I'd be interested in what people think of the hyphen. Is it always a killer in the days of Google searches?

Limited sales numbers for hyphen domains and consumers are less inclined to type in a hyphen in a domain. Gives free traffic to the non-hyphen domain.

Unless it is premium, high-quality and desirable name it's waste of time and money to reg/buy one.

I just renewed a hyphenated .net

Wont be renewing my hyphenated .biz

crypto-cash.com 7,895 USD 2018-03-09 Sedo good ones sell

Also depends on other factors like is the non hyphenated version developed or parked, and value of keywords

@Michael would you be able to display a list of hyphenated domain sales?

Tried finding that feature on www.namebio.com

Many thanks kunkka, this why namepros is the best.
I see 7 hyphenated .net sales this month
.biz zero
.info two sales this month (spammish looking)
.org nine hyphen sales half way thru the month
No reported hyphen .xyz sales ever :xf.eek:

Money is there, not a lot but they sell and dropcatch seems to be the winner in selling them.

dynamic-designs.com 1,700 USD 2018-04-10 BuyDomains
The non hyphenated version dynamicdesigns/com reg 1997 parked/privacy

From purely SEO perspective, since you talk about Google, there is no difference - hyphen or not. Only user experience gets hurt.

Although in some countries, like Germany, noone gives a damn about hyphens and lots and lots of businesses use domains with them.

Is something like crypto-coins.cc worth registering? I'm assuming the extension also kills the value of a hyphenated domain? I see some decent hyphenated alternatives..

It is the risk that you must be prepared to take.
The crypto niche domains are hot at this time and you may be able to sell it. If the keywords are strong you have more chance. Crypto & coins are both strong and in example you mentioned they fit together and make your domain easier to sell. Another problem is extension but it is more likely to sell despite the extension if you have strong keywords.
As Golan mentioned - if you have a hyphened .de domain you should not be worried because it does not matter. :sneaky:
And you can take a look to @Federers recent sales in the 'Completed domain sales' thread since he reported decent amount of hyphenated domain sales.

That's what this whole game is about isn't it? Risk. And it adds up quick, which is why I think this thread is important. There are a lot of premiums out there waiting to be molested with a hyphen and it could be costly for the unsuspecting newbie. The .de tip is interesting.

Agree, but hyphened domain is multiplied risk.
I believe most of members here made a mistake - bought/regged hyphened domain and learned something on the hard way.

Mercedes-Benz.com is worth more than MercedesBenz.com

Hyphens can definitely have a higher value in the right circumstances. If you have two distinct entities then a hyphenated domain makes sense. In the case of Mercedes-Benz it was a merging of two companies and the automotive division retained that name while the parent company is using Gottlieb.

I don't own any hyphenated domains but I'm not against them when used properly.

I own 1 that is a 4C L-LL .com with meaning, I'm optimistic it'll sell.

I have home-interiors and looking to sell. But I guess there’s less interest or maybe I should wait. It’s a dot com by the way.

Divide sale price by 10, probability of selling by 10.
Can be more or less. Depends on keywords.
Germans seem to like hypen.
Google doesn't seem to like it, or US people don't like it.

One of few .com's I sold had a hypen. It might be my higest .com sale (or maybe the second),
and about 1 percent of my highest .biz sale.

Sometimes nonhypen and hypen version sell for the same price.
Of course if the hypen is not in the right place, it can kill a keyword.

I have nonhypenated versions of domains of some professional sites,
and they are totally uninterested in buying my domain.
They don't even bother saying we are not interested.

Hypen is not always bad. Sometimes it separates words which may be hard to separate
otherwise.

casino : 10M
onlinecasino: 1M
online-casino: 100K
on-line-casino: 10K
on-linecasino : 0

For plurals divide by 2.

just my own valuation.

But fair value itself doesn't say much.
If it won't sell, then real price is zero.
Probabilty of selling makes extreme difference, for average quality domains.

"There are a lot of premiums out there waiting to be molested with a hyphen" is the kind of succinct expression that wii assure I'm never tempted to acquire one. Thanks.
