Hi,

Just today, I've tried to register a few expired domain names which are 4 characters in length (.com) at 2 reputable websites (1 of them is a big web-hosting provider).
They were available up to the moment when I click Add to Cart, and they instantly became unavailable. 1 of them was registered the moment I enter the domain name at the site's search field, how I found out was by checking the Whois.

May I know if someone could help me out by advising which sites or company I can register domain names without fear of it been taken by the site/company?

Kindly help and Thank You in advance.

Yes 4 letters, e.g. evic.com
You mean individuals can't register domain names that are 1 to 4 letters in length?

They were not available, must have been an error. All 4L .coms have not been avail. to hand reg for many years now. They all get renewed or caught first.

I've found a few recently expired ones but got bamboozled during the registration process at that hosting website today. This is when I went to search online and found out about “domain name front running”. Apparently, big and reputable hosting sites can't be trusted when it comes to registering premium domain names.
May I ask where you register your domain names?

There’s no conspiracy. The 4L coms you tried to register were not available to begin with. Come back when you’ve actually hand registered one.

Epik.com is where a good chunk of mine reside. Good luck to you :)

evic.com
I've just used that as an example, that's not the one I try to register earlier.

As you say, they have already been registered, so what's the harm of posting the real domain(s) in question here?

They were all caught by DropCatch / HugeDomains. They have invested $$ millions and operate thousands of ICANN Accredited registrars. Each registrar has a limited number of connections to the Verisign registry, so it's a simple numbers game. It's all fully automated. It is next to impossible to handreg a dropping domain faster than they do, even using features like Dynadot's 1-click registration, never mind going through the process of adding it to cart and checking out!

You stand a marginally better chance using multiple registrars' API's (e.g. Dynadot, Namesilo, etc.), but it's like gambling in a casino - the deck is still stacked against you!

They were not available to begin with. Sometimes it happens in registrars like GoDaddy where during search a domain is shown available, while you click on add to cart it shows unavailable. This is mostly because of a bug/cache issue.

With that being said, I shifted to Epik recently, because it's better to be safe than sorry. Till now, I do not have any complaints there and I hope to be a long term user. Thanks @Rob Monster for Epik's transparent approach.

Yeah I saw the DropCatch / HugeDomains using Whois, their names weren't there earlier when I check right after I failed to hand reg.

Anyway this ain't the first time it happened and I'm kind of sick of this, so I will use Epik in the future and hope for the best. Thank You all for recommending. If there are more, please share.

So this is your mistake. (One of them).

No how ever reputable hosting provider can be reputable registrar. Let hosters host sites, and registrars register domains.

Which registrars will you recommend?

I've been using NameSilo for a couple of years. No single unresolved issue or hassles.
Pricing, too, is transparent - what you see is what you pay, unlike some other registrars such as GoDaddy.

Thanks for all the recommendations and advice.

I will try out Epik and contact Rob Monster, I guess that is my only option left.

@multijon - welcome to Np. I have had thousands of domains spread across GoDaddy, NameSilo, NameCheap and others and have never had a problem. Registrars are not in the business of "snatching" domains from people's carts or accounts (except maybe one in particular ... search through Np to find past discussions).

This is simply a case of a beginner complaining about something that wasn't going to happen anyway. The Huge Domains / DropCatch APIs will get the best domains at the drop every time.

front running is real thing but I agree with others that it was not the case for the OP scenario, it is impossible to catch an expired 4L in first place, you need to be faster by milliseconds from thousands of drop catching servers.

However front running can happen with regular domains.

I really appreciate for all the advice I have gotten and thank you all once again. Yes I am really new to this and I apologize if I sound more like I am complaining, but I really am just trying to find out if there are solutions other than buying them via auctions or paying premiums prices. It seems like it is impossible to hand reg 4L domain names.
