So, we all know of the impending launch of the .DEV domains. There has also been some discussions on here about our thoughts, what we think and whether this new extension will take off or merely just be a fad.

I personally was going to take a back seat and watch from the sidelines but decided to opt in and pre-registered one (and my only one) today. Its a great name (i think) for me so decided to take a punt and see.

Will you be opting in?
Have you already pre-registered yours?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Fad, maybe not even that.

no, I assume anyone with a passion for developing makes up about .00001 % of domain buyers that pay end user prices. those who know the biz , can figure out how to put a dropcatch order in.

Back in 2015, Google caused some minor outrage in the developer community over their new rights to the .dev top-level domain, as many companies used .dev domains for internal testing websites. Two years later, Google’s acquisition of .dev, and its integration with Chrome and other browsers caused many of these testing pages to refuse to open altogether.

I only register 2 .dev domains, and the server is undeveloped.com, i couldnt open those domains with opera, and it said your connection is not private. This server could not prove that it is a****.dev; its security certificate is from undeveloped.com. This may caused by misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection. You cannot proceed because the website operator has requested heightened security for this domain.

Yes sorry, I have no education to reply, only humor for this one , sounds bizarre though, I do believe you. not sure what to say aside from legal smeagle maybe if you can handle a 5 year potential payout delay if any.

SSL-certificate is NOT issued instantly by Undeveloped...
Usually this takes up to 48h or even more...
So wait...

Sounds familiar. Google was a .mobi backer too. Probably you weren't into domains a decade ago so you don't remember.
The figures are not that good, .app had a better start and even .guru too I think because it was among the first nTLDs. The figures would be lower without the Google brand supporting the extension.
The fact remains that the market is saturated, this is what happens when you release hundreds of extensions in a short time frame. And it's not an all-purpose extension.

Well I think these numbers speak for them self's 65,965 .devs reg, a huge jump from a few days ago of 5,037.

Also talked to Google twice which you can do your self link below to Request a call, and I asked them can .dev be used for anything and the answer was yes. Its not limited to use.Example Land.dev , Home.dev and so one. Please call your self to confirm.

Can I buy a .dev domain even if I'm not a developer?

Yes! From tools to platforms, programming languages to blogs, .dev is a home for all the interesting things that you build.

This is straight from Google its self.

P.S my .dev Im building something , not trying to sell them , AS I still believe trying to sell any .extensions will be difficult IMO

Biggest Threat to .COM Dominance Is Google’s Involvement in New gTLDs

https://www.strategicrevenue.com/bi...ominance-is-googles-involvement-in-new-gtlds/

I read that piece yesterday. Probably one of the more ridiculous click-bait articles I've read in awhile. That article has a specific audience. dev will be just for some tech type folk, the general public, consumers will never know it exists.

side note - I also think it's funny Google Domains in still in beta, they have a history of that sort of thing.

Who knows, like I said I'm going develop mine and put it to use, then just sitting on it hoping and wishing a buyer comes for a parked domain.

The internet has come a long way from the days of .com, .org and .net. Now, you can get domains ending in anything from .cool to .ninja. And there's real value in unique domain endings. For starters, they can give visitors a better idea what your site is about, and as meaningful .com web addresses are gobbled up, new top-level domains open realms of possibility. Have you ever tried to claim yourname.com only to find it listed for sale at the bargain price of $2,000? Maybe yourname.dev would be a better (and more affordable) fit.

Right, it'll be some tech nerd type of extension, like I posted above, nothing the general public will ever notice. And same problem I mentioned many times before.

"Maybe yourname.dev would be a better (and more affordable) fit."

Will I be able to get mike.dev or some other obvious name? I doubt it. An early bird will get it and in the future somebody will try to register it and it won't be available.

I think the public will notice soon, remember this is Google, and knowing them they will put some huge marketing dollars into .dev and I think the public will notice then. Can you explain how the reg for .dev went from 5,000 to 65,000 today and climbing ? Thats a pretty big spike don't you think. What ever the case may be for me its a gamble that I'm taking to build my sites. Only time will tell,if that number of 65,000 doubles , then this will get interesting IMO

No. Public only notices new extensions via websites/development. These aren't going to be consumer facing types of sites. They've failed at lots of things. How is their registrar working out, that's still in beta? Where is all that money that was going to make them take down GoDaddy? How is that working out.

Funny thing from that article:

Here are 42 more things that Google will want to eventually become main-stream.

one of the extensions listed, my favorite of them all:
.boo

Let me know when .boo becomes mainstream.

I agree 100% Public only notices new extensions via websites/development. And thats why its best if someone securing a new .dev or .homes or any other to build a site and show case it. Visual is the best thing IMO
