The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It may be difficult. Expiring domain names with inbound links are often shifted to auction by their registrars (not registrants) before they expire. There are hundreds of millions of domain names in the gTLDs that have expired and have not been reregistered. Expired domain names that have been gone through the drop process and have been deleted are typically available for reregistration.

Your advantage is that the majority of domainers believe that they are. The only thing left, the hard work.

You have to work at it on expireddomains.net bid before they drop.
Use Moz or Majestics one a day free look up, but it's not that accurate since some people like me block them. Sign up for kwfinder (I have no affiliation) , and use their backlink checker and click on existing follow links it finds and examine if they still exist, their credibility. Sure they get gobbled up, but I have bought many and 301'ed, but income from them is a completely different story.

If you are buying for PBN's

The question is, how would you count the traffic before the domain is in your hosting account? You can only guesstimate it based on different SEO metrics. But they also can give a wrong picture.

Usually, Semrush, Similarweb, and Alexa are best for a traffic guesstimate. The more consistent picture of metrics you have, the higher the chance the domain is good.

But again, the SEO quality of a domain doesn't guarantee traffic either.

For sure there are some, but gih metrics = high price
example in the screenshot: europarchiv.org >>> sold $3384 (for its high seo metrics)

good luck :)

The reason I ask, guys, is because I am able to make a bot which can scrape high view count youtube videos and return to me links which give a 404, meaning unregistered domains.

The idea is it might be possible to find some trafficked ones this way and monetize them either via redirection or a landing page.

Hence the question. Do you think all the ones worth the while have been caught by dropcatchers?

Yeah, all are taken, no need to spend more time on this..
Now, let me do some youtube scrapping :)

On a more serious note,
better try yourself and see if it works instead of asking the opinion of randoms imo (no offence intended to all trying to help of course).

the best way to know that is :
1) to scrape all domains, a sample of at least 100K would be nice
2) check if some of them are in pending delete or redemption
3) list them all and wait for about 10 domains to expire, count how many are catched and available.

then decide to backorder or not for nexts domains.

If you have the right connections and enough money, it's possible to purchase lists of top NXDOMAIN queries from companies that provide recursive, non-authoritative DNS resolvers, particularly residential ISPs. Not all entries on the lists will be available for registration, but a good chunk of them will be. Some may never have existed; others may have expired.

This is a topic that I am early in my learning curve, but thank the great information in this thread. A particular shout out to the sage comments from @jmcc, the helpful link from @offthehandle, and the great table and comments from @golan.

My broader question (perhaps simplistic) is why does it matter much? Surely except for some domains with recently tarnished past, or when you want to use the domain for a very similar purpose, beyond that backlinks and traffic are much less important than the inherent quality of the name. Let me give a purely hypothetical case to explain my reasoning.

Suppose someone had the domain name DailyFindingRealGemsForYou and despite the long name they put huge work into it and found all the best domain names that were available for less than $50. Because they put so much work into it, and they had a lot of respect in community, it was a go to site and got huge stats and hundreds of domainers backlinked to it.

Now all of that matters if, but only if, I am wanting to essentially continue that reference site. In which case it is not a domain sale but a site sale really.

But lets say I am wanting to set up a site to find the best art deals, or RVs for sale, or great but inexpensive works of art, or whatever. The existing links and traffic mean zero. If I am buying the domain name for links/traffic matters really I am just wanting to benefit from others work not unlike TM infringement or using a persons name (well marginally more accepted).

Inherently the name is imho ugly - too long and too ordinary. Aesthetically pleasing memorable names, like Finds or Gems or HiddenGems or whatever far more inherent value as a domain name, even if they had 0 existing links and traffic.

So if you are not selling a business, but just a domain name, why are traffic/links important?

Bob

domains traffic could be monetized.

The question is not how much traffic, but what kind of traffic.
If you have massive but low-quality traffic that does not convert, you will be only wasting bandwidth.
I don't have a trick to extrapolate revenue.

it is very difficult, youre not the only one looking for it, there is thousands of people looking for the very same thing...

I wasn't goinf to sell the domains; I'm not a domainer. I was just going to monetize the traffic coming to those YT videos.

So the conclusion is it's not worth the time and effort because all domains with good traffic are contested?

No you can find domains with decent backlinks, but might cost $$$.
Who is going to pay you? How do you monetize someone elses videos on youtube? This does not make sense. I have xx,xxx youtube videos on a site, and it does not even cover hosting. I have been scraped by google and they use the keyword data info to rank the authors videos based on my research and work. But the plugin does the posting. Ime, Total waste of time to try and monetize, google wont as its someone elses video and Amazon links maybe if you invest hundreds of hours scraping, spinng or writing original copy. This is a hobby site so does not matter.

Dude, I want to find expired domains links on youtube videos (description, pinned comment) which get a lot of views. I would reg those domains and monetize them in whichever way.

You intend to scrape youtube videos for 404’s based on embedded links in existing videos?
Hope that works out, you might have some success. Best of luck, post your results in a few months, I might buy some if you intend to sell.

Yes, that's what I intend to do. Hence the question: Are all good expired domains taken or might it be possible to find something good this way?

Very interesting idea. As @offthehandle said, let us know when you have some results as I too may be interested in purchasing some if it all works well.

I might even sell the software itself, I just have to find out whether it would be possible to find good domains like this or not.

Why waste your time and scrape youtube videos to find expired domains?

jump to expireddomains.net you will find all deleted domains sitting there (create free account to see all lists).. they even have archive for all deleted domains since 2010 or even before.

The thing is no domain get deleted without going into expireddomains.net because they use released deleted lists from Verisign.

Verisign is like the main domains distributor where big sites like Godaddy are resellers to them.

You don't get it. I intend to find youtube videos with high views counts, meaning they get traffic. Therefore, the expired domains in their description might be getting traffic.

This is for internet marketing purposes, not domaining. The value of the domain names themselves is irrelevant.
