Read alot. Set the "recent sales" thread as a watched thread, also watch threads to do with things like Afternic, Undeveloped and branding sites. Keep an eye on trends. Dont buy domains unless you have done some research or have valid reasons to buy them.

Learn as " much as possible " regarding those interests and be patient and judicious in name acquisitions.

The most important thing to do before spending too much is to learn as much as possible. What most newcomers might think make s agood domain investment, more often than not turns out to be worthless .. so definitely take some time to read the tons of information all over this forum .. also check out the various podcasts out there .. also feel free to follow my blog/lists here and at NameCult (all links in my signature).
