The end of 2018 has come. The past year or so there have been a couple extra options introduced for sellers to sell their domains.

I wanted to run a poll to see which venue/service sellers prefer to use.

Feel free to post why it’s your preferred avenue for selling in the comments.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Note: you can vote for max 2 choices, since brandable domains can have targeted venues

Is efty considered a market place or a software which you can setup as your own website? I think it should not be on the list as it differs from all of them.if it should be there, I know scripts similar to efty that should be there too. Voted.

The list is marketplace or service, efty would be a service for selling domains

My Afternic and Godaddy

I sell most names privately, but I like Undeveloped. 9% commission is very reasonable. Personally, I think 20% is just too much.

If I have to pick, which I did, I would say GoDaddy, but my real sales venue is my own outbound effort.

Voted none of the above ..... My nameservers sell domains the best doesnt matter where I point them

I prefer the options that are free to use! NO COMMISSION

My vote went to Undeveloped. I like its uncluttered look, its ease of use, and its nice landing pages.

I like the lowest possible fees -- so right now for me it's Efty (with transaction through escrow.com most of the time -- sometimes Sedo escrow is used).

However, I have been thinking about Afternic / GoDaddy because the added "eyeballs" might justify their fees. If I sell more names, maybe it's worth it... Will test a portion of my names that I already assigned a fixed price -- I will just list them with a slightly higher price to see if I get more sales through Afternic / GD

Wow. Quite a range of choices. I chose Afternic first. I like their reach with their network of sellers, which includes GoDaddy. I then went and added Efty. I like their platform quite a lot. Although I haven't used it much. However, most of my domains are pointed to my own website.

You said everything I wanted to say, I also voted for AfterNic and Efty. AfterNic, with all their faults, brings in a lot of sales doesn't matter whether you use their nameservers or not, I would pay 20% for this but their service is awful and I wish with all the money they make for a small amount of work they should try and improve their website and service.

Afternic and Sedo have partners. This is what I like about them. But none meets my expections completely. Curious about Efty.

When its come to sell as Make an offer than I say, Undeveloped.com is amazing. But when I want sell some names quickly than Afternic & Sedo both work great only I need to lower the BIN.

I like instant sale offered by Epik and Namesilo. Maybe a few others like Dynadot, Uniregistry, Godaddy, Namecheap may be offering the same thing.

For reaching Chinese buyers I think Afternic is a good choce, because strangely Chinese people don't seem to buy domains if not offered by Godaddy. I dropped 30 3 letter .co's just because Chinese people insist on Godaddy. But I tested my domains listed on AN at Godaddy, and they were not visible.

Sedo is good for reaching European buyers, but it was better. Now they have many mistakes. It looks like their agenda is not selling domains owned by domainers. They use those domains to get traffic, and then do what they want to do with that traffic. They don't fix those mistakes, although they are obvious.

Efty: considering using it for good landing pages, and IP checking. Still thinking.

Use your own server?: But domain need to be transferred in a way acceptable to the buyer. They don't want to get scammed, by paying and getting nothing.

Outbounding? : Same as above, you can find a buyer, but then you need to sell somewhere.
.........
Outbounding is a must, otherwise sales don't recover renewals. But outbounding doesn't work either. Maybe when it is mixed with good landing page, it may work. You can sell 10 domains and recover registration costs of 1000 domains, but what to do with all 990 domains which have the same quality as the 10 sold ones. Sitting on them costs more than registering them. It is a big dilemma.

@topdom,

1) Those 3 letter .co domains you dropped, if not picked up before the drop, will be retained by the registry as premium domains. It's their policy. I generally renew my 3L .co domains.

2) I think Afternic's reseller network is better than Sedo's. Although many of the resellers are the same.

3) You should make the decision to use Efty. They have one of the best offerings, IMHO. But I'm not clear how much kudos they have with the buyers. They might prefer a fast transfer instead. I would, and I do as a seller also. Obviously prices are higher with a fast transfer though. Which might be a consideration. Endusers, as a whole prefer things simple and straightforward, generally, with the domain appearing at their choice of registrar with no fuss, no muss. And you cannot blame them for not wanting to jump thru hoops.

4) There is no real difference between your own website and Efty, except maybe Efty looks nicer :) Both should be going thru Escrow for the security of the buyer and seller. They both have a disadvantage over fast transfer in that you and the buyer, are left to do all the transfering manually. Which is totally automated with a fast transfer.

5) Outbound is not a must. It depends on your business model. If you have outbounded all 1000 domains (all credit to you) and sold 10. It's probably time to drop those 990 domains. Unless 1 or 2 take your fancy to renew.

IMHO. Fast Transfer is the future. It makes everything very easy for both the buyer and seller. I'm going headlong into fast transfer this year. I have been reluctant to set fixed prices in the past. But I'm fixing my prices plus 25% (=20% commission on sale), as fast as I can (with all my other demands on my time). My website prices will be 10% cheaper than Fast Transfer prices, for the bargain hunter. All domains point to my website. Not to Afternic/Sedo. It's going to be a lot of thought and hard work to get this setup nicely.

Why Godaddy. If I have a domain at, say, Namecheap, should I try to sell it on Godaddy, or list on Godaddy? It doesn't make much sense. I suspect most Chinese people think there is no domain company except Godaddy. If I list on AN and Sedo should I also list on Godaady for more sales. ...Most Namebio sales are Godaddy sales. I have no explanation for it. Maybe it is a popular auction platform. Other sites are not used for searching domains (?) Almost all Namebio sales seem have domainers as buyers, no endusers. ... btw, none of my sales are reported on Namebio. Also no Sedo sales or AN sales seem to appear at Namebio. Maybe Namebio is only reporting auctions. ...I will try auctions one day (soon), and invite potential endusers, but not sure where to do it.

If you list it on Afternic, it will be listed at GoDaddy automatically. I'm not sure if it works the same the other way around.
