Sold 3 domains on eBay, received PayPal dispute nearly 3 months later

I sold 3 low end adult domains on eBay for a total of $273 back on 9/22/2018. All 3 domains were purchased at the same time via the BIN for each. I pushed the domains into the buyers accounts at Dynadot, NameSilo, and NameBright that very same day. Funds from the sale were initially held by PayPal but were released to me a couple of days later.

7 or 8 days after the domains had been sold and pushed the buyer contacts me and says to refund him as this was an unauthorized purchased and that his account was hacked. I told the buyer to contact PayPal but the buyer replied back, "It wasn't my PayPal it was my credit card information on my account". To this I responded that he needed to contact his CC provider to dispute it. I was expecting to receive something from PayPal in the next couple of days saying that the payment was being disputed or the funds had been charged back but didn't hear anything.

On 12/16/2018 I received an email from PayPal saying, "We are writing to let you know one of your buyers opened a case for this transaction. The buyer stated that they did not authorize this purchase." I filled out my part of the PayPal dispute and included screenshots of my eBay conversation with the buyer that showed them saying which account to push the domains to at Dynadot, NameSilo, and NameBright and also screenshots of the emails from Dynadot, NameSilo, and NameBright showing the pushes were successful. The NameSilo and NameBright push emails even show the accounts the domains were pushed into, which are the same ones specified in the eBay conversation with the buyer.

From what I've read online it sounds like PayPal will probably side with the buyer as PayPal and eBay are really poor at protecting sellers when it comes to selling domains. I've contacted Dynadot, NameSilo, and NameBright about getting the domains back if PayPal sides with the buyer as all three domains are still at the same registrar. All three registrars have said pretty much the same thing in that they can't assist me with this matter as it was a private sale. NameSilo and NameBright placed a transfer lock on the domains they had but basically unless I take legal action against the person to get my names back there's nothing else they'll do for me. Not worth the time or money to recover these domains, luckily for me the domains weren't too valuable. I'll be removing all my other eBay domain listings as this has shown me just how easy it is for scammers to rip others off there.

TLDR; be wary of selling domains on eBay as it's too easy for scammers to rip you off.

Now to give you a counter here.....

I use my in house credit card machine and the TOS when you buy a domain from me clearly states you cannot initiate a charge back after you take possession or you will be responsible for all legal fees and a minimum of a $500 dollar service fee.

The purchaser has to sign this document to initiate the process.

For one of my online store (I use a similar TOS) someone did initiate a charge back and I literally had the funds back within the week. As soon as I provided the bill of sale to merchant services they understood I was in the right.

Getting a merchant account is very easy and I still think the 2% I pay on the charge cards to be very reasonable.

That is why I like selling via my landers instead of eBay or similar. It gives me much more control over the sale without dealing with too many middle men.

PS. I hope you win, someone has your domains and eBay should stand behind their service.

I don’t know how PayPal could possibly side with them. They would have to have their eBay and PayPal account hacked on the same day/days. And the “hacker “ was calmly conversing with you from someone else’s account? 😂

Also why did it take this guy 90 days to say he didn’t authorize something? That in itself is suspect. If they do side with him it’s because it’s cheaper to have you refund him than them deal with a real chargeback which he still has time to do.

I would not sell domains on Ebay but I know many do.

He always sells at reasonable amounts and I see him on the forum here once in a while.

Request IP logins check from eBay and ask the registrars to compare the owner data.
Just in case he forgot to use a proxy or a fake ID.

What do they actually tell you? Forget what you "read online". Over 10 years i won countless disputes at PP, both as a buyer and a seller. If you send them all docs and screenshots, they should grant it to you. I think i had only two cases out of i think more than 50 when i lost despite all docs and screenshots.

If he's in the USA, have you tried contacting the police? Not sure if it will do any good, but even the threat of it may motivate the buyer if he really is trying to scam you. Years ago I had a couple problems and the police did wonders in motivating the people. It was for actual merchandise though. Domains might be tougher.

I'm trying a few listings on eBay. They're for higher priced domains. I'm listing them as Classified Ads and I only accept Escrow.com.

there is a reason domainers use escrows.. whether sedo.. gd auctions.. undeveloped etc..
its to avoid getting paid directly by paypal.

and when you sell on ebay, its basically like getting paid directly by paypal.. cause ebay offers no seller protection for something like domains.

Do the sites resolve anywhere ? Who hosts them ?
