I have an idea! Who wants to have a contest and see who can make the best hand registration during the month of February? You have to create it during the month of February. As long as it says created 2/2019 it could have been a name born before that died and lost its age. Let me be clear, for my February contest the name has to be a new hand reg.
Any sponsors in the house? @namesilo @Epik.com @toughdomains @NameJetGM @name.com

Here are the rules of this DOT COM HAND REG FEBRUARY 2019 contest:
1. Hand registration during the month of February 2019
2. You may submit up to 3 domain names.
3. Each name must have its OWN reply, so if you want to submit 3 names, submit three replies
4. I am excluding myself from entering the contest since I am the judge!
5. I will narrow down to 3 names, and pick the winner.

What do you win?
Number one, props and clout here at Namepros.
I will personally pay up to $10 to add an extra year on the domain. That means dot com only for this contest.

Are you gonna say why you chose it?

Congrats on winning by the way.

Agrico Solutions look like huge business to me!! Where did you register the name? Name dot com is adding an account credit of $100 when you open your Name dot com account. I’ll oay the transfer fee to Name and that’ll add the year. And then you will have $100 from Name dot com.

I want to say thanks to @Jared Ewy and Name dot com for adding the $100 bonus. And a big thanks to @Bob Hawkes for making others aware of the competition.

So who is ready for March?

My congratulations to @ecomslice for the winner, AgricoSolutions (.com). A very deserving winner.! When it becomes a huge company in a few years, we can all say we had a domain name in a contest it won :xf.smile:.

Huge thanks for @Want2learn - great idea and well handled month of competition.

Thanks also to @Jared Ewy and Name dot com for the generous prize.

We all won because I think this contest helped each of us
  • Have an additional push to find a good hand-reg and enter it in a competition.
  • See the creative possibilities demonstrated by so many of the entries. I am sure we all got ideas that will make us better domainers as a result of following this thread.
  • Domaining is often solitary, and the rules of NPs restrict (for good reason) self-promotion in most threads. This gave us all a legitimate way to share a recent registration that we were excited about.
  • I am not sure how many of us did this, but I think it is a really good exercise to look through the domain names and ask yourself how would you have selected the top 10 and top 1. What would your criteria have been? Self-reflection almost always makes us better domain investors.
Thanks for the fun and inspiration.

Bob

Probably need a better selection process in the future...

Brandable + “Solutions” on the end was the best of all those hand regs?

I only looked through a couple but I know LightClient.com is 100% better than the chosen winner... Just saying.

It's your thread W2L - and it's a good thread - and you can choose any name you want but the winner didn't do anything for me either. Neither did one of the runners-up. bikesabout is good if "about" is used regarding the definition "all around".

It's kinda like a good movie with a bad ending. Despite that, congrats to the winner.

I can also prove it, because I’ll offer the owner of LightClient .com $100 right now.

No offense to the winner but I personally wouldn’t offer $10 for AgricoSolutions.com

@NameClerk.com let me know if you’d like the $100 for LightClient.

Congrats to the winner! Interesting domain for sure!

I think it will be better -regardless of the winning name- to make a poll next time.. NP members will be more satisfied.

congrats to the winner

I bet you would. Light clients are crucial elements in blockchain ecosystems.

Congrats to the winner!

These type of contests beg for a panel of judges. One person judging this many domains is not a recipe for continued success. A panel or community of judges would make all participants feel more comfortable with the process. More could be gained by the panel explaining their final decision as well....I say this as a suggestion with no disrespect to this contest.

LightClient, Brightablty and many other domains are much stronger than AgricoSol, IMHO.

1. Agrico the a name of a number of companies... Google can prove it.. Trademark conflict?
2. These Agrico domains are available for regging as of now:

AgricoConsulting
...Business
...Service
...Project
...Management
...Training
....Solution
...Capital
....Cloud
...Data
...Expert .. Experts
and many others...

Anyway, the Contest owner has a full right to have own opinion regarding the topic even if the Jhftujhhgfiiogfrggkn.com domain is the best according to his taste.

And yet again the always wise @Silentptnr concisely and clearly said exactly what I was feeling and trying to decide how to say.

Can't we all celebrate that we had a fun contest, that @Want2learn had a great idea, that there were many great entries, without fighting about who should have won. I think a totally reasonable choice for winner was made according to the clear rules and plans for the contest.

Congratulations @ecomslice! You have a great domain name.

Please everyone, let's not turn something wonderful into something unpleasant.

