iSmartLaw.com was the name I was discussing when this hit me!

I will say this, conceding it does not add ANY INHERENT value to a name like iSmartLaw.com, this is a name I like and think enough of it that renewing it for $10 a year for a decade does NOT worry me. After all, it is ONLY $100 . . . where else could $110 be invested and offer a potential XXXX return? I started writing this thinking one thing, but buckle up fellas and ladies:) we are going on a ride! *Math is NOT perfect . . .lets roll with it. Yes I did original hand reg as 10 and then renewed it a decade which is 11 years not 10 . . . humor me!

I love @toughdomains so they get a shoutout . . . they are making this possible with their landing place and global market place.

These are the last names I have registered, and a block of them were on the same day, so that’s why I’ve included them all. 21 DOMAINS, TWENTY-ONE DOMAINS THERE. Remember this is a conversation. Feel free to agree or disagree . . . just explain your rationale . . . please! $110 per domain for 10 years and I realize they aren’t all dot com . . . 21 names x $110 equals $2310.

I will deduct $100 from $2310 to cover the decade long renewal. Can I buy a name for $2210 today that will be worth at least$2310 in a decade?

Smart Tint is a thing . . . seemingly young to the marketplace. I was thinking about those shirts back in the 80s that changed colors when heat touched the shirt. I remember my arm pits always being the other color, lol. Why can’t window tint be smart? It can! Buildings, homes, cars, and everywhere that there are windows they could use smart tint. How nice would it be to adjust your windows according to heat and sun brightness? Even in your car? Tinge means the same thing as tint. Tinge currently is not nearly as good as tint. Tinge as a related aside, does have that feel of a pinch, like let me get a pinch of that chew or a pinch of the cash or a pinch of ham . . . which is fine by me because it flows with tinge.

HighgravityBeer is a category of beer. It is like Pale Ale, Lager, Stout, Indian Pale Ale . . . ETC; With all of the micro breweries in the US alone I will outbound this one. There are problems with it . . . I would walk into a bar and ask if they had any high gravity beers on top or in bottles. I would walk in and ask them what lagers they had. I would ask if they had any Stout Beers. Any IPAs as well. I do not see this name as brandable realistically. To brand HighGravityBeer all their beers would have to be HighGravity, meaning higher percentages of alcohol. SweetWaterBrewery is an example, locally, that has high gravity beer . . . but they have light beer and all others as well. I suppose someone way smarter than me could make marijuana/cannabis/thc beer, and high gravity beer might work for them . . .

Refinance.Directory- Finance.Directory was gone. I dropped refinancing directory. Funny thing to me is this: Refi.Directory sounds better than Refinance.Directory, but I don’t think it works here!

vArraignment.com- Speculating a lot here. I know that they have closed circuit rooms for the most unruly that are being arraigned. Arraignment dot com was gone! Could virtual arraignments be a thing of the future? I suppose closed circuit could have been video arraignment . . .

MobileSecurity.Group- I had a lot of ideas with this . . . cellphone security was first, then anything that moves like a car moto, camper, etc. I also think it could be a mobile arms dealer! A security group that is mobile and comes to you, etc; Mobile Security Market to Report Impressive Growth, Revenue To Surge To US$ 46.74 billion by 2023

vScrapbook.com, vScrapbookAlbums.com, VirtualScrapbookAlbums.com, vScrapbooks.com scrapbooking is a thing. 2.5B industry. Virtual scrapbooking is a thing, lol. Let me add these names to make this a little block following the same train of thought . . .

iBlackLove.com, vBlackLove.com, VirtualBlackLove.com BlackLove is a big thing. I probably stretched too far with these names.

vBlackhole.com, vBlackArt.com, VirtualBlackArt.com I probably stretched too far here as well. I do like vBlackhole.com and would reg it again. Some guy named Steve Hawking wrote about it years ago . . . “The picture of virtual black holes given here also suggests that macroscopic black holes will evaporate down to the Planck size and then disappear in the sea of virtual black holes.” Here is the title of the text if curious . . . Virtual Black Holes S. W. Hawking Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics University of Cambridge. Some guy named . . . LOL

VirtualBlacklist.com, vBlacklist.com I like the v over the virtual here . . . What I gain with my English language command . . . of yes I did . . . I lose with pop culture . . . had no idea blacklist was a show. Lol. I still like the concept.

vPrivateServer.com virtual private server

Varkets.com- Like it for virtual markets.

