Social Network Gab.com being threatened by GoDaddy: 24 hours to transfer or suspension

backstory: Gab is a social network alternative to twitter. their selling point is free speech (all speech is welcome, including what you believe might be hate speech.) which is basically is the first amendment. no unlawful material is allowed, but virtually any speech is. recently they purchased the "gab com" domain for $220k.

this site is very controversial as a result, with mainstream media outlets claiming it is popular with nazi and anti-semite messages. the site has 800,000 users and has experienced modest growth recently so it really isnt all bad hate speech. regardless, those disgusting messages on the site by some users are also lawful no matter how distasteful they are. as a result of these media attacks, (and the recent revelation that the synagogue shooter in pittsburgh yesterday had an active gab profile) gab is being unfairly targeted by smear campaigns online reporting the site as "a hate speech site" via email to gab's service providers.

gabs host (microsoft) revoked its contract with gab a few months ago

gabs payment providers (paypal and stripe) just revoked their services

just a few minutes ago, godaddy has said they will stop working with gab:
(i cant post the image or link idk why)
"BREAKING: Godaddy is threatening to suspend our domain (which is worth six figures) if we do not transfer to a new provider by tomorrow. This is madness."

the complexity of the situation is compounded by the fact that Gab is on a payment plan to fully own the domain since they recently purchased it. the broker/escrow agent control this which makes it even more difficult for the company to transfer to a new registrar by EOD tomorrow.

I understand that Godaddy is a private business and its clauses may allow it to do this, but this seems extreme overreaction. "24 hours to transfer or else" is a very menacing way of doing business.

-if you were in charge of gab what would you do? create your own payment processor, host, and DNS? they got deplatformed quickly... i guess they could try to get an offshore Hosting company or invest in native hosting.

-what is the most "free speech" friendly DNS provider there is?

-is it fair for internet infrastructure companies to de-platform a small upstart social network because of controversial speech? or should companies like DNS and hosting should be regulated and allow any customer as long as it is lawful content being hosted.

According to a few in this thread, GAB's logo is a smiling green frog, that has been appropriated by neo-nazis, white supremacists and the alt-right. Don't know weather to laugh or cry about this idiotic statement... maybe both!

According to millions around the world, the frog symbolizes fertility, abundance, wealth, prosperity, good luck, success, strength, courage, death, witchcraft and magic. It is considered in all mythologies as a masculine element.

Paul McCartney, wrote this lovely song, which was heard by and adored by hundreds of children all over the world.

Paul McCartney & The Frog Chorus - We All Stand Together (1984)
Enjoy the Frog Song... and please don't tell Paul that the Frog has been appropriated by those nasty right wingers at GAB...

Gabby the frog is not even used as a mascot anymore. More importantly, all voices are welcome at Gab. It skews right simply because Facebook and Twitter is chronically censoring conservative voices but it is 100% sure that Gab has all kinds though very much united around protecting civil liberties, notably free speech, warts and all, with or without frogs.

Yes, I've been noticing this censorship in the last few years, but especially since 2017, against Conservatives or right wingers, who have the audacity to speak up against Leftist ideology. Since the big boys like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and others are run by a very high % of Leftists, it's more than obvious that their anti-conservative bias will prevail.

It's also interesting that Lefties will usually say: If you don't like Google or Twitter etc. and you don't want to rely on them, then create your own similar sites.

So along comes GAB and does that... allowing Conservative voices that had been banned or censored from Leftist platforms, to freely speak their minds.

Two years later, these evil leftist platforms try to silence Gab permanently. What a bunch of evil bullies they have become. They are getting too big and powerful for their own good and are in dire need of getting their wings clipped so that they can come back to earth, away from their pedestals, where they were placed, with the full cooperation & approval from the Liberal Media, Hollywood, Universities etc.

Good luck to Epic and you! Keep up the Good Fight! I'm with you!!!

Good summary -- that is about right.

Free Speech and Truth are great detergents. Here in the domain industry, we saw a good example of that just today:

https://twitter.com/EpikDotCom/status/1084943887028768770

The problem was detected and solved all within about 24 hours. If there was no free speech, the prospect that someone could have detected and informed is very low.

Until such a time as reliable, unbiased and fairly strong alternatives to Google, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, show up, it's gonna be one hellava struggle and fight to put these big bullies in their place, or if they get their wings clipped!!!

A little reality check.

