I have an idea! I am going to try to build and improve upon last month's contest. Who liked it last month? Who missed it last month? Who thinks @Want2learn could have made a much better final selection? March will hopefully be a little bit better contest for everyone. Time to see who can make the best hand registration during the month of March. You have to create it during the month of March. The domain for March will have to be registered in March, AND if it had been registered before it must have been unregistered for at least 6 months prior to March 2019! Let me be clear, for my March contest the name has to be a new hand reg.
Name.com stepped up and sponsored the contest with a nice prize. @name.com Thank you again. I would love to invite anyone that would like to sponsor this contest to let me know. Lastly, out of gratitude for their sponsorship, I would like to add for the month of March for THIS contest that you register the name at Name.com. They haven't asked me to do this for them. No one from NamePros has asked me to do this. I think it is a best practice. When we want nice prizes for contests we have to be willing to support businesses when they come through focus . . . all the more when they didn't ask for anything in return!

Here are the rules of this HAND REG contest for March 2019:
1. Hand registration during the month of March 2019.
2. You may submit up to 3 domain names. One submission must be dot com. That means two entries are free to use whatever extensions you choose.
3. Each name must have its OWN reply, so if you want to submit 3 names, submit three replies.
4. The contest judging criteria are changing! The community will select the top 10 domains through voting; a panel of 3 will select the winner through collaboration. I am accepting applications for judges. I would like to select 2 other judges to collaborate with me on the final 10 and then ultimately pick the winner. I am thinking Skype is how we will work together virtually on the final ten to WON!!!
5. You must use a Name.com account to register names for this contest.

What do you win?
Number one, props and clout here at Namepros.
I will personally pay up to $10 to add an extra year on the domain, so if you choose an expensive extension and it wins, you are only getting $10 from me!!

I believe community voting/voice/say/input and additional extensions were the big requests to make this contest better. The number of LIKES will be the initial voting. In honor of March Madness, the final sweet 16 domains based on the number of likes will be added to a poll on March 31. I will put the sweet 16 in the poll and the voting will determine the elite 8 finalists. The two judges and I will collaborate on the winner. The names must be registered in March as already stated. The judging may take up to a week to announce because I want the community to have at least 100 hours to trim from16 to 8! Then time to go from 8 to WON!

Nice. I bet we'll have more entries than last month.

Props to Name.com for sponsoring previous prize as well. And congrats to the winner of Feb and next one March as well.

@Want2learn So if the name was registered elsewhere but in march, the fact that it was at another registrar disqualifies it?

I like the the improvement on judging process but I don't like that it should only be registered at Name.com

Thanks for the thought into the changes, @Want2learn. I just wanted to clarify a few things....

You may submit up to 3 domain names. One submission must be dot com. That means two entries are free to use whatever extensions you choose.
So if someone submits just 1 entry does it have to be .com? Or is it that if you submit all 3 then at least one must be .com?

You must use a Name.com account to register names for this contest.
This means all 3 names have to be registered at Name/com, I presume?

Just a couple of other thoughts. I guess it would be hard to police this, but I would like to suggest that once the contest is complete is is inappropriate for people to post to this list if they disagree with the choice of the judges. While in general I agree with free speech, it seems to me that second-guessing decisions and as we saw before just creates negativism. Sure, I suspect many of us would think some other name is more deserving. But that is just our opinion. This is not an exact science. Even long term investors opinions are just that, opinions.

Secondly, now that it is open to other extensions, I wonder if we need to set a restriction on premium domains. I personally would favour disallowing any domain name with a premium fee (or lacking that simply set a limit to the amount that the hand reg could have as a registration fee, like $25 or something).

You had raised before issues of domain names with multiple prior ownerships over many years. I would favour a rule that you must not use any drop-catch or auction process to obtain the name, i.e. it must simply have been a name anyone could just go to a registrar and obtain directly for standard fee, As long as it meets that prior registrations and expiry are irrelevant.

Rather than creating confusion and negativity in the list, I would suggest that anyone who sees a name they think has broken a rule should DM you with that concern, not post it to the list. For example if you see a name that was on a drop catch or is a premium new extension or has a registration date outside the month, for example.

These are just my personal thoughts - not rules of contest! (so someone casually reading this won't be confused and think these are new rules, at least not unless you added one or more of them). Of course feel free to ignore any or all!

Thanks again for all your work on this contest!

Bob

You basically just killed the contest by making it more complicated than it needs to be. Don't overthink it.

Entries - people should be able to register at the registrar of their choosing.

Voting - You're adding in judges and skype etc. Again, you could do a simple, whichever gets the most likes wins. Or top 5/10 likes go into a poll and then community vote.

Keep it simple, more participation.

I am going to compromise a little bit here.

Today is March 4. All new registrations from March 1 through March 20th can be from wherever they come from. Afterwards Name.com going forward until I say otherwise, provided I still sponsor.

PS I’m not ignoring other suggestions just thinking.

Just an idea but maybe another member(s) should host the challenge this go around just to mix things up. Based on the fact that no one is posting any domain names and that the level of excitement is not like the earlier contest, I think an overhaul is needed. This is just my opinion. I mean no disrespect.

You may be correct. Someone else can take the lead if they want. No hard feelings at all.

Honestly think the name.com rule isn't great.

* nothing wrong with Name.com, I just hold all my domains elsewhere

What happened to the other thread started yesterday by @BrandCougar? I think it would be nice if other people got a chance to run one. I disagree about the specific registrar idea as well.
