The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
A good domainer is patience, He simply learn from Pros and expert and spend a lot of time on reading, Joining meaningful Forum and purchase a SEO-domain to start with...

While a bad domainer just want to buy a domain today and sell tomorrow, which is impossible... If he doesn't know about what domianing is...

I'm a good domainer, and I can't make profit. So maybe a bad domainer is one who makes profit.

A good domainer buys a domain which can sell for 1000, but to raise cash drops the price to 100, and sells one of such names this way, and all the rest need to be dropped.

A bad domainer buys lots of stupid domains, but also some ok ones, and asking price unrealistically varies from 10K to 1M, and doesn't realize that once a buyer is lost, noone else will buy the domain, and insists on the price at all costs. Then an enduser comes and want to get a good deal on one of these names, but there is no room for negotiation, and this makes the buyer more desparate. And the bad domainer raises the price a little bit more, and the enduser buys in panic. This arrogance continues as long as luck continues.

Wow this is kind of sad

Actually I make profit but in domain terms, not in cash terms, because I reinvest all. Renewal is the big problem. 1 year ago I had 100 domains, now over 1000.

I need to decide whether I should act like a good (nice) domainer or a bad (jerk) domainer. Maybe make a mix. A domain may have zero visits for 10 years, but this doesn't mean it won't sell for 10K. This domain business is a very wild game, and I'm trying to tame it. This is not a game between buyers and sellers. It is usually not the case that buyers are interested but price is high. Buyers are sleeping, someone needs to wake them up, but sellers can't do it. They shouldn't be too awake either.

Good domainer - Kind, helpful, courteous and encouraging.

Bad domainer - Unkind, mean, rude and discouraging.

You will find that both of these types of domainers can be successful, if success is measured by only monetary reasoning.

Bad domainers most usually go after that fast money, they are very very greedy, the will rob Peter to pay Paul.

One thing I learned in life, fast money doesn’t last and karma is self inflicted pain. It is a very hard and painful lesson when it releases it wrath.

Business is business , sometimes things don’t seem fair to one party or the other, a good domainer will take accountability from thier fuckups, learn from it and move forward, taking accountability for your actions, over paying for a name, registering a shitty name , selling a name to cheap, being in a holding pattern of not making profits or sales, all this is due to the person, not the industry or people within the industry, own your mistakes, don’t pawn em, and move forward. Always no matter what , check yourself and your ethics, a good domainer keeps thier ethics straight. Don’t wear your ass on your shoulder, translation, don’t have an attitude of being better than anyone else, no one is better than anyone. That is a good domainer IMO

What distinguishes a good domainer from a bad one? What does one that the other doesn't?

It takes a lot of abilities.

The ability to learn.
The ability to find domains.
The ability to know what price makes sense.
The ability to actually be able to pay.
The ability to mange the domains.
The ability to negotiate a sale.
The ability to manage cash flow.

and many others...

Each one of us is a mixture of good and bad with varying proportions.

I think we are answering here, successful domainer vs unsuccessful domainer.

Domaining has just 3 ingredients: Buying, Selling and Dropping. A successful domainer is the one who masters all these 3 properly.

Thanks for nice topic. Everyone should read this thread.

The good ones know what to buy and who/how to sell. The bad ones does not know.

The good ones only buy assets that are sell-able. Bad ones wont.

The good ones when they don't have money, they create innovative things and present an opportunity to the world. Bad ones cannot.

The good ones stays in the game. The bad ones finds ways to exist.

The good ones are good sales closer. The bad ones are not.

The good ones finds ways to create value to their customers. The bad ones wont.

The good ones are also good people at heart. The bad ones may be not.

My simplified answer is:

- A good domainer has a steady average cash flow.
- A bad domainer hasn’t.

How to become a good domainer?

Some answers are already listed in this thread. Willingness to learn and to work hard are two main factors.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

Registering trademarks, shill bidding at auctions and being dishonest in general.

good domainer is the one who really loves his / her hobby, like a philatelist with a great passion to stamps. money is secondary
