Hi Forum

I am a lateral thinker and enjoy trawling the web on any and all subjects. The lack of a niche filter means a portfolio of domains can soon be amassed. Just scanning the first 5-6 names suggests I'm all over the place. Any suggestions on how to narrow the portfolio to a core few for the long game?

Ouch .. I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news .. but you really aren't likely to get much action out of this portfolio. I'm really trying to find any that I would have bought even at $5 closeout and didn't find anything I'm sorry to say. A couple of the ones that caught my eye were PhantomRouter and PristineExtract, but even those aren't all that promising in my opinion.

In terms of the nTLD's custombuild.homes and anime.school are two that could have a bit of potential down the road if they are not premium renewals .. but again, unless they were very cheap, I would not have bought them myself.

I do don't really have a niche .. and while I most certainly do think it's best to focus on what you know, google can help out a lot when learning about something outside your usual areas of knowledge. That being said, I simply do not see demand for just about every name in the list. You need to ask yourself if a business would call themselves by any of them .. or even really use any of them for marketing purposes? Unfortunately the answer is no pretty much all the way down the list! :(

There's always a bit of luck in domaining, so hopefully you'll get some action .. but I don't really see it.

Are these hand registrations? Where did you get them?

Best of luck to you with them ...

Focus on a niche you are familiar with
Focus on getting the best names in that niche
Focus on getting the best .COM names in that niche
Shorter is better in domains, most of the time anyway
Dont mix numbers and letters
Stay away from hyphens

Stay away from strange or weak extension like org, xyz, homes, center, live, irish, network, bike, city etc etc

Get 10 names or less and then try and sell a few, dont get caught up in the registration frenzy like you have, that is far too may names for someone new to the industry. If you make one sale of $1000, that profit is gone with all the renewals of those names, keep your portfolio small and try get some sales first and then reinvest that money into new names, then you are playing a low risk game.

To be honest, most of those names will end up expiring as you will struggle to sell them, I would not renew them when the times comes. Cut your losses now, learn from it and research a certain niche you are familiar with.

Dont try and hand-register names in your selected niche because the chances are the good names will be gone already. Email the existing owners and try and negotiate a bargain, even if you pay slightly more, you are better off paying $200 or $500 for 2 or 3 good names that will be easier to sell, rather than 100 crap names that wont ever sell. Quality of Quantity is the key to this game.

Hope that helps, good luck

Thanks for the detailed responses, so far. I has pick through and highlighted in a wine colour and a larger font 12 names that might make the grade as business name or common emotive leanings.

surelock.homes I have seen many google images of independent locksmiths with a surelock.homes decal on the side of a work van.

Alternatively, legpainrelief.com given an ageing population seems the keyword funnel to a company's medicinal line

a list of subpar names, does not qualify as a portfolio

to me, looks like you were following the crowd and their hype

then started regging anything, just to have something to show and solicit.

sometimes, it's good to get left behind
then you get to see, what wasn't worth it anyway

i've dropped :poop: names this year too
so don't be afraid to let em go and start over

imo...

First off I admire your willingness to post your " domaining life " for all to read and comment on.

As I peruse your list I can see several names that appear well reasoned for purchase although perhaps circling their perspective marketplaces.

Might suggest you choose one or two niche markets and try to obtain credible and presumably desirable domains in the top extension ( the revered com, poss a couple other ext ?) and stick to a domain disciplined plan.

Read and re-read everything you can find in the selected niche marketplaces including confirmed sales and try to acquire comparable names.

IMO a couple dozen focused and well informed niche domain purchases are likely more efficient and likely more economical - profitable over the years than a vast array of unrelated names in a vast variety of extensions.

Thanks to @WatchDogue who has picked up on my mindset even if my mind is not settled
my handreg's "perhaps circling their perspective marketplaces" Not being armed with a war chest of funds and with most investment grade word combinations gone, there appears little to do , except play at the fringes. My list of name are the result of this.

Any salvageable ones? 50 of the names are at undeveloped see signature line. If I was looking to generate my first $500-800 in total which ones might get me close to a reset chance.

I put the names I thought had the most promise into GoDaddy's Valuation tool ... and only one of them broke the $2,000 mark - commoditiesgold.com. Most every other .com was $1200 or so ... which in the GoDaddy Valuation world means its not even worth renewing. If you have another over $2,000, keep it. All others can be dropped. Doesn't mean one won't sell as at least you have each domain forwarding to a lander so you might get a few offers. Good luck!

I would not follow that metric. I have domains that come in under $1200 and get offers over that price. Likewise I see domains rating $4000+ that probably would never sell for $500.

I think that some diversification in types of domains is healthy, and having some from multiple areas is not necessarily bad. We should invest in niches we know and be conscious of quality over quantity, but beyond that would not be overly worried about narrowing focus. As Michael Cyger reminded us at NamesCon, we all should critically evaluate our holdings at least once a year.

