Hi,

So I have a domain in uixon.com that is showing a value of $2.6 million on free valuator. I know by reading threads that primarily isn't or shouldnt be the only method of appraising my domain. I have not only asked around some brokers but also posted it on here (which I will delete if Its considered a rule break of any kind)

People I have talked to have pretty much told me it's not worth much of any. I get it it's not easily pronouncable. Doing research on Google not much of the word. I know it is a name of some kind. Name not used very often. Couldn't find origin and also seems to be a company that is no longer running or selling.

It has backlinks showing 29,000 on latest backlink check if that matters. Godaddy values it $1,400 and estibot at around $180. It is a 5 Letter .com. I want to say 5 Letter word as it's been used but not a popular keyword or used keyword on google rarely at all. Any help would be great!

It has no real value unless there is commercial application for the domain name. IE a company, service, product or something that wants it.

Other than that it is obscure and regardless of the valuation all it will be worth to you is a drain on your pocketbook in the form of a renewal fee every year.

Do the research, find out if there are some matches and base your decision to drop or keep on that.

I wonder if replies to this thread would be different if title did not start with appraisal?

E.g. "5 letter .com used for 13 years with tens of thousands of backlinks. Starts with UI (user interface) and ends with xon. Decent Moz score. Brandable? Help me evaluate."

@Bob Hawkes I could have titled it better but nothing close to that of course as a newbie.

I appreciate everyone's feedback regardless. When I mean data, actual reason why it's worthless. I have yet to hear response to bobs "ui" use to the name. That's fine you don't have to.

I wasn't really meaning all of that should be in title, but it seems to me when any mention is made of appraisals some react negatively without digging deeper.

If you have not already you should use the Archive Wayback machine to look at past use of the domain. I used Domain Tools to look at length and number hosts but did not actually explore the past use.

I would also try to come up with as many possible uses of name as possible, even if some are stretches. Here are a few off top of my head...
  • UI user interface (consultants, web developers, product designers, app developers, consumer product design, etc. Long list)
  • UI as in you and I (similar idea to ICU extension)
  • This might just be me, but UIX struck me as possible brandable contraction of Unix, so lots of programmers, analysts etc.
  • XON is the stock symbol of a growing and important biotech company (they dominate list if you Google term). Not sure if any way to relate to that.
  • UI is shorthand for uninterruptable. Maybe branding on that for backup power systems.
I have not searched acronym lists for UI and UIX but you should. If you can find a good UIX meaning the on is a nice suffix.

Many experienced and wise people have commented that it has little or no value. They are more experienced than me and may well be right.

I would not abandon it without doing full research though. 5 letter com with tons of backlinks and decent Moz are not usually without value. I agree that speakable/spellable is a challenge although not impossible.

The very best of luck with it! I think it is just $1 to have it evaluated at BrandBucket, would be one approach to getting expert idea re brandability (if you do list with them have to be exclusive).

Bob

PS this article I wrote on domain evaluation may be helpful.

... It has backlinks showing 29,000 on latest backlink check if that matters. ...
It would matter if they were real and productive, if they were we’d see heavyweight referrals on page 1 of a google search of “uixon.com” but what we actually see is a lot of namepros chit chat and exactly zero useful links.
I have yet to hear response to bobs "ui" use to the name.
The ‘ui’ front end isn’t magic. The ground is littered with ui***.com names that can be hand registered for $10.
The name is short and dot com, both good attributes.
Net and org aren’t taken - not encouraging.
wholesale: $x
retail: $xxxx
advice: turn auto renew off, good luck!

Sage advice from @ecalc. Thank you.

The point of similar names available to hand register is critical. If unfamiliar with it @John Paglione my favourite tool is lean domain search. If I search for domain names starting with UIX (user interface and experience) @ecalc is right that several equally good or better come up such as uixex and uixly. I think following link should show them then arrange by length.

https://leandomainsearch.com/search/?q=Uix

This does not necessarily mean the name will not sell retail but it does mean wholesale price is very low as he indicated.

Thanks @ecalc for the feedback and giving me better context on that. Thank you as well @Bob Hawkes. I appreciate everyone's response. I 'll use the tools given and go from there. Hopefully if I have any questions I could message you guys. If not, thank you for your responses and advice.

I would have bought the name as well.

The .ru extension is established and the site looks good. Shows how someone can brand it.

I'd set it up with a $2,450-$3,450 price.

The goal is to learn how to value domains precisely and with that, i understand it takes time. Im willing to put in work to learn this skill.
Precisely, a bot is not going to teach you anything. You punch in a name, you get a figure that will be different the next day and across other sites. The methodology is not even open source. So what exactly did you learn by using a black box ? Nothing.
Appraising is more art than science and it takes experience, which is why newcomers usually waste a lot of money on handregs that nobody wants.

