What is the fondest memory of your domaining career?

For me, I once owned a domain name CommercialGain.com which I thought would make me ultra-rich. Being asked by some domainers who were interested that time in buying it at resller prices(probably $20-$50), I would quote it fondly as $10,000 reseller and would tell them that the name had the potential to be sold for over 6-figures.
Those were the initial years. I forgot to renew it and the name expired. I realized that HugeDomains or someone picked it up.

For the next 2-months, I lived my life believing that I just lost $100,000!!

It was a funny time!! That is one of my fondest domaining memory!

How about you?

Haven't been domaining very long,so my fondest memory thus far is when I received a message from undeveloped that a name I owned has been paid for and sold.:xf.smile:

When I sold a name for almost $8k 3 days after I got for $90.

That was pretty cool.

My unfondest memory - I woke up to a series of names from Undeveloped. Sold a name for $5K BIN but the buyer immediately backed out, thinking he was buying the name for $5.

That was not cool.

On the plus side, it all happened overnight while I was sleeping... so its not like I saw the name sell and get all excited for hours, then have the buyer back out for a major disappointment. I just woke up to a series of emails and was sad for only a few minutes

When someone contacted me via a number that's with Google voice and they left some crazy psycho message cursing me out. Didn't think nothing of it and then I realized it had to be someone who was pissed I regged a domain they wanted. lol crazy world we live in! Probably some weirdo on NP right now reading this. I'll expect your call later buddy!

I don't know if "fondest" really applies to the OP's experience.

I'll post my weirdest:

I was outbounding some shipping related domains and contacted the same company 3 times because they operate under 3 names. The person in charge of everything sent me a rather nasty email telling me that I contacted them many times with the same name, clicked on their google ads (not sure how they knew) and was wasting their time and ad money.

The next day someone else from the same company contacted me and apologized for the first nasty response. I told them it was fine, and took the blame even though how could I know they were three companies.

Two days later "Mr Nasty" sent me an email apologizing for jumping on me and he told me they were considering my domains with their marketing department and big boss.

About a week later the first apologist told me they were going to buy 2 of the domains at high $xxx bin and would be contacting me in a day or two to finalize everything.

After they they went silent. Neither of them responded to multiple emails and a phone call to one went to voice mail and was never returned.

Domaining is a weird business....

Fondest memory - Being able to think of, or come up with, an idea for a domain, check it, and for the most part finding it available and regging it. ..ahhhh the early days of domain regging.

An interesting question. The first sale, a few hand regs that I was truly excited about, actually having my name chosen as a finalist in the .com hand-reg competition, having the 3rd resale in the world in an extension, selling a .fun domain finally as I really like the extension, the people who have reached out to me with kind DMs, someone who I had helped navigating the Namecheap marketplace who sent me an excited email when he had his first $25 sale, etc. all come to mind but my favourite is....

In my relatively early days on NPs someone (I am not disclosing the name or person because it was a private interaction) posted a few recent registrations, and quickly got some, in my view, unfairly negative 'worthless hand reg' type responses. It seemed to me that in this case (and in many others) such a strong appraisal without any evidence seemed both unhelpful and stated with more certainty than warranted (Domain appraisal is not an exact science, I think we all make mistakes.). I responded, in a bit more length, saying which names (the post had a few) I thought were better in the list, and why. I tried to be kind, but more than that I honestly saw potential in one of the names in particular.

The person reached out to me and actually offered to sell that one name to me at a very reasonable price. I declined, since it really did not fit the niches I was handling, but reiterated I still saw good potential in the name. Only days or maybe weeks later I noticed early one morning when checking NameBio that the exact name had sold in another extension for a high price. I immediately sent a DM message to the person I had discussed it with. He had not actually got around to listing his name on the main marketplaces but did shortly thereafter. And I think it was a couple of months later I saw that his name had sold for a very good price ($$$$), not as much as the other, but far more than he had offered the name to me for. I was so happy when he sent me a note about his success.

Do I feel regret I did not buy it and sell it myself? Not an iota!

