advice How do I make money from my names? Dumbman.com

NameSilo
Watch
I have some names that receive some traffic without any advertising -
I just threw up the Presidents twitter feed on Dumbman.com a week ago and receive 40 unique a day with no advertising - all organic. Pacemakers.com - same thing but more traffic.
Instead of always selling my names how should I monetize them? Its not something I have ever done, I usually buy and flip.
Is it more profitable to build a site or to flip a name?

Where are you getting the traffic stats? Hosting account, or Google Analytics, or other source?

Because plenty of traffic is just bots.

If the traffic can be converted to paid clicks then maybe it is worth thinking about but many of the income sources you'd want to try insist on a developed site with content. Just putting ads on a page with no content can get Google to de-index it, and doing that with Adsense gets you banned from Adsense.

TLDR - only consider if serious monetisable traffic and you have time or money to dedicate to this with risk of little or no return.

Just a wordpress traffic plugin?

Just a wordpress traffic plugin?

OK you can install Google Analytics via a wordpress plugin, I would recommend that if it is not what you are using because it filters bots well, gives a lot of info, and since others use it, it allows comparison. See where traffic comes from - if it is all from China and Brazil probably no value. If it is all from Silicon Valley...

It's way too little traffic to monetize. You will get a couple of pennies per day.

The (small) chance that someone might buy on your for sale landing page is more worth it to go for than a dollar or two per month.

@uglydork put up landing pages with an email sign-up form. See what people will leave emails for.

If you get email sign-ups, you have a business you can build. If not, move on to another idea/domain. :)

Long gone are the days of money making minisites (as we used to call em back then). Any website nowadays requires a near full time dedication. The only exception to this are leads / affiliates whereby you have a one page site with a form, but this requires a relatable domain with a lot of traffic (like thousands of human visitors per month minimum).

So if you have a high traffic name related to loans, hotels, a category killer or such you maybe able to do a lead based site.

For the most part though, unless you're willing to dedicate full time resource to develop then you may be better of waiting for inbound offers.

I agree with @Dave

I developed my first domain back in 2005 using affiliate links and banners. From 2005 to 2013 I managed 3 networks of mini-sites averaging 6 sites per network. Two networks fell by the way-side as more attention went into the third. From 2013 to 2017 I just managed one network of 15 sites, which sadly collapsed due to poor attention to security updates and infrastructure, which ultimately lead to vulnerabilities being exploited and sites lost with no backups.

Lessons learned.

Mini-information-sites are definitely a thing of the past, however, mini-lead-generators are still holding strong. Capturing potential customers/clients in a filtering process, creating a more motivated buyer when they are forwarded through a call to action to the primary service/brand.

I hung the hat up on PPC. There is a sweet spot in every niche as they rise and fall in their respected trending phase. Besides, today's internet users don't want to be bombarded with ad links, banners and popups. They use ad blockers to avoid the intrusion of comfort.

Personally, I would suggest going one of the following routes:
  • PPL (Pay per lead) - (Affiliate)
  • Lead generator for your own product/service - (Run a targeted niche campaign to feed a specific product/service you have)
  • White-Label - Providing someone else's product/service seamlessly integrated under your brand name. - (Rapid scaling potential)
  • An official product/service site - (Very time intensive, but better pay-offs in the long term game)
That's just my opinion though.
