Hi all

Do you think .in extension is valuable? i didn't see much of .in buy sell activities here in namepros.

thank you for your feedback.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The issue i would have is the traffic is cheap even if all names are taken. There are still premium names as long as they are targeting the millions but would see better return with a different geo cc.

As far as i know, .in must be much more powerful for Indians than .co.in but only invest in .in if you think businesses in India will buy. If you think you will sell it to people in other countries for good amount because .in sounds very good extension then i don't think its going to happen because no matter how good an extension is, if its a country level domain then it is only good for local people.

Folks, do your homework. Read many old discussions here on .in .

I don't want to hype the extension, but world's 4th largest economy , possibly growing to be the 3rd largest in 10 years, should require no hype.

You need to give businesses time to understand all the nuances of using domain names, frankly India is still in early stages. So if you don't have the patience, you are in the wrong investment time frame.

Don't fool yourselves thinking only Indian companies need .in or .co.in , there is and will be plenty of interest from around the world, looking to participate in the Indian market

You are right. There is already so much interest from around the world to participate in Indian Market and it will increase ofcourse. But how is it related to for someone from different country to use a .in for the business not related to India ?

Country level domain names also has some requirements and rules and regulation which any government can change at any time. No big business in the world would go for a ccTLD unless they belong to that country. .in is my favourite too but i would only buy it for my personal use and won't expect this to be sold to any American business for $$$$.

Its just my opinion, please don't get hyper and just disagree with a smile :)

Well there are businesses already using .in for things not related to India - here are a couple Move.in and Walk.in . But I think this market is going to be much smaller than US or UK or German companies or others who want to run their business in India using a .in and/or .co.in . This trends exists in other cctlds - .de, .co.uk , .ca and so forth

Ok. I am new to this industry. Was just sharing my view. Ofcourse you people are more experienced and have better knowledge. Best of luck!

This is what i read

Every country in the world has a country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) consisting of two letters representing the nation on the internet. ... Some ccTLDs are unrestricted and available for anyone to register. But most require a physical presence in the country to register the domain name.

and also in South Africa, its not easy for outsiders to get .za domain. So if we build a business site on some other country's ccTLD then there are chances that their government might change the rules in future. I may be completely wrong but just shared what i thought.

From my own experience...
Never had any inbound offers above $1K from India... and almost always they are no higher than $300.
Also no any success with EMDs and Indian companies at .co.in/.com/.org - all my .INs were ignored.

My personal experience in dealing .IN prove the other way, I have completed several xxxx usd sales over last few years..

If you have some quality names , certainly you must have received such offers by now.. if you are saying you have not received any .. perhaps check your inventory and improve the quality or your sales strategies? ..

P.s: Its only advise ,I know you are very experienced and seasoned domainer.. but may not has much success in .IN ,? .. worth introspecting your sales strategy , just a friendly advise

Since everyone is giving their INpinion on .in, here are mine:

1) You cant understand .in fully from the "outside"

2) I would bucket a majority % of people on NP as being from the "outside"

3) Based on technicals alone, .IN is easily in the 5 biggest extensions( based on growth potential over the next 10-15 years)

4) Govt of India has made it(relatively)safe and easy for international businesses to buy, keep, trade and own .in domains. If you are paranoid or dont believe it, then its probably because of your xenophobia

5) Indian market is HUGE. After .com, .net and .cn which other extension has a bigger potential/actual market size than India/ .IN? Market size matters. Good ex where this applies is the .CO vs .IN debate. I do not believe .CO can outdo .IN in the long term. I watch LLL.co prices weekly also. Some of the prices are BAD. I wish them both well regardless.

6) .IN is the worst thing for short term domaining.

7) .IN domain prices (reseller+ end user) are currently very "commoditized, but historically the "commodity" has has spent good time on the lower(vs higher) end of the commodity's price spectrum. Thing is, if prices "go up", there's alot of $$$ to be made, even before markets "cool down"

8) .IN is a relatively quieter market in general. People actively discuss over msngers and apps, and many sellers and buyers dont proactively discuss publicly/report their activities. You learn about more sales just from knowing people invested in .IN.

9) Good one word .INs are impossible to find at affordable prices.