It is true that if one has a market (Efty, Undeveloped, own web, etc.) it does look better when the focus is clear, but I don't think that is a significant consideration.

The very best wishes for success in domain investing.

legpainrelief is not bad... I'd hang onto that.

- Focus on a particular tld. Specifically focus on .com because you're wasting your money on new gtlds and xyzs and what have you.
- Focus on buying names within a certain length (under 12 characters)
- Focus on real, correctly spelled words.. you were so close with endorsable.com but its spelled wrong.

More importantly... focus on talking yourself out buying a name. Instead of stretching for reasons to buy a name, talk yourself out of buying it. Ask yourself would someone really build a business on this domain name? Do the words get any type of search volume? No? Then don't buy it.

For example... fruitray. First, it's spelled wrong. But even if you have FruitTray ... who's going to build a business with that name? Not many people. Probably no one if we're being honest. A name like BigFruit, sure. But not yours.

(I did a search for fruitray and saw you have it on Brandpa... which is sad, because Brandpa gives people a lot of false hope because they'll accept anything. They got people thinking bad domains are worth $2k...)

Another example... emeraldwisp. Search google for that. 656 results. It means nothing and it's not used in common culture or language. When I search a name, I look for at least 100k results.

Thanks again I am seriously going to print out snippets and prop them on my keyboard

The thinking with fruitray.com (Fruit Ray) was something that aligns with this idea

A few .com names I thought were reasonably thought out included some of your robot names and the leg pain relief ( as I'm all too familiar with the concept).

A few of your .bike and .homes names were reasonable phrases although, the likely constraints of the extensions may play a role in their respective values and buyer pools.

Many serious domain sellers know decent names may need to be held for years to get one serious offer or " the right " BIN buyer to come along.

I am going to leave a few opinions since you were kind enough to share. I have not analyzed any of these deeply, some of the niches I don't know, and well I am still learning and often wrong! So with those caveats....

Here are some that appealed to me particularly.

Nanotel.co really nice ring, might fit with a startup in internet of nanoscale things.

Quic.bet is short and cute, might get picked up.

PrintCopy.centre is good in my opinion.

As is CustomBuilt.homes

Oases.city is very nice. Elegant with numerous retail and restaurant options.

Market for anime.school is limited but nice descriptive name.

SureLock.homes is a cute play on words. Has potential.

You have some names that I like but I think might be hard to sell. I have numerous names personally I would say same about. Suggest pricing within range of nonprofits and bloggers. Examples uncertain.world, truly.one, thirdly.xyz.

I am not too enthusiastic on most of the coms. My favourite from them possibly PromFinest.

Best wishes for success.

Bob

Thanks Bob

for the helpful scan of names, seems I have no problem with descriptive or diversification , just due diligence

The thinking with fruitray.com (Fruit Ray) was something that aligns with this idea

And therein lies the problem -- if you have to explain to us or anyone else what your thinking is on any domain name, it's a bad domain name. Good domain names are intuitive and simply make sense to anyone as to why a CEO or CMO at a large, global corporation would want to own the domain name at some point in the future. Good domain names sell themselves!

Drop all names. No point asking about advanced topics when the basics are so wrong.

I must have missed this first time fruitxray.com is available Fear not posters I'm not going to reg

So my take is this.

If you paid an average of $5 per domain you listed, you could have bought one really decent domain. One domain would have been much easier to manage all the way around.

Check out Namebio and you'll see that some really good names are selling in the aftermarket for $XXX with potential to resell for $XXXX.

Take your time. There are so many strings and word combinations available for hand registration, anyone would go broke trying to register them all.

Have fun.

I don't agree with quite everything in your longer post @barman but this insight is brilliant! You have encapsulated perfectly an idea that will help us all be better domainers. Thank you!

fruitray.com or hyperspectral-imaging-applications like i state in my intro just a bit too lateral for my own good

It is so easy to be come 'over imaginative' when coming up with domains. Then we convince ourselves that it is lateral or creative thinking that somebody will latch onto. The truth is, Yes one-day someone may just contact you for a particular domain But, the cost of your renewals wipes that single sale out in a second. I've been there.. 100 invents becomes 200 becomes 500 and so on. There's nothing worse than having to bring in $20,000 a year just to break even
This is from a guy with $300,000 plus of sales, Profit +/- No I don't even want to calculate. Don't let your imagination run away with you. You may think the wording is clever but, that doesn't make it memorable. If a domain requires 'Reading' it's already wrong, word recognition is key, in inventive pairs. Having a dot in-between wording just sews confusion unless it is so clever or has a massive promotional budget, they will break your bank

I like npr.info. Others, I'm not sure. I think if you drop all the rest you wouldn't lose much, considering multi year renewal costs.
