I have to be honest since Kevin Fink left Flippa, I have not spent a ton of time there, looking at a domain auction that stood out once in awhile. I had a friend who wanted to list a business for sale and told me he wanted to use Flippa. While on the site checking out the price for business listings, I noticed a couple days ago Flippa changed their pricing. It will now cost $25 to list a … [Read more...]

The domain name listing fees $ 25 is really horrible. The major marketplaces like Sedo, Afternic etc charge nothing for listing. But Flippa just going on increasing the listing fee, $ 5,, $ 9 and now $ 25.

The message they want to convey is crystal clear, look we do not entertain junks anymore, if your domain name is worth in hundreds of dollars, come to us, otherwise get lost.

Actually a direct auction at sedo costs $59. It’s free to just list your domains for make offer and buy it now at those places but not free to auction them. I should add that’s it’s still free to list your domains the same way of flippa. I’m not sure if they still call it “catalogue” or “portfolio”

The sedo Direct auctions suck. Many times not even a bid. Godaddy auctions are also horrible. Flippa was great for auctioning domains, but changes to the platform and now changes to the listing fees have ruined what it once was. My first year using flippa was great, sold close to $75,000 with great ROI.. but the change in structure and their partnerships with other brokerage companies reduced exposure for domain auctions, even promoted auctions were getting bumped out of sight quickly.. when I first started purchasing their upgrades, a homepage upgrade would showcase my listing for at least 24hrs.. now lucky to have it up there for a couple hours..

Yeah but with Sedo you can list for free, if you get an offer you can push to full auction for free as well (only pay fees on success.) Same with GD. Receive offer, push to auction for free. I believe you only pay GD the $5 yearly fee to access auctions. Just a heads up in case some don't know :)

You can do the same at flippa.. and how many offers does one really get with sedo.. I have almost 1500 domains there and get maybe 1 or two offers a year. Also, it’s unlikely you’ll get anymore bids after sending something to auction.

I’m not defending flippa, I’m not gonna use them anymore. I’m simply pointing out the facts.

Can't blame them for that :)

I have way less names at Sedo and get more offers than that in a year... but as far as Flippa goes I did not know that. I thought you had the option of the basic free listing that was Offer / CO only and then everything else was paid just to list. If they had that option I've never seen it or heard of it before. They did a bad job of advertising it lol.

My experience at Flippa was mostly fake buyers / non-paying winners and heavy handed nonsense and poor support. Sounds like you were one of the lucky few.

You know when I visit sedo, I know it wont take time to go through the auctions list.
Flippa Im not brave enough, I stop at featured auctions.
$25 fee will bring quality and might yield higher % of sold domains which would be more revenue for them.
10$ listing fees with no sales not so interesting.

Flippa's biggest issue is that they are relying strictly on their in house Escrow service. Appears that the reviews are still bad. If they opened things up to altcoins and other payment forms they would do a lot more business. Restricting sellers to use only their escrow processor is a big turn off.

So even though I've given thousands to Flippa over the years, I've just been contacted with their inane id verification process.
They want me to go through same vetting process as AirBNB.
Hold my id next to my head and send it to them via wetransfer.
WeTransfer which is not that secure.
Completely absurd.
They've lost their minds. I'm selling the same smaller assets and there's no way they're getting my id and so much info.

Competition is always good. Let Flippa play with what they consider as improvements. Should it mean less business - they can always switch back to an old scheme. What they really need to do is to fight with spammers and other non-genuine stuff. I, for example, had to set custom email filters long ago, like this:
IF subject line contains "is for flip!" THEN delete the email.
(and a few other filters, as fellow domainers overspammed my email with their flippa listings).

The new pricing actually seems quite competitive, if it applies also to unlimited domain auctions. Would make sense that they start getting back lot of volume - actually the marketplace might even get flooded if it is $15/month + 10% success fee on unlimited domain auctions.

Their Escrow service running on Assembly Payments does not have proper money transmitter licenses and/or escrow licenses listed anywhere for the United States as far as I can tell. (I don't know about other Countries they operate in). The only state I know where they have a license recently is Texas and that's only after state of Texas fined them around 23k for NOT having any license.
I would caution anyone against doing significant business with an entity that is not properly licensed in their state.
Paypal, Escrow.com and Google Payments all have the proper licenses, but it appears that Flippa Escrow wants to make everyone adhere to KYC while not carrying out their own obligations.
