analysis What's the Deal with Christmas.com?

NameSilo
With Christmas in just forty-one days, consumer activity in preparation for the big day is increasing day by day. Estimates show that spending in the USA for Christmas tops $1 trillion, with much of that spending taking place online. One of the most obvious type-in destinations for Christmas shoppers online would be the Christmas.com domain name, with Alexa showing a significant rise in traffic every December.

Last Christmas, visitors to Christmas.com were presented with a developed website offering a number of Christmas services including family pages, wish lists and games. A Canadian company called Left took over the development of the name in 2012, but it seems that plans for Christmas.com may have changed within the past year.

Recently, Christmas.com has started to display content for Christmas Central, an online supplier of Christmas decorations based in New York. As of writing, Christmas.com essentially displays a full page ad for Christmas Central, with links to the company's website. This is instead of the domain name redirecting to ChristmasCentral.com.

So what has happened to the domain? Has Christmas.com been sold to Christmas Central? We have asked for clarification on the domain's situation from all parties. Given the domain's WHOIS listing, a sale seems an unlikely scenario. The domain remains under privacy protection at Fabulous.com, as it has done for many years. The nameserver changed earlier this year, hosting this new ChristmasCentral.com page at DreamHost.

Due to silence from all parties involved, it's entirely uncertain as to what type of deal has been agreed upon. It may be that the domain name has been leased to Christmas Central for a temporary basis to take advantage of the traffic.

The links currently displayed on Christmas.com don't seem to contain any affiliate links, simply direct links to Christmas Central.

Have Christmas Central purchased Christmas.com, or is there a lease agreement in place to take advantage of the type in traffic over the festive period?

Probably a flat rate advertising deal.

Yep, lease for sure. It would be interesting to know the details...is it a flat monthly rate, a commissioned base rate or a combo of both.

I just saw a commercial for some sort of gizmo that is supposed to fix your Christmas lights (???). For a moment or two, in the bottom right corner of the screen was "Christmas.com", but they didn't even mention it.

I'm doubting Christmas Central bought it. If they had the money and smarts to buy it, they would probably also have a competent webmaster or SEO guy that know a redirect to the website would work better than this current set up

this is probably the most useless use of the super domain I've seen

I just saw the commercial for the Christmas light fixer thing again and this time Christmas.com was displayed in the bottom right corner for almost the entire length of the commercial.

alos, in the previous commercial it looked like it was added as an afterthought and looked grainy. This time it was done correctly and looked like it was meant to be there.
