NEW YORK, NY – Back in April of 1996, Dane Madsen registered YellowPages.com, an idea that popped into his mind after being demanded to come up with ad-copy for one of his firms clients, Sprint, who was rushing to be included in the next issue of the print Yellow Pages book; back then if you missed the deadline, you needed to wait an entire year for your business to seemingly exist. https://www.strategicrevenue.com/fr...pages-com-the-smartest-domain-name-grab-ever/

A little bit thin on the ground. But got the basic facts. The original cost is real. But the $100M valuation includes all the assets etc of a business worth $100M. The article carefully points out this increase included several ownership changes, mostly by huge telecom companies :) I wonder how much the original owners made from their registration? It's probably still a good ROA, but less than the headline implied :)

The purchase price included the entire business. 100 million. Wikipedia has it at 120 million, but according to the owner, it was 100 million, maybe 120 was a second purchase, and then it was gobbled up for 68 billion I believed but that was part of a larger purchase of a consolidated group of assets.

It's not the domain, it's the business that is worth the money. YellowPages.com would be worth naff all without the business imho
