What do you think?

..before domaining becomes mainstream, is this an emerging "No Appraisal"

IMO, a domain is worth what the domain owner is looking to sell at. Seller only knows the dedication, time in finding/buying, money, holding time, risk and many other factors involved in it can only be well understood by the domain owner.

8 out of 10 businesses fail. Yet, consumers go on with their lives fine without those businesses. A product is worth with a person is willing to pay. I've seen countless domains that's been on the market for 20+ years and haven't sold because the owner doesn't understand this basic principle. Yet, businesses continue to be built and succeed online without having those names. Someone may want your domain name but never think someone NEEDS your name in order to succeed because they don't. There are always alternatives.

On the same domains I had $xx, $xxx and $x,xxx offers... and $10K offers...
Potential buyers are absolutely various... with different budget and goals.

How many domains YOU sold for significant money?

Replace person with medium-sized business.

Negotiation skills and psychology - the most important factors which have impact on price.

I do think domains (or most things in fact) are worth differently to each person. If you're a lover of bikes, then say "cars.com" isn't going to be worth as much to you unlike "bikes.com". We all perceive the worth of something depending on our own interests, and so yes I do agree.

Sometimes I see domains myself and think "wow, that's cheap" but to someone else who may not be as interested as I am may feel it's "too expensive".

Regarding 20+ years domains...
If portfolio size is small - you may sell them even 20+ years until you meet the right buyer... because cashflow is not critical.
And certainly, not all generics are brandable... not all are suitable for company name... that's why they are not in high demand...

If that were true I would have sold most of my domains for 100 bucks because that is the most common offer and how much one person was willing to pay for it at that time.

I said no..... now the next person has to offer more

So who decides what the domain is worth?

It is very true that individual interests / passions will influence how much value one places on a particular product or service. Someone who is passionate about motorcycles might b willing to pay serious money for a bike with many features. I could care less. But I might be willing to spend more on a pair of Asics running shoes and have more pairs of running shoes than the guy who owns the bike.

Relative to what businesses spend on all kinds of normal operating expenditures, $1500 to $5000 really is not that much money. However, the vast majority of people view a domain name as a low $xx expenditure so when domainers ask four or five figures for a domain we quite often experience serious resistance.

i like outreach (like email/site) saying, "send bids for sale to the highest bidder timely.."

so that the liquidity value is up to the seller's highest bid that may be accepted or not on his/her watch.

just food for thought against estibot similar sales etc. no appraisal emerging in domaining because i have experience where someone really wanted a domain but the seller wouldn't give. maybe the thought is if someone really wanted a domain person(s) would add an extra digit like $xxx-$x,xxx or $x,xxx-$xx,xxx and even $xx,xxx-$xxx,xxx (how else do people make top dnjournal lists unless by saying alot of "no's")

just saying.. more towards NO APPRAISAL
