There's a domain I'm interested in. Depending which whois service I use, I get different data:

ICANN
Updated Date: 2018-07-12
Created Date: 2018-05-12
Registry Expiry Date: 2019-05-12

Whois.net
Updated Date: 2018-01-30
Creation Date: 2007-02-13
Registry Expiry Date: 2019-02-13

Godaddy / Namecheap
Updated Date: 2019-01-29
Creation Date: 2007-02-13
Registry Expiry Date: 2020-02-13

What causes this?

Godaddy seems to have the latest data, but the others claim they do too. I assume ICANN is including the three month grace period, hence the disparity?

It's kinda all over the place.

If am to chose I will go with godaddy and namecheap they are more authority than whois.net but where icann gets their data is what I don't know.

Parent .com WHOIS is powered by Verisign.
All others don't have any value.

If the domain is registered at GoDaddy - then Yes, you may check it on their website to retrieve Registrant details from GoDaddy local DB.

And on Linux - just whois example.tld in terminal.
The direct and shortest way.

Hmm?

I have all .coms registered at namecheap and dynadot, with privacy off but the verisign whois link only displays the following results, but NO Registrant, Admin, or Tech contact info, which I do see at https://www.namecheap.com/domains/whois/results.aspx and https://www.dynadot.com/domain/whois.html

Domain Name:
Registry Domain ID:
Registrar WHOIS Server:
Registrar URL:
Updated Date:
Creation Date:
Registry Expiry Date:
Registrar:
Registrar
Registrar Abuse Contact Email:
Registrar Abuse Contact Phone:
Domain Status: clientTransferProhibited https://icann.org/epp#clientTransferProhibited
Name Server:

DNSSEC: unsigned
URL of the ICANN Whois Inaccuracy Complaint Form: https://www.icann.org/wicf/

registrar's sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is
currently set to expire....

Because Verisign doesn't store any private data, they manage Parent WHOIS.
Contact data is recorded by Registrars in their Local WHOIS DB.

Privacy is managed at Registrar level.
It has no any relations to Verisign (Root level).

My bad, that’s what I meant...Even with privacy turned off, at registrar, Verisign won’t display contact info?

Yes, Verisign WHOIS is responsible ONLY for DATES/STATUSES/Registrar fields...
Reg/Admin/Tech/Billing details are managed by Registrar.

Thanks!
Is there a “go to” Whois that displays Reg/Admin/Tech/Billing details, managed by registrars or you just have to visit each individual registrar Whois, where a domain is registered, to view?

I already answered above:

It shows both Parent (Verisign) and Registrar WHOISes.

OR visit registrar where a domain is registered.

It means a lookup using command line on Linux (whois package must be installed).

Video (not mine):

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to explain and post that video. I’ll have to stick with visiting registrar, where a domain is registered, for now. 😔