GAB bans people too, they have rules that get enforced like most places. Those very same people can cry about their Freedom of Speech.

Epik, I'm sure has enforced their TOS from time to time, just like other registrars. Other registrars might actually be more about freedom. Some are ok with porn. See Namecheap.

Big bullies like Twitter? You guys all have active Twitter accounts, GAB does.

GAB also imports tweets from Twitter. I remember when it came back online, checking out their sports section. Of course I expected the racist comments when a Serena Williams topic came up. But I thought stuff like this was funny - https://gab.com/barstoolsportsTweets

The sports section was a bit lacking, I guess this helps fill it up with some content. Also, the links go back out to Twitter. If you want to compete, don't advertise your competitors.

But are they really competitors?

Twitter:
"With more than 336 million monthly active users worldwide as of the first quarter of 2018"

Let me know when they get even 1% of that.

If you don't want to get banned from those places, don't violate their rules. Not complicated.

JB - With all due respect for intellect, I think you miss the point.

Did you ever stop and consider that just MAYBE the reason a lot more people have not been banned from the likes of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube is because there is viable Alt-Tech waiting in the wings?

If guys like Jordan Peterson can be banned from Patreon, there is clearly a creeping trend of censorship. That should trouble you. Then again, if you are on board with the Marxists, you would celebrate it.

Your liberal establishment bias is consistent. If we met in person, I would still shake your hand. That said, I am very sure that humanity is better served by checks and balances.

For Alt-Tech to be effective, it simply needs to exist and survive. It is like an air bag on a vehicle. You might hope to never use it. Air-bags don't compete with brakes. They both have their function. Get it now?

Long live Alt-Tech!

There are a lot of sweeping allegations of bias in this thread.

Is everyone aware that Facebook quietly funded anti-semitic propaganda to discredit their critics?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technol...earing-rivals-threatening-democracy-distract/

People like to objectify the villain. If they can't identify it, they will still give it a label like "Nazi" or "Alt-Right" or in the case of Vietnam "Charlie".

As for Soros, he may or may not be a nice guy. However, you can be assured that he is not acting alone and quite possibly not even sovereignly.

Uncensored Alt-Tech allows people to discuss these matters. By contrast, a 2018 article on the Telegraph is probably not going to give you any more than you are supposed to know or think.

Free Speech enables the search for truth. Used responsibly, it is a wonderful gift to humanity. Metcalfe's law is still in effect. The value of the Alt-Tech network increases exponentially with the number of nodes/users.

As of January 2019, there are many independent content sites, but very few have a critical mass of community. Gab is one of them. BitChute, the video alternative to YouTube, is another.

From the article:
Mr Soros, the Jewish billionaire investor and philanthropist, has long been the target of conspiracy theories spread by far-right outlets.

Mr Gaspard said that there was a “concerted rightwing effort to demonise Mr Soros”, which had led to the delivery of a pipe bomb to his home.

“You are no doubt also aware that much of this hateful and blatantly false and anti-Semitic information is spread via Facebook,” he said.

This article is full of BS! How can you demonize a person that is presently the most evil demon on earth? This SOB calls himself a Jew? This cowardly bastard sold his own people to the Nazi's... and it's all on tape... courtesy of "60 minutes"
SHOCKING George Soros admits Nazi collaboration with no regrets

First:
"People like to objectify the villain. If they can't identify it, they will still give it a label like "Nazi" or "Alt-Right" or in the case of Vietnam "Charlie".

Hypocrite much? Then you go on doing the exact same thing. Liberal mindset, Marxists?

Didn't specifically touch anything in my post.

It comes across that "Alt-Tech" is just used for marketing and you're milking it for all it's worth.

You mention people getting banned. Again, their platform, their rules, don't break them.

So people get banned from some of these places and go to GAB.

Where do people that were banned from GAB go? Maybe that's the real "alt-tech" One of GAB's banned members was on Twitter listing alternatives, where people can have real free speech.

What about your TOS? What about the example I used with Namecheap? Do you think there are other registrars that actually are more free than yours? Some that would be ok with the kind of content GAB has, plus hardcore (legal) porn? Wouldn't those be the true Freedom of Speech/Expression registrars?

I just checked this one out:
If guys like Jordan Peterson can be banned from Patreon,

He wasn't banned.

"Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin announced via a joint YouTube video on New Year’s Day they were leaving Patreon on Jan. 15, due to what Peterson says is “Patreon’s proclivity to censor.”

Left on his own. They, just like your platform, have rules and such.

So when GAB bans, how is that not censorship? See how that works?

Latest “all inclusive” commercial by GD. Just saw this.

This sure is super hypocritical imo when they boot off gab. “When you are stuck in someone elses story, create your own..”. Yea right.

Pure bullshit. Right. As long as your story is politically correct and it fits in the selectively enforced TOS!!!!

@Rob Monster you should get a laugh about how ridiculous this is. Epik supports free speech, but GD doesnt.

Oh, the UK.

That makes it all the more apparent why we left your country and started our own.

Just noticed there's a Pimbo in this thread that goes by the name of NYJimbo, who seems to have a very nervous finger that keeps hitting the Dislike button on my Posts.

There's nothing worse than assh*les that do this and yet have nothing to say, nothing to contribute to this thread, whether good or bad!

Hey NYPimbo... The Cat Got Your Tongue? Come out of the closet and speak your mind, but first shove your twitchy finger where the sun don't shine!!!

The
Hate to break it to you but you were tricked into thinking you left.

To be fair, true liberty is still on the horizon. That much is true.

As to whether or not the US is or not a UK colony, or whether any nation or any individual actually has sovereignty, this is a useful debate but outside of the scope of a thread about digital censorship.

Two notable developments from Epik last week in terms of digital liberty and free speech:

1. The Anonymize VPN is free for everyone and works like a champ. It includes UK exit points so now anyone can look like a Brit online:

https://anonymize.com/vpn/

2. The acquisition of BitMitigate last week now means that any Blockchain domain, and for that matter any virtual domain added at BitMitigate can now resolve just like any other domain. This was Tweeted last night:

https://twitter.com/EpikDotCom/status/1096987291157962752

Coming soon: .TRUTH TLD where the domains are owned Forever, can be owned anonymously and where the domain is paired with a free DDoS-resistant Wiki. Think of it like a decentralized Wikipedia.

I think it comes down to Epik having a track record of standing for due process. I did talk to Torba and assured him that as long as he was willing to enforce his ToS, Epik would be fine to be their registrar.

In the meantime, with the acquisition of BitMitigate.com announced last week, we can now provide the full stack of capabilities to secure a site from end-to-end and basically make it both censor-proof and DDoS proof:

Domain

DNS

Content Delivery Network

SSL Certificate

Website Hosting

Virtual Private Network (for users)

Wow.

Been away with some family stuff and working on content for recently acquire domains. Was looking at domain transfers, etc. Logged in to my Epik account and asked a question. To my surprise, it was Rob who was on the live chat. woot woot. Pointed me to this after asking about domain privacy.

Even though I consider myself a conservative (God fearing, gun toting Jew), I do not agree with the far right... by that I mean neo-nazis, Stormfront, KKK, etc... HOWEVER I also respect their right to exist and the right to their opinion.

You can't fix stupid, BUT it is their right. I am a firm believer in "Your rights end where my nose begins."

Yes, let white supremacists, Black Lives Matters, Black Panthers, etc have a place to organize, who cares... much the same as with fundamentalist/extremists religions zealots, etc. We live in the United States and people have that right. That's the beauty of the country. As long as they are not doing you harm or on your property, they are not doing anything wrong. Hence the big difference between Nazi Germany, Communist China/Soviet Union and many other places in the world.

I would also agree with the fact that private companies have the right to do business with whomever they want.

What is disturbing however is that in a sense, we NEED registrars... it is not like a bakery, groceries etc where you have a ton of choices. A FEW companies really do have near full control over someone's livelihood.

If registering a domain name was a GUARANTEED right... or at the very least Digital Property, I would have ZERO issues with other service providers where there are no barriers to entry, to limiting whom they do business with. i.e. you can always start your own blog.

Even hosting can be done by yourself... but if internet access was looked at as a "fundamental need"... then let people own their domains and all is good.

Until that happens, GoDaddy as one of the largest, if not THE largest vehicles to having an online presence, simply kicking off people they "don't agree with politically or just for any reason..." that is truly disturbing for rights.

Despite despising BLM or some uber liberal/communist group, If they were kicked off... as a conservative who likely sees things completely differently, I would be there standing with them for their freedom of speech.

