I've been buying domain names for 7 months now and realize I've bought some bad names, but also believe that I have acquired some very good ones too. I have them for sale at afternic and sedo but as yet have had no sales or enquiries. I know it can take a long time to sell just one but jeez. I've sent loads of outbound emails but had no response. Just don't know what to do next apart from wait .

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Wait, I was and still presently in your position, what I did, I started listing my names on NameJet, and though it is small I have made a lot of progress.

I started in my first incarnation in 2000, again in 2002, got good traction in 2008, formed MapleDots in 2010 and make a really good living from it today.

7 months??

HeHe..... try 7 years to make any real money unless you get extremely lucky.

List your names at as many outlets as you can (at least the 4/5 biggest marketplaces).

Make sure you have landing pages set up on every name whether it's your own for sales lander, a marketplace lander or parked page with for sale banner.

List them at reasonable/realistic prices and accept reasonable/realistic offers (don't be greedy).

Remember that a good sell through the rate is 2-3% of portfolio per year so if you have less than 100 names it's entirely feasible that you wouldn't sell a name in a year.

Never assume that any of your names will sell. Domains are not money in the bank and untill they sell they are an expense so don't spend more than you can afford to lose and remember that you need to pay for them every year.

If none of your names have received any interest, don't be afraid to admit you may have bad names and may lose money. Never double down.

Above all have patience. Domaining isn't get rich quick.

Oh and enjoy yourself.

I will do you a favor and be honest and blunt, I will also disclose I am also new and have few sales to say I have experience, but here is advice I think has value.

I seen your previous thread on wanting advice, your issue is clear, you need to read through this forum more, just read. and you need to stop trusting your opinions if your new, and stop making buy decisions based on what others are buying. 90+% of the domains your seeing being bought wont sell for any amount worth the time. so do this:

- research actual keywords in namebio for past sales of past 5 years and check the amounts they populate, build a list off of this, then compare your "cellphones" keyword to that list and assume 99.9 % of your domains you have will never sell. I had to do the same.

- next the only threads to follow daily are completed sales, learn from what people are selling, not buying.
100% of what sold actually sold, what is being bought maybe reach 1-10 % , so play the odds.

you can do extensive research on expired domains also, if your keywords have many available in closeouts or deleted, than wake up and smell the roses.

if your already adding numbers with letters or using dashes, than stop buying, assume every domain you have is a lesson, and get a real keyword list, buy off of math, and tell your opinions to rest.

For somebody fairly new at this you have really good insights (y)

Put your domain everywhere, if possible do not be a "secret seller"...domains need exposure :) They should be in your signature, in your marketplace, all over the place! Put them to appraisal threads, go to LinkedIn, go to Twitter, Facebook, post them in Instagram...if one just sit and wait, one can sit and wait for years.

The notion that someone will just register some domains and buyers will knock on their doors with offers is funny, although many newer investors think this is going to happen.

Oh, and also trim your portfolio with large vigour, and keep only the best names - do not send money after bad money (aka do not renew your domains just because you purchased them). GL!

Patience is required in this business.
But this is not the same as stubbornness. If you have bad names you might as well wait for 10 years and not see any interest from end users. You have to be able to question your purchases, especially in the beginning.

The majority of domainers are struggling and losing money. I mean, it's not like your personal experience is an anomaly. It is the norm. There is money to be made in this industry, but it's much more difficult than people assume.
Good luck.

1. Stop waiting around for people to come to you and instead identify end users and reach out to them.

2. Don't keep paying renewals for crappy names, if it was a hand reg, in this day in age, unless it is a new invention or a new event... there is likely a reason it was available as a reg fee.

3. There may be far more money in developing the name than just letting it sit or flipping it. This is especially true in high CPC keyword names, like insurance.

Find someone who knows what they are doing to go through your portfolio maybe get a few people and a few points of view.

Figure out what do hold and want to dump

Next learn what a good domain is. Learn the whole sale value and retail value

Now time to rebuy

Next find places to back order and buy domains dont pay near your retail number

Domaining isn't just about buying and selling names, sometimes it is about dropping names..!!

