Coin toss over and they go to a commercial. The first ad I see is YoutubeTV but no domain mentioned - assumed to be .com?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The thing about marketing research is that it is not exact science. All researchers agree the earth is round, but not all marketing researchers will agree on the importance of a domain.

I will stick to what brought me to domaining. Domain's are just an address, but it is the only address where you can completely control the message. No amount of research will change that.

Our world, my message, my domain.

Yes, it is an important message that you have clearly expressed @Internet.Domains and I totally agree.

in many ways living in a world that is content heavy, successful companies will be those that effectively control their message. Using a set of good domain names effectively can help do that, as you say.

I don't know about that, and I think it really comes down to a battle for the budget, where the company allocates their available funds, and who has the power.

No one disputes a perfect, brandable domain name on .COM has intrinsic value, it's when the price tag comes in at $500K that we have a problem, as then marketing's budget suddenly explodes and they become the big fish in in the corporate pond. Then they get a big project budget for a rebrand to a shorter .COM, are sending out big press releases, giving interviews, going on junkets, signing new spokespeople, designing updated commercials, etc.

That same domain costs $10 with minimal development costs, limited PR and no real impact on the company, and we don't have a problem.

Of course the main problem with the SuperBowl was not the ads, or even lack of domain mention, but who won the game :xf.grin:. I fear this might get some dislikes from Patriot fans though!

I, myself would like the url to be used but it's most likely what's already been mentioned by multiple people in this thread. People already know it's the .com, the link I just posted about keeping the attention, probably some other things. It wasn't just 1 company doing this, it seemed like most. There has to be a reason for it. It would be interesting to take a look at some of the internal research on it.

It's also interesting to take a look at the evolution of the ads in just a short time. In regards to use of social media, presentation of the url.

With social media, just a few years ago it seemed like everybody was pushing their social media, FB, Twitter, etc. I always thought that was a bad idea simply because companies go out of business, fall out of favor, have other issues. Just look at the hammering FB is taking for data/privacy issues. Take them to your site, link to social media from there.

Presentation of the url. If you look at the beginning of the internet, it goes something like:
http://www.something.com
www.something.com
something.com or no url - where we're at today.

I don't think this has anything to do with the importance of the url, I take an alternate view on that. It just shows how ingrained, how strong it is with the pubic. People already know.

Understood. Although, by not showing a domain, the only thing "engrained" is the use of Google.

That's why I originally mentioned the winner is Google.

I used my Matrix powers in the wrong manner, as my mantra that day was "Please, don't let Tom Brady win another meaningless 'just give it to the QB' Super Bowl MVP Award."

Ooops.

I imagine that's something they considered. If I type hyundai, I can choose the best option that suits me. Be it the main site or a local site. The search for stuff is negligible. In Bing/Yahoo, you don't even see the other ones.

In past, we have seen domains, then we saw social media handles, now we see nothing.

My opinion, we will see them going back to showing domains.

It's an interesting subject, no doubt. Only time will tell.

They're marketing their own brand. So where ever you go to look, they'll come up first. ..

A smart competitor would have purchased the top ad spot and save a lot of money.

You might want to read up on past cases. Depends how you do it. Company will own natural SERPS.

As an example, pick one from last night where you see competitor showing up.

The main reason they kept away from US/English domain names is the incredible global appeal of the Super Bowl, especially the US commercials, which are replayed on International TV, shown on Youtube, put in compilations, etc.

For international audiences, BRAND is everything, and they want to pound "HYUNDIA" or AUDI" in your head, then you can just "Google it" without getting sent to the wrong domain.

In a case like this, it's all about promoting your brand worldwide, whereby with a more local commercial series for North American telecasts of something like This is Us or Modern Family, then an English .COM domain would be a better marketing tool.

No matter how you slice it when you see megacorps not being concerned about domains shows how much influence Google' is having on the marketing departments in these large companies. Every day whether we like it or not domains are becoming less and less important when directly targeting a certain market of consumers. Large corps will always want their main brand domain but are less concerned with brand messaging using a domain. They know right now that it's social media overload with facebook, twitter, instagram etc...and their message will be found regardless of where you put the front door.

My wife was watching the recording of the game just for the ads tonight, and I noticed that at the end of the Kia add it gave the web address TheGreatUnknown.org. When I go there it is simply a site with links for songs/lyrics. Am I missing something? Or is it like a credit? Not even a secure page. With so few domains listed, seems unusual.

Plural - https://www.thegreatunknowns.org/

For - thegreatunknown.org I'm actually seeing:

thegreatunknown.org
This page is parked free, courtesy of Media Temple

That's Chrome have ads blocked there, in FF where I don't, I see Related links, one being to lyrics.

All those SB ads type of companies with multi-million ad budgets have a bit of different goals there than spend $1 convert into $1+ traceable income.

I am BMW guy, for example. I know their website in the US is bmwusa.com and I know my dealership website is BMWwest.com

And even if I don't know the website, googling it will provide only results relevant to them, so no risk of leaking traffic. And no need to distract people from the message of the ad. SB ads are the best when they pretend they are not trying to sell anything.

I don't need to see that in the ad. But BMW might still need advertising just to remind about itself, change a bit its message and associations or reinforce it, announce new product or change of a design or just make a feel good ad to strengthen loyalty. None of this have to convert into another sale right away. Enough that next time I am getting newer car, I remember about BMW first. Now BMW probably was not in this SB and it is just an example. Just replace it with Audi, Ford, Harley or whatever rocks your boat.
