Most people are hobbyists or part timers, why would they ever retire? It's a side hustle for some, a hobby for many, a full time job for few.

I would choose an option that I don't see in the poll:
as long as something is profitable and profits are stable, why ever retire? (unless due to health issues ofc)

I tried to give it up about 8 years ago, I kept my portfolio and just did my thing, I couldn't let it go, my passion for domaining will never stop until I am dead, and i will still domain when i dead too lol.

I voted never (I mean I did not buy my first domain until about age 50 and did not join NPs until retired, so got to make up for lost time!) but I am a little worried because the following already applies a bit to me :xf.grin:. That is why I never spend large amounts for a domain, would not be clear exactly what I was buying!

When I'm old and I cant see the screen anymore.

Although I voted never, really for me if I found it no longer interesting and fun and challenging I would move on to other things.

I do seriously worry about the addictive side of it though, and hope to keep it in balance with other things in life this year and going forward.

Have a great 2019 everyone!

Bob

3 scenarios I can think about:

a) domain names becoming irrelevant, due to new technologies and this sort of things. However, this scenario is delayed, thanks to ICANN. By introducing a bunch of new gtlds ( ==> a lot of $$$ spent by registrars and other related businesses) they in fact delayed it.

b) successful lobbying by verisign .com registry (variable registration and renewal pricing). In this case switching to domainer-friendly CCtlds may be an alternative, but who knows...

c) global cataclysms, planet X announced, etc etc. This or similar scenario where purchasing an aftermarket domain, or any domain, will become the last thing people will think about.

I never found domaining addictive, (though I know some do) It's just very time-consuming if your going to be involved at a serious level . If I'm away, say travelling I don't miss being involved or actively buying or selling. But, at home it can become a time-consuming distraction.. Just like any sideline or Hobby.

I think of many of us, having the body-builders syndrome, once you start to feel the effects or see the smallest results Your Hooked...

I will continue as long as I make more than 1,5 times the amount that I invest.

Ps. But I hope for 4-5 times ;)

Yes, a Fun Hobby for many people:
I am preparing to do some "very serious" domain sales, but also have other options. So many opportunities and the days fly by too fast... :)

Within 5 years / after I've hit a specific target / amass a good portfolio and just sit on it. Investing is rewarding, but it is also a grind. All the time sitting in front of a computer is not healthy at all. It's not only the inactivity, but also the wear on your back. Hope everyone is taking care to take frequent breaks, move around, go outside, and interact with people in the real world.
