GoDaddy uses their gabillion sale stats to determine their estimated domain values. I know I'm new, but I got kind of blown away when I noticed .org was being valued more than .net. I used to always think it was the other way around. I used to always think the order was:

  1. .com
  2. .net
  3. .org
  4. .io
  5. .co
  6. .info
  7. .biz
  8. .us

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.NET is viewed as old school (there was even a recent slam on Elementary where they disparagingly noted a .Net site in an investigation with a "haven't seen one of those in a while".) and ever since .ORG was opened up to anyone and lost that charity-ghetto feel, demand has risen steadily.

.ORG is really the better descriptive name, and many capitalistic online and crypto companies have adopted this gTLD as their main site. .COM will still be the go-to extension for huge, monopolistic hyper-capitalist corporations, but .ORG is taking off in a lot of other areas, mostly dealing in online technologies and services.

The way I see it:

1 .COM
2 . ORG
3. .CO/.NET - tie
5 .IO

I now only reg .com and .org unless I see something special in other tld's.

Nothing abnormal here, .ORG demand is really higher than .NET - if we are talking about US market...
If German market - then .NET a few times more valuable than .ORG
etc.
Each local market has its own preferences...

That is good to know. I would be interested in finding out where & why other extensions are more valuable than others.

.org has an identity of its own and and a good identity and ranks #2, imo, with .net having no real identity today and is probably valued about the same as many new tlds. However, In health and wellness area (and possibly a few other categories too) sometimes dot-org can actually be valued higher vs .com. There are a number of well known large health sites who prefer dot-org over .com

With rare exceptions I now only register and renew .com and .org and maintain and renew just 5 new tlds with low and normal renewal costs, letting the others such as .net .us .info .biz, new tlds and others all expire.

At least in NameBio listed sales, 2018 YTD:
  • .co 384 sales with $2449 average price
  • .io 707 sales with $1541 average price
  • .net 1804 sales with $948 average price
  • .org 2938 sales with $783 average price
I personally think they all are potentially worthwhile, but that certain words fit better with one than another. Like .io is highly desired in computation oriented startups. If starting a general purpose company .co is probably the best of these 4. For an online reference site it seems to me that .net or .org depending on who is doing it both work well. In crypto space .org and .io are both desired. I think no doubt the general public know .net better than the others on this list.

For me .net is more valuable for general use. .org has always be named for non-profit.

That hasn't been a requirement for a very long time, and like I said previously, a lot of for-profit online and crypto companies are flooding to .ORG. The big multinational corporations will always stay with .COM, but there are lots of smaller companies on .ORG, especially the next-generation digital/online ones like Crypto.

I think going forward we're going to see .ORG pull away even further, as young adults (and most people in general) have absolutely no idea that back in the dark ages of the Internet, there used to be an requirement for .ORG to be non-profit.

I own 2 non-profits and chose a .ORG for both of them several years ago and they work great for our purpose. I have the .Com just to forward but we use the .ORG in marketing to donors and advertising.

It's not so much profit vs. non-profit (which is a real gray line anyway), but multinational corporations, e-commerce. B&M, etc. (.COM) vs. fully online/digital/crypto products and services (where .ORG as a viable option).

There are lots of companies offering crypto currencies, online investments, consulting, hosting, etc., and even domain name sales, using .ORG and they don't seem to be going out of business. That's why domain sales are way up with .ORG names, because it's no longer viewed as a charity ghetto and is instead an "emerging market" for all digital and online service-based companies.

Requires.org is blockchain ?
While a database requires a central authority to maintain and manage data, blockchain offers a decentralized approach to storage and verification of data.

Walmart Requires Blockchain Use From Its Greens Suppliers...

Absolutely Yes IMO, I have sold far more .orgs than .net, I quit messing with .net years ago, I sold acure.org for $625, but, I was also able to negotiate a 2.5% vest in the buyers non profit organization, which is a fight for the cure of breast cancer, so yes, .org, the sale shows on godaddy appraisal thingy, the organization is now an actual fully ran office with employees and is affiliated with the Susan G Koeman cancer center

For me .org feels more ”genuine” in a way. .Net feel more like a much worse and cheaper version of .com.

.Net also feels like it is competing more with the new gTLDs. It has suffered a lot since all those were released.

I personally see that .org is better than .net especially in terms of branding.

.ORG if you are using it as non-commercial, informative, public-oriented site, example: donations, community work, etc.
.NET if you are using it as tech related site, example: tech blog, hosting, online reviews, ratings, affiliate sites.

If you use in specific TLD in the manner for which it is intended, then that domain will have more value. Example: Donate.org will have more value than Donate.net, but Tech.net or Hosting.net will have more value than Hosting.org domain!

.org is way more valuable. .Net is .com's sidechick that nobody wants to marry.

.org for me. Hold your good .org with patience. Just sold one again for close to mid 4 figures through afternic (Will report soon on sales thread). Haven't sold a .net in a while but I hold some dictionary word .net which I am patiently holding. Price your .net moderately and it surely would sell same with .org which I like to price higher with confidence when I know who my targets are. Good luck everyone.

there are few topics concerned with dot org.

net is good for hacks and tech domains like ten.net. I don't think org will overtake .net in high $ sales. Org is generally for people that want to raise money and they won't pay a lot. Org is extra popular from the crypto rush...people resort to beging you to buy their blockchain.
