So you know how everyone is trying to predict the new .com and a lot of people thought that .co could possibly be the new .com. Well I guess that did not quite pan out because technically .co is still a ccTLD.

So that got me to thinking if maybe there was one that people had not thought of yet. Some of the top domainers in the world seem to think that .web might be the next one in line but personally I never cared for that because www already stands for world wide web so basically you would have world wide web businessname.web. Just kind of sounds wrong to me and I'm not sure if it is really the new .com.

So with the .com availability becoming more and more scarce what do you think will be the next big boom?

Now we are not looking for a replacement for .com but a prediction or suggestion for a new complimentary extension.

So upon some Looooooooooooooooooooong reflection I think I might have stumbled across a couple of great ones. I think it's only because I am a domainer that these came to mind and most ordinary folks would not think of it.

Here we go....

.com and the new complementary extension .dom (as in domain)

That would be my first choice, my second choice would be...

.com and the new complementary extension .dn (as in domain name)

In all the time I have looked at similar topics I have not seen anyone mention .dom but it almost makes sense that this could be a viable extension that both domainers and the general public could be happy with.

So what do you think? Could .dom or .dn be a possibility?

If not please list you favorite choice for a new world wide extension that would be your choice.

PS. To everyone thinking of flaming this topic with .com is king and similar content please refrain from that because I will ask a mod to delete it and keep everyone on topic. This topic is to discuss a viable extension that could handle the overflow from .com and the possibility of another REAL domain gold rush with another extension.

I would imagine a "parallel earth" with no dots inside the domains:). Or maybe another technology level which our children will live with. Indeed, www.something with .something being available to endusers 1st come - 1st served is possible, at least technically.

P.S. @DOMAIN ILLUMINATI should be of different opinion ;)

technically it can easily be done globally but still we got to choose one extension but would remain hidden always.

If the system could be altered to allow domains without an extension that would be a game changer. It would mean that you would need to physically select to use a search engine by visiting them not just typing into an address bar. It would also mean that keywords would become highly valuable as typing in a word would redirect you to a site rather than Google or Bing.

I don't see this ever happening but if it did, there would be a new goldrush for these domains as type in traffic would be massive.

can easily be done but as i said you got to choose at least one extension for all......

We are already in the process of removing the www with some browsers not showing it anymore period.

So in the future if we had no domain extension it would be just a word and typing that in the address bar would engage a search instead of an address, so I think we are stuck with extensions for now.

Yes, it would require browsers to remove the inbuilt search functionality so dotless addresses would work.

There is none, .net was the closest. That was an option most of the time and people still went out of their way to get a .com. Just go thru your bookmarks, how many .net sites are there. If .web came out, it would be in .net territory.

I agree...

We will probably never experience anything close to .com again. It has been, is, and will be an outstanding one of a kind.

43,6% of all current domains are .com. That includes all ccTLDs and ngTLDs (+1500 extensions).

That would break the Internet so every legacy system would have to be upgraded but would be interesting

I don't like the double d sound. Also too close sounding to .dumb

Good point dom as in adult domaination also, another headache.

Maybe we should call it .cam, and you can get a .ca play out of it, wait .cam is already live. Sounds like .com.

Outside, of .net and .org there are few if any viable alternatives to .com, a few in certain niches find .io to be great but that is a limited number of people as 90% of non-domainers have never heard of .io thus making it mostly bad for business.

No feedback on .dn yet

The question would be quite similar to:

What is your internet address

or

What is your Domain Name?

The words Domain Name are already quite well known by the public.

I think the NGTLD ".co.com" could be valuable in the future...

.do is Dominican Republic

Each country has 2 letter and 3 letter code.

Russia has ru and rus.

These guys have do and dom.

You are confusing codes with domains. The latter are based on the former.

Well stated, I would think Denmark may have an issue with .DN if it ever came out.

@MapleDots

I dont get it why do u hate .com so much is it because you missed the .com boat? Are you having a hard time buying .com and its giving you the blues? Give up bro..Nothing is going to beat .com Ever or Ever or Ever. You just had another thread up knocking .com idk why you so mad at .com

Your starting to turn into the .top guy

.CO WILL NEVER BE .COM
.IO WILL NEVER BE .COM
.CA WILL NEVER BE .COM

MAYBE .HORSE IS YOUR ONLY HOPE

Not really, as search engines treat it exactly the same as a gTLD, as opposed to a real ccTLD like .CA or .DE, which automatically gives companies an advantage for searches from that same country.

Since there are two distinct tiers of ccTLDs, maybe they need to call one ccTLD and the other cgTLD?

Why not .co. or .cm ?? Because they all will leak business to the .com

That's a little old school isn't it? Sure, if you're looking to set up a multinational corporation, then definitely buy the best .COM you can so that all radio, TV, and print ads are maximized, but for some small local store or online enterprise that uses far different methods of promotion, this whole "will leak business to the .COM" scare stuff went out the plague. It's an old type-in traffic ghost story.

Lots of companies are running on .CO (or .ORG or .NET) and doing just fine as they rely on online promotion and search engine traffic that doesn't care what extension you use. Once they get huge enough that it matters, they'll have enough money to buy the .COM or rebrand.

I see this "Buy the .CO then upgrade to the .COM" strategy employed on a daily basis and it works.

It's like 1-800 phone numbers... if you missed it, you missed it. Yes, we have 888 which is fairly common, but things get lost on 877, 866 and 855

.Global has seemed to pick up a little traction, I don’t much care the extension though.

I could see a new mainstream extension or ? presence happing, but not for a while, maybe 10 years from now, could be sooner.

The internet will evolve again at some point, and I expect many new things to come, computers will change, the internet basics in general will change IMO

I think we still have some years to go before it does though.

.dom is actually pretty appealing to me.
