I have a small portfolio of mainly .co.uk domains that are currently estimated by estibot at around $200000
I understand that estibot under values domains if anything but I think that at least some of my domains are excessively over valued.
How do I get a realistic valuation of my portfolio without laying out too much money upfront.
Sedo valued a couple of them but came back with a similar valuation as estibot so I am not too keen on using them again.
I would be grateful for any head up on this and thanks for checking this out.

You put them up for sale and you wait. If your names are good, end users will find you. But you'll still have to be (very) patient.
Appraisals don't mean much in general, they are flawed and do not reflect the likelihood of a sale.

Numerology is unimportant. What is important is to pick names that other people would want - badly.

Numerology can help you pick names other people want :xf.smile:... 888888.com is more valuable than 324714.com. While I agree with you that appraisals are far from perfect I am confident that if you took 1000 domains with GD appraisals of $3k+ and priced them the same as 1000 names with GD appraisals of < $1.5k you would sell more of the $3k names. The exception would be 4 letter, numeric and other liquid domains as GoDaddy often seems to appraise these with high wholesale/hobbyist prices (often $xxx for 4Ls) rather than the retail prices they assign to keyword and brandable names...

Thank you so much for that insight, guys.
I have listed some of them on Sedo, uniregistry, afternic and Efty.
Are there any other I should register with or am good to go for now ?
I was also considering using one of those cheap reseller hosting accounts from somewhere like webhostingtalk and run the sites on a wordpress for sale theme or plugin.
Does that make sense to you?
Cheers

How much is a sale worth in the industry that the domain covers?
How much profit margin on each sale in the industry the domain covers?
How good is the domain compared to available alternatives?
How much advertising $ is spent on the category of the domain? Are they spending .25 or $10.00 for clicks through google?
Who is the buyer? Start up with funding or mom/pop struggling?
How bad do ya need the sale?

Domainer A can buy a domain for $10-$100 and sell at the first $500 offer.
Domainer B can buy the same domain for $10-$100 analyze the market and rot on the gems until the "right" buyer presents themselves and sell for thousands or never sell.
So it's a combo of how strong is the market the domain covers, how strong is the domain, how bad do you need the income?
No automated tool will predict this as automation is easy. Easy doesn't yield maximum income potential.
Answer those questions like you were the buyer and you can formulate a ballpark of value.

Buy the best domains you can find, get them in distribution paths afternic, sedo, your own site, etc...
Offers generally flow to quality domains so not uncommon for a handful of your domains to receive the majority of offers. Okay to sell okay domains cheaper but be sure to ring the register on the gems as those aren't replaced as easily in 2018 as they were in 2003 so replacement value needs to enter the equation as well.

Last domain I sold I sold for...

$10,593 above the GoDaddy appraisal
$14,000 above the Estibot appraisal

Lots of good advice already offered. As others have said, it depends on the types of domain how well Estibot do - they seem to do much better with single word than double, and of course with brandable made up words Estibot is of no help.

I guess what additional you do depends on the purpose for the valuation.
  1. Is it to give you confidence regarding your pricing of the domain names?
  2. Is it to help justify your prices to potential end users? If so GoValue may be helpful to at least know the values and use them when advantageous or if the end user asks.
  3. Is it for some other purpose?
Given that they are .co.uk, I would think the best evaluation would be a broker or long term domainer that worked mainly in that space. Have no idea what they would charge for a valuation.

You seem to have the main venues covered. I would also consider Undeveloped as an option with great response, competitive commissions, and seem to be moving up in the world of domain marketplaces.

I am grateful for all the replies.so much good information, awesome
I am also looking at some short term cash income so I have looked at a few auction sites.
they seem to vary a lot just like the estimating bots. estibot hugely differs from Go Value in the valuation generated.at least that`s my experience with them.
What sites would you recommend to auction a few of my domains & what duration would yield the best result for the auction or does that actually makes any difference?
Thanks again.

This is one of the more succinct and clear listing of the main considerations I have seen. Thank you @SpareDomains !

I would just add two possible points:
Is the niche trending up or down or relatively constant?
How do my annual costs compare to parking/etc annual revenue (how patient to be)?

Thanks guys.
Are there a list of tools including software or specialist sites to use to improve the evaluation accuracy.the metrics discussed in this thread are clearly checked regularly to maximise margins
Sharing anything that is not too much of a trade secret would be hugely appreciated.

Once upon a time, I owned the domain name MovingAndStorageDatabase.com. Everyone laughed at me because it was long and the best valuation I received was under $25.00. Well, I made a website with a form to collect moving leads and sold them to moving companies and I made about $400.00 a day simply selling the leads. I held the domain and made a good living from this domain name. I did not care if I had return customers, with moving I knew I wouldn't. I eventually sold the domain name to a large moving broker. The point being, I made more money off of this horrible domain name that had no value than all of the domain names I've owned over the years put together. A valuation is a marker, but your imagination and ability to look at the big picture could be more profitable.

Karen, I love your story. It shows that meaning and demand can be as important as length, etc. Would you ever consider telling your story with a bit more detail? It would be an excellent case study.

Chris, I would be more than happy to do that.

Thanks guys.hugely appreciate all your advice & suggestions.
I wanted to auction some of my domains & wondered if there are any suggestions on which auctions to use and if there are preferred timing to enter them.
Most of the domains for auctioning are .co.uk