@ecomslice congratulations on the win , I know how hard you have been working to personally better your name choices and your knowledge of the industry .....keep up the good work .....anyone trashing ecom for having a go should be ashamed......maybe it’s not the best entry in many people’s eyes but it was the best entry in the judges eyes and that’s what counts.....well done @ecom

Yeah. Namepros could start something like this. Initial entries could have likes. Then take the top (whatever, 5,10) domains that get likes, put them in a poll for everybody to vote on. One of the prizes could come from Namepros, Upgraded account, free advertising (I won one of those before) etc. plus prizes from whoever else wants to contribute.

If there were to be a contest whereby a winner were selected by popular vote, as some have requested, that contest wouldn't be able to commence until all entries had been submitted. If anyone wants to create such a thread, this would be the time to do so. Though, it seems like Light Client has already been named the de facto winner.

I see people say some things like this. I do happen to agree that some sort of panel would be best for judging. What I have a difficult time with is, your thoughts that Namepros will somehow do this type of thing. It’s great if they do though. Everyone has had an opportunity to start a contest, but no one else has that I’m aware of.

Anyways it’s all good. Maybe March will be better!!

Short version, easiest way - whatever domain gets the most Likes. That's community voting via the Likes.

Longer, rambling version
It would be nice if they did, I don't think they will tho based on some past suggestions. In the past I suggested Namepros have a Best Of or Favorite of the Year type threads once a year. We used to do this every year in the affiliate marketing forums back in the day, was very popular. Favorite Affiliate Tool, Favorite Affiliate Manager, Favorite Affiliate Network etc. Nominations, then a vote. I said, we can do that here. Favorite Registrar, Favorite Domain Blog, Favorite Domain Tool, Favorite NP Thread/Post etc. They didn't want to start one up, suggested that I do. So I did but just for 1 topic, Favorite Domain Registrar - https://www.namepros.com/threads/favorite-domain-registrar-poll.933122/#post-5417810

Had 866 votes. I think these things are kind of fun, usually very active. Winners sometimes promote they win on their site, good for them on a promotional level. Hey, I won Favorite Domain Blog at....Namepros. Namepros gets return exposure.

So with this, if somebody wants it, I think somebody has to start it on their own. I think somebody from NP should do it, so it's kind of an official type thing.

But, I guess you can take the same suggestion. This was a first time thing here, so we can learn from it. Basically just go thru the thread if you do it again, pick the top 5/10 domains that get the most likes, put them in a poll that everybody can vote on. Or even simpler if you don't want to do a poll, the one that gets the most likes. The likes would be the votes. Then it's not just on 1 person to decide.

Found old thread from 2013 where I went into more details - https://www.namepros.com/threads/namepros-best-of-2012.783221/

@Want2learn -

1st let me say THANK YOU for providing the February Contest thread last month.

I found it interesting glancing at the variety of names submitted.

Suggestion - here is a "hybrid" approach that might meet many of the above objectives outlined - for your final pick for March, simply Pick 5 that had the most "likes" at the end of the month and add to that another Pick 5 that you personally pick (as the OP) - from this combined Top 10 list - then simply do a 24 hour Poll on the 1st of the following month (a 1 day poll).

The reason I make this suggestion is it provides...

1) Pick 5 - those 5 names with the most "likes" make it to the Top 10 (user involvement).
2) Pick 5 - those 5 names that you personally "like" (as the OP) makes it to the Top 10 (OP involvement).
3) Top 10 Poll - this involves everyone, but only for a specific 24 hour window so it doesn't drag on too long (ALL involvement).

You have done a terrific job providing this thread, and as such, I feel it's only fair that you should be provided a Pick 5 (OP) selection of your own to share with the audience. With that, having the Pick 5 (Likes) will engage the user audience to let others know via the "Like" Alert that they have been recognized as having a great hand-reg (sort of a "congrats" by each community vote).

Since name picking is subjective, it would be terrific to engage the entire audience in the Final selection - and a 1 day Top 10 Poll (the 1st of the month following the submissions process) is a terrific model to consolidate all that data and engage all those that contributed (along with those that maybe didn't)..

I hope the suggestion is helpful.

-Jim

ps: In the process, you remain the MC of the event and the entire audience is engaged and their voice (vote) is recognized.

@JB Lions / @Bob Hawkes / @Jevsim / @Josh R / @Silentptnr / @Ostrados / @Internet.Domains / @Bernard Wright - and others - What do you think of the "hybrid" model?

I want to bring one thing up.....

This does not "feel" like a new hand registration to me. Would the consensus say it is a new hand reg?

It isn't my winner, but I wanted to bring this up now . . . have some dialogue . . . try and make the competition better next month!

When I looked into a handful of names history after your question I was somewhat surprised that most have actually significant register and expire records. I think it would be complicated to draw a line. I think if the domain was available to register in the month at standard registration fee (i.e. without any catching or auction) it should count as a hand reg regardless of earlier registration history.

JMHO