If I seem to sometimes go out of my way to provide longer, balanced and kinder responses to those who have received negative responses, it is based on this experience from my early days.

Thanks for the interesting idea for a thread @Arpit131 - I like the way you think outside the traditional boxes in some of your threads.

Bob

I have a pretty weird story. Not as a domainer but from a time I was more involved in web development.

In 2003/2004 I registered a few domains and built an online community after the first and only "World Idol" aired. It blew up. At that time, MMS messaging were a big thing. So I set up a series of pictures that people could receive on their phones, for a small fee. Text "Photo 123" to 2065 e.g.

Ofcourse, I didn't have the rights nor the knowledge to orientate in that kind of territory. And little did I know that I was being monitored.

After a while I received an email from lawyers representing the management and the artist, threatening me with lawsuit. I believe I had to remove everything that involved some sort of transaction or money involvement.

This incident ended up in newspapers and national radio.

The fun thing about this story. I ended up selling both sites, and were instead put in charge of running the official website for that particular artist.

Probably when I was about 16 years old and the nice people at Linde sold the name LLL.co.uk to my young self for £500.

Oh how I loved that domain, I should have kept it.

That is more than cool my friend! When did this happen?

Happens a lot! You have to keep that in your assumption list that atleast 10-20% won't go forward even after closing a deal over mail.

When was this? Early 2000s or late 90s? You must be having some gem in your portfolio in that case!!

Interesting story! Thanks for the appreciation! How has domaining been for you?

How much did you sell it for?

How has domaining been for you?
I have found domaining to be an interesting place to learn many things and interact with interesting people. I view myself as more an analyst, educator, and writer than a seller, but I have met the goals I have set for myself: not lose money, make a reasonable ratio on each sold, put money made back into other domains, and each year have a higher sales volume. As a risk averse senior I never personally plan to handle high cost names, even though I recognize thar the best returns may lie there. Thanks for asking.

Good question, my first thoughts on this went to previous sales.

But actually my best feelings as actually been buying, that feeling when you believe you have bought something special and ‘potentially’ own a valuable asset as probably been my best feeling so far domain investing.

I remember buying a domain, seeing the domain i owned different places where i walked/in the news/all over the web, having brokers contact me offering their service and 6 weeks after owning it receiving a mid-5 figure offer, i turned it down, but was good knowing i could have basically made a 2 to 3 year salary in 1 move.

Another domain i bought (paid 5 figures for) has receive multiple 5 figure offers since I’ve owned it, paying 5 figures for a domain is always a risk and creates doubt whether you’ve done the right thing or not, so when these offers are coming in it is sort of a relief and a good feeling where you know might own something that may have value.

I remember having that same feeling on my first handreg though, reality tells me now i was living in dream land, but was an awesome feeling none the less.

Thank you for your feedback, let me answer your questions one by one.

Who made the offer?
I
don't know who made the offer because SEDO does not display it - all I know is the country of the bidder and the year since s/he is registered on SEDO - that's all what SEDO displays.
However, it's anyway not important for me to know who made it because all what counts at the end is the height of the submitted bid.
But whoever it was, it can only be a very smart person that really understands this domain names's potencial and valueee
Regarding tha fact that it was a relatively early offer, I assume that it was most probably a domainer that was trying to get it as an investment for futureee

How much?
I don't want to say how much but I can say that it was a serious bid but definitely to low and therefore not acceptable - so I rejected it.

Why haven't you sold it yet?
Because I rejected all offers until nowww
Or, in other words, the right offer did not yet arrived - I assume because those few who could indeed buy / pay it, are not yet aware of it's existenceee

Who is gonna type this huge domain name?
I don't care who is gonna type it - but I assume at least those who will try to buy ittt
Latest when I will sell it, there will be many who will type it innn
But it's anyway not a problem to type it it - you just have to repeat the word "top" for 21 times and add the TLD .top - that's it.
The real "problem" is more its galactical price - at least for the majorityyy
But not for those who have the moneyyy

Well, I hope that helps - however, if you have further questions regarding this domain name, feel free to ask, I will try to answer them in the best way I cannn