There is one thing you need to understand: end users don't buy domains because they have nice appraisals. There has to be a need or a want for your domain in the first place. The automated appraisals are for entertainment or ego boosting. They are also offered by by some registrars for obvious reasons: so that you buy more domains from them. After all, anything will be appraised above regfee.

To a large extent, the domain industry thrives on dreams and delusion.

Thanks @Kate. I understand appraisals sites is not the sole determining factor of a domain. I know there is more metrics and variables that constitute a valuable domain. I also understand, even on namepros, domain auction sites have appraisals on a lot of listings. If it is a useless tool why are people using it in their listings?

I really dont want people thinking i Steve Wonder'd a keyboard and made this domain up. I go on a website called expireddomains.net. I spent $8 for 8 domains. My other domains have keywords or may have a need but I realized on this site characters like hyphens may not be as valuable. So a domain like cell-reset.com may not be as valuable. I joined namepros to network with other pros. I know my place. I'm here to learn, even if it means look like a newbie dipstick in the beginning.

User Interface - is hot topic in today's tech like touchscreen, bio-metric etc., AND software flow control is called "XON/XOFF flow control. Both combined makes a superb combination for entrepreneurs. good luck.

At 2.6 million you could pay for an appraisal from freevaluator. Once you have spent the value on that appraisal you can rest as life will be easy for you from now on as you won't be so gullable. I wish I had an appraisal like that so i could swap it with someone with a 1k appraisal on a domain that I like.

Always do your due diligence
1. all valuations aren't equal/correct
2. do your market research
3. set up a website with automated info and get it ranking
4. post your own content once in a while
5. start earning and selling

It's not EMD or 1 word domain. It may have some value if someone wants to use it as his/her brand or abbreviation of something. I hope you can find someone interested. But the odds don't seem high to me.

Hey, according to free valuator we are all millionaires and just for $2,49 you can have a decent wall picture to prove it :)

Also checked the backlinks for you. Seemed to be spam and they're removed now anyway:

The above is showing where this one backlink comes from.

Checked with ahrefs, except majestic, one and maybe also the best backlink tool on the market.

A few things to note here ...

First of all .. your domain definitely is not entirely worthless in the sense that IF someone ever wants it, they will most certainly be willing to pay more than handreg pricing. UI is a common abbreviation. However XON is a technical term, not really used outside of it's technical scope and more importantly rarely in marketing/branding (simply because the general population doesn't really know anything about it). So any buyer on that front would be limited to a very small and specific sub-niche .. and even within that only a B2B business .. definitely not a large enough potential pool to justify holding as a domainer, simply because even if a potential buyer would spend $1000 .. the chances of there actually being a potential buyer are significantly less than the chances/costs ratio a domainer who needs to pay renewals/costs/etc.

In my opinion ..UI or UX would only work with very strong common/generic adjectives .. like AmazingUI or UIGenie or UXWiz.

Also .. the fact that an automated evaluator sees significantly higher value than the average domain is itself USUALLY a clue to search for further value. I never use an automated bot to get a sure and tangible value. But I most definitely put all my potential domain buys through Estibot for the stats and even for the actual value it spits out. But all I take from that is that if it is above what I expect then it pushes me to look around for the actual reason (either pure stats or other info you can find simply from googleing). Conversely, if it spits out a $0 value then it helps with finding typos that I missed or missing/mixed up letters.

All that said .. seven figures for uixon is beyond ludicrous. The only thing that tells me is that FreeEvaluator is complete garbage. The fact that other 5L domain posted above is also evaluated ultra hi tells me there is likely fundamentally bad logic in their actual valuation algorithm .. likely a multiplication instead of a division somewhere. Or just as likely .. they don't really have good data to pull from. Or another possibility is that they just don't understand domain valuations. Or maybe they do that deliberately so that you'll spend a couple of dollars to get their certified appraisal.

Otherwise, particularly with Estibot .. don't completely dismiss automated evaluation .. but take them with a grain of salt .. use them more to compare with other domains .. use them for the great amount of stats they give you .. and most importantly .. make sure they are only one of many parts of your domain evaluation. Far and away the most important question that needs to be asked before buying a domain is:

1) Will anybody ever want to use it?
... and then even more importantly ...
2) Will anyone ever need to use it so much so as to pay a domainer's markup instead of just looking for a cheaper alternative?

In the end, the biggest flaw with all automated valuations is that quite often the number they spit out is indeed relatively accurate *IF* the domain sells ... but one key factor overlooked is probability of sale which is equally important a factor in determining it's worth to you as a domain investor!

Sometimes our worst domains sell at higher prices than we ever expect while our best domains remain unsold .. at the end of the day all it takes is one buyer .. I unfortunately don't see it happening here .. but you never know .. lol .. Best of luck with it all the same! :)
