so I was looking for hologram3d.com to see if it is available, it was available but as usual when a good name is available it will be a premium domain, guess how much it costs...
$57,500

OMG.. really????

Domain registrars are very greedy and they are killing domains market, the prices of premium domains are just crazy! There are millions of good domain names not registered and nobody touches them because they are premium names, leaving new businesses and websites with less quality alternative names.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
That one is not reserved. Only some one letter .com domains are reserved.

If you search a .com and it's priced, it only means it is registered and put up for sale with a BIN.

It’s not a premium domain, it’s owned by someone else.

On the contrary, the higher they price premiums, the more we stand to sell ours at decent prices.

Actually I found it listed on Sedo!
https://sedo.com/search/details/?domain=hologram3d.com

So it is not premium domain, how name.com puts "Permium" label on it and you can just "Add to cart"? I dont understand do they pay to Sedo later?

Premium is meaningless. I have crap domains for sale that platforms have labelled premium.

I think there is a confusion here the domain is not "preserved" premium name it is just listed on Sedo for sale, and because name.com is affiliated with Sedo MLS it shows it as premium.

If it was a preserved premium name then the renew will not be $12.99

This whole thread has shown how confusing the term is. The combination of services like the Afternic network inserting domains for sale in registrar search results, along with adding the term premium, causes confusion as people wrongly assume they are registry premium (of course some of them may also be that!).

I wish that we simply dropped the word premium entirely it has become used in so many different senses. Of course I wish for a lot of things that don't happen? :xf.grin:

I would suggest that we should instead of premium have a term only for domains that carry a non-standard renewal fee and all such domains should need to carry that designation (whether a country code or new extensions or legacy alternate extensions or if Verisign gets its seeming hope legacy extensions). All such domains should carry the term Extra Renewal Fee.

Instead of premium, perhaps the domain name could come up with a set of descriptors with agreed discussion about what each would mean. But that would be tough! :xf.eek:

Just my 6 am thoughts! Have a wonderful day everyone.

my rule of thumb is > if, you got to label it as premium, then it ain't premium.

but, at least it was just Premium

could have been anti-premium > ala 3char rating back in the day
or
quad premium > memba these
triple premium
double premium
or even
premium unleaded

for whatever you need to fill your tank

:)

I believe I answered to the OP's frustration in the first reply, so there should be no confusion. Now the thread is going in a different direction.

Verisign only reserves a handful of names, some .com / .tv / .gov etc. Eg. example.com

It is more and more common with nTLDs though, actually to a point where it's getting ridiculous, with high renewals as well.

So basically, the domain that the OP was concerned about were actually labeled a premium name because seller put it for sale through Sedo (mls). It is not reserved, just registered by someone else.

So anyone can do that, but each and one of us should know the difference. And with a simple whois check, you will find out.

While you are totally right @BrandsOpen that your answer clearly and completely dealt with the specific OP initial question re that domain.

I think the title chosen for the thread, however, suggests a more general discussion on premium domain names (it literally says they are killing the domain market). It seems not inappropriate to discuss the more general question of which domain names should be called premium, what that means, and whether that is bad or good for the aftermarket.

Just my opinion. Totally respect that others are reasonable.

I didn't even know unreleased .coms (or any top level TLDs) were sold at premium prices except some of the single letters that haven't been released. I always thought this was the scam provided by the second level providers – first year 69.95, renewal fee $7k LOL.

MY FAVORITE is www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz for $60,000 a year. SMH
These ridiculous prices make purchasing a top-level domain at resale value more enticing.

It can get worse. I recently tried to register a domain that showed up as premium while it was actually unregistered.

I checked afternic and someone had it listed and probably forgot to remove it after it dropped.

I wonder what would've happened if I bought it instead of getting it delisted by afternic before ordering.

Yes I am surprised how many domains get left on marketplaces after the owner has let them drop.

Each marketplace should have a simple form, that you don't need an account for, that allows you to report domains that you own that someone has listed there (as well as other issues).

Imo, people should stop whining so much about prices.

If you want good domain name, open your wallet .... you have to pay for it!

Or be an early adopter or something. Just do not expect that fabulous domain name will be sitting there, unregistered for years, just waiting for you to be taken for USD 10 :)
