per auction is a significant number of people to affect. Sh*t happens for sure, so it's harmless to provide verification.

With that, I've wasted another Saturday in front of my idiot box. Have a great weekend everyone!

Anyone ever wonder why there's a 60 day lock on new registrations? I get it for transfers - this way a domain can't be shuffled from registrar to registrar if its been stolen - but that isn't really an issue for new registrations. I wonder what the logic is on that...

Excuse the French but.....

It's for when CIRA screws up and lets us register domains they need to take back again, it gives them a sixty day window to screw us a second time.

I'm still annoyed that I get an email from cira congratulating me on my new domain and they take it back. I can understand the ones where I did not get this email but to acknowledge a registration right at the source (cira) and then take it back almost seems criminal.

They're just protecting their asses in case they screw up again.

Oh right - good point, can't believe I forgot those examples already - it was just over a month ago! Well - if CIRA didn't have their heads up their asses on that FURY cutover - it would never be an issue, but I guess this is their safety net.

Damn, it looks like Alerts are not working for me, as there are a ton of new posts with zero notifications. Anyone else?

I was just going to post that the TBR is way, way down to only 6,335 domains, and this is after long streak of 8K+.

For your entertainment, check out whois on reiss.ca. At whois.cira.ca, the response is:

Something went wrong. Please try again later.

From the command line:

Server Name: reiss.ca
IP Address:
Registrar: Rebel.ca Corp.
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.ca.fury.ca
Registrar URL: www.rebel.ca

I wonder what happened there, looks like a corrupted whois record or something as its missing most of the data....

That would have been a nice sale @MapleDots.

Apparently there’s also a song called “Don't Let Your Mouth Write a Check That Your Ass Can't Cash”.