I've been doing this a while and like someone said above it can take years...not months...to realize profit.

20% of my names are ok...70% are decent...9% are good...1% are exceptional.

The good news is all segments will sell, it depends on pricing. Set realistic prices and accept any offer that is in the ballpark until you get 'seasoned'.

You say, "I have no idea what to do next"

I reply,

“The journey is more important than the destination”

Welcome to domaining!

This is not a get rich quick avenue.. it also is a numbers game. The more good quality domains you have, the more sales or interest you’ll have from buyers. One thing I can say is be certain you are capturing direct traffic to your domains.. meaning, use efty, undeveloped or uniregistry etc to post a for sale sign on your domains. So many of my sales come directly through landers.

I've currently got them on sedo and afternic .

Just don't do that via PM (Private Message), I've seen situations where new members were persuaded to trade some pretty good names for crap. I remember saying to myself.... you traded for that? holy crap, they were twice as bad as what the poor guy gave up.

In other words he was hustled by someone appearing on the surface to want to help him.

These are just a few but are many more

actually you can mention your domain, so everyone can know your domain have hope or not :D lol

without knowing your domain its hard to tell!

for example if your domain cellphones(in king) mean dot Com, I am sure someday someone will buy it! but if your domain cellphones(org), its hard to tell, because obviously cellphones and ORg doesn't sound right! even though if you have luck! believe it or not, someone will buy it! though! the price will not high, but again it will depend on situation! if you can play your card right and play hard to get :D maybe you can get decent price! But I have to tell you, domain biz are almost same like investment! sometime you loose sometime you win :xf.grin: unless you want to risk big money! something like buy 1 word com with reseller price, and then you you sell at end user price! but for me personally its still risky :xf.grin:

Btw don't hope to much, especially when you spend $10 :-P i.e HandReg domain !

I could tell you to be patient, but once you understand the game better, you'd call me hypocrite.

So...

I've been buying domain names...
Buying means buying or registering? General advice here is stay away from registrations, specially if you haven't nurtured "sense" for saleable domains. The more you have the more you pay. Every year!

...for 7 months now...
Good opportunities come and go. So many streams of domains to buy, not so many mid-high margin domains though. After 7 months you may have 1 to 1000+ domains, who knows.

...and realize I've bought some bad names, but also believe that I have acquired some very good ones too.
How do you rank those domains? By how "nice" they are, or by how much you like em? Don't use your eyes, but potential buyer's eyes. I strongly recommend to be pessimistic and work on your sense for saleable domains. Not that you only need to know what sells, but you also have to be quiet precise with your valuations. The more precise the better.

I have them for sale at afternic and sedo but as yet have had no sales or enquiries.
If you have a domain listed at popular marketplace without single offer for such a long time, it's not a good sign. Any domain could sell for whatever price, but do you want to bet on odds of selling supershittylongdomain.weirdextension for $1M? I would not.

I know it can take a long time to sell just one but jeez.
It takes long time to sell random domains. It's much easier to move good names though.

I've sent loads of outbound emails but had no response.
There surely is a reason for that. You either try to sell shitty names OR your prices are insane OR your emails are crap OR you target wrong potential buyers OR your emails end up in the spam...

Just don't know what to do next apart from wait.
One thing you can do is improve! :)
  • save cash by buying less crap, to get one good name
  • buy with confidence. think first before you hit Buy/Register button.
  • make sure you know who need that domain and why before you buy. if you don't know, do not buy.
  • research potential leads and make sure there are multiple, not just one. the more the better.
  • learn more about the domain, research it's history, find out why your leads still don't own it. is it because they don't need it? or is it because it was unavailable? you don't have to own the domain to find out.
If you have strong name, avoid typical outbound. It could affect the price in a negative way... What you want to do is teasing potential buyers by simply informing them about availability, possibility, whatever. They have to chase you if you want to sell for serious money.

There is lot more to it, but if you can implement at least few points, you should do better.

My opinion!
