Interestingly Chinese government has treated Domain address equal to a physical address.
Source: https://coreile.com/p190223.html

"A recent announcement by the Chinese government has changed the concept of a domain. It's not only an address to build your store, it can also be used as an official address to register your business.

On January 1 this year, the Chinese government introduced a law which allows small ecommerce merchants to use their domain as the official address when applying for a "Business License for Individual Industrial and Commercial Household" (个体工商户营业执照). This is good news for the 65 million small merchants in China. Many of these merchants do not operate any store in the physical world but their entire business exists in the digital world. So, it is natural to use a digital address for a digital business.

According to Chinese news media, Ms. Fang WANG became the first ecommerce merchant on January 9 to acquire a business license based on this new law. The license lists the domain Qifuwu.vip as the official address for operating an online business to provide wholesale, retail, and servicing activities of electronic products. The domain is already operating, and you can actually see a copy of the business license at the bottom of its home page.

This new law indicates a change in the traditional thinking that a business must exist at a physical address. No more! Now you can open a store at an address in the digital world without any concern for your physical location. Since the internet is global by its very nature, your store becomes global on day one. Therefore, when you name your business, make sure it is easy to pronounce and remember for the global audience."

Well of course the CN govt wants to treat virtual addresses as real addresses. they register domains right an left. if I had a dollar for every domain I dropped that ended up being a spammy Chinese park page, I'd be retired lol

It was not as simple and smooth as I expected. I tried to apply with the domain name, but the government did not give an accurate reply. It's been a month.

I think there are some reasons:

1. China recently announced that all online merchants (including those currently operating on Taobao and other e-commerce platforms) must pay texes.

2. Domain names are indeed digital addresses and unique. Buying domain names is like buying houses and there are records of details about buyers and sellers. So the Chinese government can verify the online merchants' identities easily. Emails are unique but we cannot verify identity by using emails.

3. There are many small online merchants selling online but working at homes. It is nonsense to use home addresses as business addresses, and it is hard for the merchants to provide business addresses if selling on Taobao and other e-commerce platforms.

4. It may be easier for the government to find out those small online merchants who do not pay taxes.

It is a good news for domainers because the demand for domain names in China will be higher.

You think too much. People can't sleep, but people can trade without domain names.

Things in digital forms are generally cheaper than physical forms due to lower costs.

Well this sounds dubious AF and probably related to seizing property or jailing people given the source.

Yeah, you can be the first person to pay a house price for something with unlimited supply and no intrinsic value.

Interesting a registration service uses a .VIP address, confusion from legacy .Com or .Net both owned by Chinese. Qifuwu in com is available for sale, I wonder if they will switch? I would imagine all "lucky" and dropped 6 digit numericals might once again have a boom. lol.

For those interested in keeping up in english about Chinese business activities- chinaskinny.com has a mailing list, I have read a number of articles in the past about developments.

I can see several ways for the Chinese merchant to use this to dodge taxes, rather than pay taxes . . .

To an email address on that domain I assume... Maybe it's by convention like [email protected] :glasses:

Yea, but often enough you need physical stuff. Such ass certain business documents that are needed as hard copy. Even then, if you did need to order a physical item for your business where would it go? o.O

I wonder if we'll be seeing domains sold on Ali Express anytime soon.

I think many small online merchants store their physical business items at homes or in rented storerooms.