NoHelpNoProblem.com Catchy Slogan and catch phrase. Long though.

Not to the bottom line . . . Can my list of 21 sell at all? Get to $2310 over the next decade?

What I can buy on namejet right now between $400-$2600 USD

Since domainers think our domains are great . . . Ill move range from to up to $10k and see what that looks like . . .

It did not filter correctly, but still shows a nice range:

Okay so I saw some names that looked like names I would have purchased or tried to register lol.

OOQ has a reserve of 10-25k, doubt $2310 gets it done. Id buy this for $2310.

DIGITALART.COM Currently is a grand basically. (BASICALLY GONNA BE USED OK FOLKS)

NAMETALK.COM IS 300 basically

RENEGE.COM ID PURCHASE FOR UP TO $2310 Don’t think that gets it done though.

Soybar.com only backorder now

DISRESPECT.COM Huge reserve

DIAGNOSED.COM 2500 basically

DAILYTOURS.COM HUGE RESERVE

RACINGSKATES.COM 250 basically

I didn’t really look at 4L bc I think those that are domainers like me want too much for them and investors decided what they would hold and dumped all others . . . basically!

So do my 21 names outdo the names Ive posted as possible? My 21 names aren’t against OOQ bc I cant buy OOQ for 2500 basically. Make sense?

Aftermaket names hands down

You can't get the same quality with handregs

I will sell 30 aftermarket names by the time I sell a handreg

tl;dr

Sorry, I tried.

But a lot of these domains do not look like high value to me. Some have little to no value.

Unfortunately, the number of views doesn't equate to the number of reads and in fairness your post is extremely long. (I haven't read it all myself)

Scanning through it does read like an exercise in self-justification for your registrations, which is always worth doing providing you can also be critical. So set about the same exercise, determined to be critical of your domains - It isn't easy but it can be done..this exercise has really helped me in the past.

I have to agree with Dr Jacorby, I'm sorry to say I don't like any of the 21.

I do understand your focus on V-Virtual but i'm not sure it really has much further commercial appeal. The same thing worked for me with touchscreen and the use of the word 'Touch' but I was 10 years ahead in my registrations, the technology hadn't even been invented (for mass commercial use) but, in 1999 I knew it was coming.

You seem to have tried to latch onto the the growth in the Virtual world with words that don't really pair well

This. I think most of the domains are not suitable for a business, or do not have an obvious practical purpose.
Esoteric domains are not going to sell.

What are you saying exactly ? You are going to renew these names for 10 years and spend 2K ? Don't do that. With 2K you could buy a few nice prerelease domains.

HighGravity.com killer name / HighGravityBeer.com reg fee name doesn't make sense. Steel Reserve is a high gravity malt beverage. Where do you find Steel Reserve? You'll find it at the end of a price set - it's a cheap beer. High gravity = more alcohol like malt liquor. MaltLiquorBeer.com? You can probably reg it right now - doesn't make sense. MaltLiquor.com - killer name. Adding Beer to these hurts the name, doesn't help.

you dont see value in aftermarket sales but they are selling and dont matter how much you think your hand regs are great but they arent selling. Look at this way, when someone opens a shop, and notices some items doing great which he doesnt like personally while his likeable items arent selling. Now if he fills the inventory of the items he likes and ignores market trend, he will surely go bankrupt. In commerce you have to do what people like as in the end its the profit that matters.

I actually read the whole thread specially the justification part and as you are aware, this makes me the perfect candidate for the vacancy so I charge a mere $50 to do an excellent summary :-P

Actually you are incorrect in your first statement. I do see value there with the aftermarket. I do in fact purchase them from time to time. This thread was merely an exercise. A discussion. Some people always say hand regs suck! Well lets make some comparisons. I would then follow up, AND say given some names available at Namejet, for 2310 they look a whole lot stronger. I don't deny that at all! I do appreciate the dialogue.

@Want2learn so you have been with NP for almost 2 years.

You have bought a bunch of names, you had couple of sales. Overall, not the 10 year dreaming, over this period how much have you lost?

