What are your thoughts on someone spending $13K on a five-letter domain but not developing it even after seven months?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
No simple answer here. It depends on the domain name and plan of the owner.

Happens everyday, no big deal.

Impossible to tell anything without knowing the name

I sold a domain to a business for $12,400 over 6 years ago and it is still not developed yet. I'm sure someone somewhere has paid 6 figures plus for a name and never did anything with it... and has no intention of ever selling it either.

for some companies $12k is not money, $12k for them could be like $12 for you.

13k and 7 months?.....First, 13k is not too much when you look at the completed sales charts. Second, 7 months is a millisecond in the domain aftermarket business.

Thanks, everyone. I was just curious.

Were you going to offer them a lessor amount, thinking they didn't need it? Or was it your sale?

It’s impossible to answer this question without knowing more about the name.

But no, you don’t have to develop ANY domains that are aimed to sell. A simple landing page will do fine. If the name is good, it will get the attention.

Samething as:

"I know a person who was married for several months but did not have sex"

I don't really care. It's none of my business.

@wwwweb yeah, it was my sale via Afternic last summer. Apparently, the buyer was from China (new registrar~Aliyun).

Probably they will lose a lot of money.

I don't think you should feel anything. Some names are held because of their liquidation value and never developed. Other names are implemented and integrated into a business immediately. It's just part of the game.

I had that happen as well, but I knew ahead the sale was a chinese spectulator. You can’t blame them. Its a Great way for those who are well heeled to move money out of china too.

I think most domain sails end up undeveloped. It's why undeveloped is branded so 😋

Most of my sails are still .. undev... some still point to bodis or undev.

Happens everyday. 3 names I sold in 2017 are never developed. Still sitting there. All sold to Chinese

Many people buy into a lie that a great name automatically means a brand and makes it easier for you to succeed and nothing can be further from the truth. Just look at beer.com. Great name but still went bankrupt. It takes so much more than a nice domain name to build a brand and successful business and some don't realize that until after they have bought a pricey domain.

I still wonder about some true reported pom pom waving sales or if they fell through, $300K purchases like Inspection , being parked no 301, nothing. Look at archive and it was at the supposed customers only a short time- like only a few days pointed to the reported customers site. Then after that? Gone.

Total silence on that one, nobody ever explained that, nor obligated to obviously but in my book something is amiss.
