Domain has expired/dropped but not available for registry?

Hi,

I've been following a domain for a few months now and I'm curious as to what's going on "behind the scenes", for lack of a better way to phrase it.

Some info about the domain;

The domain in question expired on January 11th. It was put up for auction by GoDaddy for $12 and eventually went down to $4-5, if I'm not mistaken, before ending without a winner, at least from what I could tell, on February 16th.

I checked to see if it has been registered (whois) on multiple different sites and each one said there was no such domain. Which lead me to believe that the domain is available for registration.

However, it isn't.

It is now about the 57th day (and counting) since the domain expired but it still hasn't dropped it seems despite the fact that the domain doesn't return in any whois lookup searches. For what it's worth, I also tracked it via ExpiredDomains, and it went from being on the "Pending Delete" list to "No List" and Status: Registered. How can that be? And the site does not resolve if I visit it in the web browser nor does it return anything if I ping it.

What exactly is going?

I hope someone with more experience/knowledge can clarify or give me an insight as to if this is normal or abnormal? Can domains be pulled/set aside like this from public registration?

Thank you for your time.

This is called "closeout". Godaddy sells there their expiring domains.

After the closeout ends with no buy, the drop should happen in about 40 days.

According to the knowledge base/help section on GoDaddy;

"If the domain name is not renewed, redeemed, or purchased through an auction, it is returned to its registry. The registry determines when the domain name is released again for registration."

If I understand that correctly, there is no set date/number of days before they release it? I find that very interesting which would make sense regarding this particular domain.

I posted the question on there today and am hoping for a more precise/clear answer.

It's definitely not a domain that anyone here would purchase. It's a domain in the sports category. I prefer to keep the name private as I would like to register it. Hope you can understand my reason for not revealing the name.

Why didn't you just pay the $5 for it?

I don't have a GoDaddy Auctions account and I am not domain re-seller. The domains I do have are for my projects. If I do sell one or two it's because I am no longer interested in developing the domain.

From what I understand, the GD Auction membership/account is $4.99 per year. Plus the $5 for the domain purchase, plus $9.99 for whois privacy protection, plus $11.99 for registering the domain with GD plus taxes would come up to over $26.

If they release it, and it's not a popular domain by any means, I'd be able to register it for less then $7 elsewhere.

Sometimes they drop around day 70... I can't remember. I waited that long for a domain from godaddy. Picked it up a few hours after it dropped.
I found out the number on the forums, I just can't remember the exact number.

Edit: I waited about 2 weeks for that domain to drop so I could pick it up. The date was spot on. It dropped on the day I expected.

Why would you need privacy, the time you are spending talking about it now is lost opportunity cost, it has value, and the time you are going to have to wait tracking it down, and waiting for it to drop, hoping a drop catcher doesn't get it for speculation purposes, and if they do, it will all be for nothing.

So the value of $8 compared to $17 has very little savings.

Best of luck with your FOOTBALL domain.

To some, whois privacy doesn't matter but to others, such as myself, it does. Different strokes for different folks.

Like I said before, it's not a popular domain by any means, it's not even .com for what it's worth. I am not sure where the $8 and $17 figures come from but my financial decisions have served me well in life thus far. Anyway, I asked if someone knows the answer to the question in the opening post not a lecture on what you think I should do.

I have the answer, but I don’t want to spend the time answering your frugalness.

I like privacy.

Free privacy using a service at anonymize.com (brought to you by Epik, I believe). I use it for multiple registrars.

So you dropped by to say "hey I got the answer but I don't to want to say it"? Cool.

Just an update for those with a similar question as in the opening post;

After 82 days, the domain (.net) was released back for public registration and I managed to handreg it for my project for a very cheap price . As I had posted the answer from a GoDaddy official in a previous message, there is no specific number of days as it depends on the registry though the longest it can technically take from the registrar's side is about 80 days (0-45 days grace period, 30 days redemption period, approximately 5 days delete period). In this case, it was quite long.

Take care.

lol...You feel smart by this analogy, dont you? What about the time spent waiting and waiting? Same time you could have used to start whatever project on it. Like we say in local Nigerian parlance: Time na money (Time is money)

There are people still bothered by someone else's choices in life, despite only reading a post from them on an anonymous forum? Damn. You must have a lot of time on your hands.

I am not sure why someone would take the time of their day to comment on an issue that doesn't affect them at all, have nothing constructive to add and not to mention, after it has been settled and forgotten about. Talk about "feeling smart", eh?

The assumptions you make are not only rather odd but outright hilarious. Somehow, you've managed to come to the conclusion that I've wasted time on my project. What if I were to tell you that I've been working on my project since January 2018, it's been doing well, and that the domain I handregged (the one mentioned in this thread) was purchased because I wanted to use it as a forward domain and keep it out of the hands of my potential competitors? Didn't think about that one, did you? Better yet, try re-reading the last five words of the first sentence of the post you quoted and you'll realize how silly your post is.

PS: That wasn't an analogy. Those were facts.
