I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

Mature or not I hope it never opens up.

Besides California won't be the same economic heavy weight after it gets swallowed by the Pacific ;)
I think we live in a global economy, and given there are so many alt extensions, keeping it geo locked it is doing it a disservice. The population of California matches all of that of Canada, but California would probably have a 3 to 1 active user base compared to that of Canada.

Valuations have been stagnant past 5 years, if not negative. If you want this extension to grow I think it needs to be done.

Unless California is going to become a province, I just don't see it happening.

Rather than simply posting your domain name, you have a higher chance of stoking discussion by asking a question coupled with your domain.

I personally don't see commercial value in Expertly.ca - it's a domain that would have value as a .com, but is relatively weak as a .ca.

Just my opinion - take it as you will.

a strong keyword is a strong keyword anywhere.
and also some dnjournal sales
westleaf 20000
triangle 15000
oberlo 15000 (and that's just a mishmash of 6 letters)

Triangle is in a league of its own. One-word shape domains are just about as generic, brandable, and memorable as it gets (also, colours + animals).

Oberlo is a large, well-established online service provider. Again, not comparable, as the purchase is purely brand protection.

WestLeaf was overpaid for, imo. You can't just pick and choose domain sales as you see fit.

The mark of an experienced domainer is metered expectations.

Sometimes lightning strikes and you get lucky. Triangle.ca was owned for 17 years before it sold - and it sold relatively cheaply in my mind. It could have easily went another 17 years without selling too.

Westleaf.ca and oberlo.ca were definitely not just some random words or letters. Those were definitely registered because someone knew the .com was registered and located in Canada - then scored a sale because the .com owners just wanted to quickly fix their mistake of not registering the .ca earlier. Those sellers just got lucky there wasn't a CDRP involved.

Expertly.ca certainly has some chance of selling - it just depends on price and how long you're willing to renew it and wait for the one buyer to come along. You'll need a pretty large portfolio of those kind of domains in order to expect a few sales a year - then you have to factor in renewal costs, etc... You may find it wasn't worth it. I will say I've seen much worse hand-reg's though!

So while you may get lucky, domain investors don't find long term success on being lucky.

Note that there were a ton of similar **ly.ca domains in this week's TBR - probably because someone eventually gave up on renewing all of them due to no sales.

If you really like the domain, you might be better off developing it yourself rather than waiting for a sale. Turn it into a referral network of experts in various professions & trades?

Fantastic stuff. Clear, concise, and well-intentioned.

I am offered similar domains on almost a daily basis and always respond that the names are decent but just not marketable enough at this stage in the game for .ca.

There are a couple of really big .ca players that will pick up almost anything of value.
A clue for @cabotower would be that these names seem to drop except occasionally a newer domainer will pick one or two up thinking they got a bargain.

I'm liking some of the new interactions here guys

@Joshua Harding - you are well spoken and seem to have found your calling.

@cabotower - you are asking all the right questions, you will get a good portfolio, give it time.

@rlm - we are fortunate to have you and I very much look forward to your posts.

Wondering if someone making money leasing them?
But the lessee would still have to be compliant with .ca nexus
4.1 Certain Registrant Obligations.
Throughout the Term of this Agreement, the Registrant shall comply with and abide by all provisions of this Agreement and the Registry PRP. Furthermore, the Registrant shall, in accordance with this Agreement and the Registry PRP:

...

not allow any third party to use or operate any Domain Name Registration registered in the name of the Registrant and not register any Domain Name as agent for, or on behalf of, any third party in any manner whatsoever, including without limiting the generality of the foregoing, for the purposes of lending, leasing, licensing or otherwise granting rights in such Domain Name Registration to any third party for monetary or nonmonetary consideration, unless such third party: (i) otherwise qualifies under the applicable Registry PRP including without limitation CIRA’s Canadian Presence for Registrants which is located on CIRA’s website at www.cira.ca/assets/Documents/Legal/Registrants/CPR.pdf; or (ii) is an Affiliate of the Registrant. For this purpose, “third party” means any Person other than CIRA and the Registrant.

I think .ca is mature enough now that they should drop the ownership restrictions. California is a large market where inquiries do come from.
I guess this is precisely the kind of dilution Cira are afraid of. There are Americans who actually think .ca is a TLD for California :dead:

I registered hundreds of those and have sold a number of them for 5k.

I have had google analytics running on all my domains for a while and for letters like mtro and movu are doing exceedingly well. Those two as an example have had numerous offers.

At this point I have massive data on 4 letter .ca's and I know what has activity and what does not.