First, you have to get that you don't get it. You don't get what makes a good investment in domains. You don't get that people pay high $xxx to low $xx,xxx for names that can add value to their business, that they will be proud to name their company and that they cannot easily do a slight variation and reg for $9.

You don't get that very very very rarely 3 word names are investment grade, that adding "v" to word+word is almost never investment grade (can't think of any).

I bought r/a/i/l/y.com for around $400 in October 2018 and it was sold in under 3 months for $4,295 with zero effort, outbound etc. Now compare that name to everything you have bought.

6
•••
End users are generally reluctant to pay a premium price for a domain even when the domain is short, memorable, unique and .com. They will often add extra letters or a word or a number or a hyphen or use some alternative extension. so crappy names that cannot conceivably be used for any commercial enterprise are not worth registering or backordering and certainly not renewing for multiple years. The only domain in your list of 21 domains that I view as marginally worth renewing is iSmartLaw.com and even then I only view it as a speculative play with an upside of $xxx. A better approach is to reboot and start over. Best wishes.

A bad name does not become a good name by virtue of time.
So handregs don't become great names, just because they are aged.

7
•••
Ain’t that the truth I see dropping names that people kept going for years and years and wonder why? I am sure we all can admit there are some really bad aged domains too. No accounting for taste.

And @Want2learn this might be the longest post I have seen in recent times 😂

•••
I would agree with what OP @Recons.Com wrote above.

In addition, I honestly do not think this is going to be profitable venture for you, seeing the names. I would not renew them, as I believe renewing them would mean to send good money after bad money. Or I will tell it even more strongly (but pls do not take it personally): names you listed are waste of your money, imo.

If you want to actually make some nice money, do not handreg. There are some very talented people who can handred, but it is only very small group of domain investors. All others are not succesful with handregs. So take 100 - 200 USD and buy one or two good names here at Namepros, be it .com or new gTLD or ccTLD. When you have good name, you will know it, no need to ask fellow domain investors whether it will sell. You will simply know it.

Like most debates here at NamePros .. I feel like the base question is just wrong and misleading.

Two facts of domaining:

1- People can buy handreg domains and make a profit .. but most don't.
2- People can buy aftermarket domains and make a profit .. but most don't.

EACH and every single domain is different and thus it's hard and unfair to make comparisons based on how you bought them. Acquisition price is also a crucial factor that most people often leave out of such discussions. What matters more than anything else is the resell-ability of specific individual domains ... (effectively what most would generalise as the "quality" of the domain, but it's important to remember that even what some might consider a quality domain isn't always a good investment, depending on the domain, the niche and the purchase price)

On that front, finding and purchasing domains on the aftermarket is generally easier when it comes to finding such domains. But that most certainly does not preclude the fact that occasionally great buys can be made at handreg. But unless it's a future-tech you are gambling on (which is 100% ok as long as you are aware of the chances of the particular future-tech), then holding on to a particular domain for 10 years doesn't really do anything except lose you 10x more money.

So that leaves us at these specific domains. And unfortunately on those, I'm really sorry to say, I do not like them at all. That being said .. I also literally don't like more than 99% of domains that go through expiration auctions.

Just to give you an idea, a good number of the domains I've shared here were closeouts. So when you factor in the price difference (+$5 to +$11 = ~2x randreg .. and only 10% over handreg over 10 years) they are vastly better domain investments than the ones you've listed above.

Of the ones you listed, the ones I like the most are vScrapbook, SmartTinge and MobileSecurity.Group .. although I would not have bought any of them even at closeout pricing ($5 + renewal). However .. I most certainly would not have said buying vScrapbook and SmartTinge at handreg were bad purchases. The problem is that I think you have a less than 50% chance of selling one of them for $2000 in 10 years .. which is what you need simply to break even.

While you could get lucky and it could happen (I really hope so for you), the real answer here is that the $200 initial investment could have been far better invested in aftermarket domains .. and in my eyes .. specifically expiring domain auctions where I've personally found tons of great investments because of the relative ease at which I'm able to grab solid domains and great prices! :)

Side question: Did you actually already renew these domains for 10 years? Or was the 10 years hypothetical for the sake of this discussion?

Hypothetical all for the sake of discussion. I mean I did register them fairly recently if I am recalling correctly! And no I won't renew them all for 10 years because I won't renew all of them!