10) On the reseller market, good .INs avg ~15-20% annualized ROI

11) Attitudes about domains in India are currently a downside. Yes i noticed that some Indian end users/inquirers are low ballers. But even if that is an issue, why dont we focus on the other Indians who WILL negotiate fairer prices? Once again, its a huge market, so even a small % = a large #.

12) In the long term, you can get rich. Please remember i said long term. If you are a domainer who expects magic profits with stories like: "oh , i bought xxxx.ext X days ago and today i sold it for $500", you cant see the .IN riches. But you can buy the best names, such as LLL.ins, and HOLD(like i said before, this is not for the domainers who can't hold their domain longer than they hold their pee) for 15-20 years and make $$(we are already 10-12 years into that period)

13) Indians have no solid, secure, recognized, affordable(relatively) extension to use other than .IN.

14) .IN's bear market either just ended, or is about to end.

15) .IN is a financially stable investment- its here to stay, backed by over a billion people(only China can rival in population) who speak English, renewal and reg prices are solid and well prices/very affordable(high renewal fees killed .info IMO. renewals @ $12.15/yr? WHHAT?), guaranteed market price growth, etc etc.

Cheers!

When you deal with tens of TLDs - you clearly see which TLDs are really good in terms of conversion and cashflow volume... And which TLDs are average or weak (waste of money and time).
That's all I can add here.

I would like to add:

1) Government (cyber security guidelines) to prevent hacking and spam ( in their view ) has strictly recommended to use dot in extension (country code) in place of all dot com for all Internal Government websites and Government companies catering to local population and this is now official and a wave of registration and implementation has happened in the past 6 months, but there is a downside, they are just adding India at the end of the names eg. BC....India.in etc., Soft...India.in etc which is readily available and they do not acquire names as a policy but block sites of potential cyber squatters who attempt to use Govt based names who will ultimately give in by dropping their names. They take any site or name complaints seriously like new released movie downloads etc., and immediately block or penalize etc.,

2) It's not about budget, private companies are now following the reverse trend, most of them already hold the dot in and dot co.in are now having the money to go for dot com as their business model is expanding globally. I know lot's of my friends invested xxxx in dot com's recently to re-brand their company and again they are not adding India at the end of their names if it is a dot com since its a global commerce name.

3) I was holding about 60 good names 3 letter/4 letters dot in's and dot co.in's for 3 years and then gave-up renewals but now things are better and as others opinionated the good names today might sell in the 300-500$ value. but might possibly go up to 500-700 in the next 2 years as more localized business are going online and with the scarcity of dot com's or where their customers are purely localized they might even prefer a hindi slag words in dot in's.

4) Most individuals and companies in India mostly look for alternative names if they find their names are already taken.

5) The trends of Indian entrepreneurs brainstorming and coming up their own fresh Ideas and Names like Zomato is more rampant and the trend to buy from after market is low unless its an exact match to their company.

Thanks.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but.... Inbound inquiries from India are almost always low ball offers, even for .coms.
I haven't seen any solid evidence to say they are willing to spend on quality names, but if you have any reports of decent sales from india..I'd love to see.

I wouldn't give up on .in though...it will grow in time.

I own my name: Rory.in

valuable

Indians love to use .com
But .com is scarce and expensive so i dont believe .com is a practical viable option going forward, unless those INdians mostly opt for the worst .coms..

I respectfully suggest you sell off/flip/drop/gift most of these names. Cheaper alternatives to stock up on:
1) Patterned LLLL.in
2)NNN.co.in(I strongly believe these are currently underpriced, but will go up in value due to their extremely short supply)
3)LLL.co.in(buy the best/better ones; they are not great , but they are as good or better than most of what you have here)
4) NNNN.in - also underrated and likely to increase in value in the near future.

Cheers!

Great and honest thread. I think one fundamental issue here is India GDP per capita. Once this increases two/three fold (give it 3-5 years), I think we will see a boom in genuine demand from India due to the increase in disposable income.

Domain hacks will continue to generate demand in Western markets but until we see a concerted growth in domestic .IN demand from India, we will continue to be in a highly speculative state. Sure, there are huge businesses forming in India who will need a name, but for large organic growth in the .IN market you will need local resellers on board too. Local businesses, speculators, domainers/resellers will be important in pushing the appeal and visibility of the domain extension.

That is not to say the role of local start ups/businesses will be important- of course they will. But sheer volume dictates that a key driver in this market will be GDP per capita