As someone who runs a number of gun websites... this was completely eye opening. Really helpful to see how some registrars reacted to this and quite a few others in the business who would use their business to politicize their viewpoints.

@Rob Monster over time you will have 100% of my domains. It would be one HEFTY bill to transfer them all now. lol.

Thanks @maksimfa. I think that is the mature attitude on the subject of free speech. It is not about whether we agree with it. This is about basic, God-given, human rights.

There are certain media outlets that tried to cast me as misanthropic anti-semite which is totally inaccurate in every way. They did this because they don't want compromise. They want silence. The fact is that I have openly challenged anti-semites and misanthropes on Gab and elsewhere. I have also engaged ANTIFA and SPLC in search of compromise. They want no such thing -- only silence.

As for the problem of hyper-concentration of market power, it is true. There are not that many capable registrars. The industry is poised to consolidate further.

There are also very few alternatives to CloudFlare. The BitMitigate deal is important in this regards. Consider for a moment that CloudFlare knows the IP addresses for people who visit about 10 million websites, many of which serve controversial content. If Nest thermostats have microphones, then it would be reasonable to assume that someone besides CloudFlare has access to those IP address lists.

So I actually found this a bit ironic.... what's worse... Nazis or pedophiles?

Seems like YouTube has been letting Pedos run rampant on YouTube for quite a long time. Only recently did a story bring this up in a bigger way.

YouTube has been letting pre-teen, bordernline porn be posted with millions of views and comments.

https://seekingalpha.com/news/3435439-youtube-ads-pulled-exploitation-fears

I wonder if any credit card processors or banks are going to stop doing business with Google... doubt it.

Pulling advertising is just saving face.

Who cares... Until... their hate materializes IRL. Then it's no longer an issue about abstract rights. The next victim could be you or someone dear to you. Even if we are not directly affected by their outbursts of hatred, doesn't mean we should be indifferent.
But the Potus thinks white supremacists are Very Fine People, this is where the problem begins. Then the problem continues when citizens a) continue to support him and b) do not hold him accountable for his attitude. How do you want to promote tolerance when your efforts are undermined at the very top.
Too easy to say it's not your fault when you help deranged people flourish.

And there is a difference between simply having controversial clients through no choice of your own, and actively courting their business. I don't think you have any moral duty to assist extremists simply because you believe in free speech. You have plenty of other options available to further the cause.

My role model as heroes of free speech would rather be people like Access now, Qurium Media (just to quote a few examples from the top of my head), people who help others circumvent censorship and access information freely. These people help make the world a better place.
Providing material or digital support to extremists in the name of upholding free speech doesn't really contribute to free speech. It simply enables hate speech.

I tend to agree here -- no amount of virtue-signaling can explain why YouTube would be mainstreaming extreme vice in all its forms. Much of it is protected by free speech. For the moment, some of it remains legal, though the same folks that want to legalize infanticide are presumably in favor of legalizing pedophilia, bestiality, etc. Free speech allows humanity the opportunity to present the case why these are bad ideas, and to call out those who peddle these bad ideas. Protect your souls folks. These are evil times.

Believe it or not, there are very fine people on both side. You can't tell me that everyone who comes out to protest on both side that day are all very bad people. As much as you'd want to demonize POTUS on that, what he said was the absolute truth.

He has denounced the White supremacist on various occasions, time and again. But that's not want you want to hear. You only promote what supports your narratives.

Please keep your Trump Hate in check. It would be just as easy to cite all of the times that Obama did NOTHING to prevent Black Panthers from intimidating non-blacks from voting at the polls, or not stopping BLM.

There is just as much racism on the other side of the spectrum.

Your discussion is much akin to the propaganda that Hitler used to wipe out Jews... "we should not let them socialize, they might hurt you."

If you believe in the Constitution and unalienable rights, this is what it is.

BLM has all the rights they want to protest and scream "Kill Whitey" all they want. As long as they are not on MY PROPERTY or threating me... it is their God given right to be racist pricks.

The whole notion of "stop them before they MAY do something bad" is a very slipper slope... and the very same thing both sides have used... "Sadam MAY use WMD in Iraq" and countless others.

You can't pick and choose which side enjoys freedoms.

And as it was pointed out, Trump has on many times denounced White Supremacists. And for crying out loud... Ivanka converted to an Orthodox Jew! Trump regularly attends services and Shabbat dinner.

Think he is a White Supremacist that wants to kill his daughter?
