information Top Topics: A Shift Away from .COM?; Your Predictions for 2019...

Spaceship Spaceship
This is the final edition of Top Topics before Christmas, so I want to take a second to wish a Happy Christmas to all readers who celebrate the occasion. Whilst the festive period tends to be a quiet time in domaining, it can be an opportunity to acquire expiring domains at auction with a little less competition. If you have the option to check domain lists this holiday season, you might just grab a bargain or two.

Here are this week’s Top Topics.

A Worldwide Shift Away from .COM

Could a worldwide shift away from .COM happen? Domain investor @MapleDots believes it could happen. According to the discussion, businesses in countries such as the UK, India, and Canada rely on their local domain extensions (.CO.UK, .IN and .CA respectively) rather than .COM equivalents.

Based on this logic, is the worldwide dominance of .COM inevitably going to diminish? This has produced a fascinating debate with investors on both sides of the argument.

All Domains Are Available for 10 Seconds: Which Do You Register?

Here’s a discussion that’s purely for fun. All domain names are available to register for just ten seconds, which name do you acquire? The responses to this question contain some obvious answers such as valuable one and two-letter .COM’s as well as some of the best generic single-word .COM’s.

Which name would you register? My personal favorite would be X.com, now owned by Elon Musk.

Alert: NWX.com Is Stolen

Three-letter .COM domains are a prime target for opportunist thieves since they are in demand, liquid assets that can be moved quickly for a five-figure fee. The latest three-letter name to be listed as stolen is NWX.com.

The theft was reported by veteran investor and TheDomains.com’s managing editor Raymond Hackney (@equity78) after speaking with the rightful owner.

Yes, I'm bullish on alternative ccTLDs. This will hinge on whether there is an actual product that the domain is pointing to. I chose Beep.IM since it fits in with the instant messaging niche. Other domains will see their own niches respectively. We're also seeing more of the .law and .attorneys being used by lawyers instead of thisthatandtheotherassociates.com
