Checked whois and while it used to mention it is in redemption period before I bought it, now it is 'client transfer prohibited'. Also the updated date is at the time of my purchase.

Am I the new owner yet or can its owner still renew it before it hits my account?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
it basically depends where it was registered before

then the answer is no. its yours now.

they can transfer/renew a gd regged name for up to 30 days past expiry.. so round 3-4 days into auction

even with bids placed

after that.. if bid placed.. it gets locked by gd waiting auction end.

for non gd regged names its different. as gd cannot locked those names when there are bids placed. so you are at mercy of previous owner if he'll renew or not. typically he has til auction end + 12-24hours after it... to renew. cause thats more or less when gd goes to get it from other registrar and transfers it to new owner.

enjoy

Problem is they still haven't updated the expiry date on whois, that's why I had my doubts. Anyway, my GD auctions 'won' list says I should receive it in 4 days so I guess that's when the expiry date is going to be updated. It is a 5 yo name so I would have been gutted if it got renewed as I don't see any reason for it not to. Thanks @alcy!

yeah I wouldn't worry about whois updates.. not even worth looking

like I Said bottom line is if name was regged b4 at gd.. then they lock it on day -30 past expiry IF there is a bid.

auctions begin usually on day -26.

its a totally diff story if name regged elsewhere.

cheers

It's alright I found the answer here, many NPers are happy to help, you know. It is also good to have it answered here as there are many other beginners on this forum. Thanks anyway.

Obvious question that has been answered a dozen times. If you sign up for a auction, it's normal to read the basic terms and rules before buying.

Guess I'm not smart then.

Edit: thanks for editing your post.
