Namesilo auctions really annoy me

NameSilo
Watch
Im just going to have a little rant, and im sure theres many other people on here with the same gripe with namesilos expired auctions.

Numerous times have i been the maximum bidder on a domain for what feels like a very long time, usually 25 days from when i make the bid and then the bloody owner decides to renew the domain in like the last 30 minutes.

Why are they allowed to do that

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The better question is why are auctions happening while in grace period. I don’t even bother til the last day over there. The dropping owners are watching apparently.

this is the reason i left namesilo...
i saw alot of owners saying that they are enjoying the bid on names and then they renew name in last minutes... so domain owners having fun there...
but truth is sometimes you can get great names there...

Because there are only 24 hours in a day (and also because I find great closeouts) I pretty much only do GoDaddy Auctions .. so maybe there is something technically different at NameSilo I'm not aware of, but otherwise the biggest question is .. why do you bid so far in advance?

If you want to reduce the chance of the former owner renewing, then don't bid until a few minutes before the end of an auction.

That being said .. I'm pretty guilty of waiting until the last minute to renew/transfer .. nothing to do with whether a domain has bids or not .. and only a factor of the fact I'm a pretty bad procrastinator! lol

It’s the same deal at Dynadot ,sometimes I will check Whois and see the name has been renewed yet some people don’t think to do that so they keep bidding and ultimately the winner pays to then receive an email saying the name has been renewed and money is credited back to the account of the winner .Usually Dynadot has a minimum amount before you can request a refund to your paypal or cc etc however in this case you can ask for a refund even if it falls below their set amount.Though very rare I have also seen this at GD however they do not continue trying to auction a renewed name like Dynadot does ....they simply remove the name from auction ,it’s still in the list but If you try to bid a screen comes up saying the name has been removed from auction .....personally I feel that no company should be auctioning names that are still in an expired grace period it benefits nobody and is a complete waste of time to those that are bidding on a name. But that’s how it is and though it is complete BS we as domainers have to go with the flow and make the best of it .....my advice don’t celebrate a winning bid until the name is secure in your account much the same as you shouldn’t celebrate a sale until the money is in your account. Even if the domain is in your account there is a potential however low for a clawback by the original owner willing to pay the penalty. I agree don’t get attached. What these registrars could stand to improve is what date the auctions end. It should be into the more expensive clawback period instead of still normal price period.

NameSilo starts that auction just a few days after the expiration date. You should almost assume it may be renewed if you bid that early.

The reason i bid so far in advance is because namesilo have a maximum bid amount and if im not quick other bidders get in there first, then im unable to bid because the maximim amount has been reached.

I stopped using godaddy expired auctions because even the shittiest of names sell for stupid money.

What's worse is when you've already "won" the now-ended auction, only for the owner to then be somehow allowed to immediately renew - then you're met with an offer page asking for $$$$ minimum bids on domains you just won for $/low $$. My last 3 winning auctions have ended like this..

Since they have moved to the format where any expiring auction can get bids until the last second, I have essentially stopped using it. The issue is more of a time zone issue. The auctions all end at 1am in the morning for me. I sleep bad, have insomnia, have 2 young kids that wake up a lot, I only sleep 2-3 hours some nights, and wake up super early. Yet, somehow, I am typically asleep when these auctions expire.

I bid on an expiring domain yesterday. With 2 minutes left in the auction, I got outbid. If I'm awake and watching the auction, I'd be fine with that. But, I sleep so little and treasure the sleep I get. Im not going to stay up every night to make sure my auctions aren't sniped.

I do not like when the auctions changed to this format. I feel like it's only a matter of time when HugeDomains will start winning all the good names (if they haven't already).

Since they have changed to this format, I have a suggestion. Have each expiring domain auction end on a varying hour... like the 30 days to the hour that they actually expired. Can you do that @namesilo?

this truth, this just happened to me. i think owner enjoying the bid because 2 hours of bidding, even though the bidding should end sooner. When I won, I got an email notification that the owner was renewing the domain.

@namesilo
If you are not sure the domain will be renewed, don't put it in the auction! stup*d policy

Wow .. I only checked them out for a couple of days (not particularly impressed with the inventory quality nor of their platform, don't see myself bothering going forward).

I was following that one in question (there was only one left after 1:30am pacific so not hard to figure out).

I see in my emails that at 1:46am I got two emails:

1- A new bid has been placed for the domain.
2- The domain has been renewed so the sale has ended.

Seems they should at least end the possibilities of renewals by 11:54pm .. before that I can understand they want the original owners to be able to renew, but after that it's something easily abused.

Did you win/receive any of the other 3 previously ending auctions? I was bidding on 2 of them for a bit (not that last one)

Until a few months ago you were able to make a last minute bid which gave youba chance on winning a good name. But namesilo made some changes. When you place a bid when the auction is almost over, they add extra time AND they inform the original owner and to all other bidders who had placed a (lower) on the domainname.
This way its not possible anymore to get a name for a very good price. No more fun to use namesilo auctions, i stay away from it.

I'm sure they are making a lot more money since the change. It was a smart business move.
I don't like it. I hate it, actually. I liked the older method better. I rarely browse their inventory now.

Requiring a deposit for your bid upfront is a bit annoying as well.
