The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
For your own web site you can use google analytic. if you want to learn more your competitors you can request: link:domain.com

Google Analytics doesnt' tell you anything about backlinks. Google Search Console shows you a small sample of them. Link:will find links, it doesn't tell you anything helpful.

For checking competitors, It must be Ahrefs and Screaming Frog (there're many other tools but I like using Ahrefs the most)

For internal, just GSC.

???
Screaming frog won’t show competitor backlinks unless you link it to the API for one of the backlink tools (majestic, ahrefs, ose ...)

Ahrefs.com
SEO Spyglass
Majestic SEO

For your own backlinks you can use Google Search Console.
For other people backlinks you can use Majestic SEO and Moz

GSC shows you virtually nothing, just a small sample. You need an external tool to see the big picture.

Ahref is the best tool but the thing is that it is a paid one. You can also try smallseotools as well.

SEM Rush or Back link watch

Folks - if you're going to participate in a thread like this, at least give us your own 2 cents WHY a certain paid tool is, in your opinion, the best. Just listing products isn't helpful to anyone and is bordering on spam.

Hello,

According to me the best way to check backlink of the website is url:www(.)domain(.)com .
It's simple and free. the other one is backlinkwatch(.)com

Really interesting that 3 people in this thread list an amateurish, awkward to use site which is crawling with ads.
Stick to ahrefs, makestic or Moz. Majestic is free for your own sites.

linkody.com is good for me.
You can integtate it with your search console to discover all your links (links detected by linkody + links detected by search console)

But you've not backlinks with link:sitename.com
Guys, if you want a complete list of your backlinks you have to PAY and use a professional software.

I apologize...that tip was so "2000" (outdated)

https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2466433?hl=en

But you've not backlinks with link:sitename.com
.
You are correct about "link:sitename.com"

KWFinder has (3) tools. One is backlink listings under their SEO tools. $25 a month.

One thing I dont see mentioned is that these expensive paid services assume dumb website owners. smart owners who use wordpress websites, ban backlink scrapper bots like stupid ahrefs, majestic, moz, etc. StopBadBots plugin has a huge ban database. Keep all your links hidden. So you can hide all your backlinks from bots, many from france, germany and other EU ip addresses. Find their IP’s and put them in .htacess if running linux. Use free country blocking IP addresses and deny them in the .htacess. Screw letting competitors know your backlinks. I distrust webmaster tools by Google, if your site is worthwhile you dont need to tell Google where it is. The googlebot will find it, even if it is lame one page.

Most website owners don't block those crawlers because they have nothing to hide and don't care if anyone knows who they link to.

Screw letting competitors know your backlinks.

If you block those tools they can still see who links to YOU, they just won't archive who you are linking out to.*

Webmaster tools doesn't give you all of your backlinks, just a sampling. As far as trusting it, it just enables you to see information they already have about you - there's no script to collect additional data like Analytics. It's a great troubleshooting tool and fetch and render is the fastest way to get a page indexed.

Of course if you're concerned about Google "footprinting" sites you own for some reason (like a PBN), then you need to be careful with that...

*(And I could find that out very easily with any tool where I can spoof the user agent...)

Depending on your site, and your own goals. Well hiding backlinks can be crucial to not allowing competitors to copy them, like trusted vertical market directories to startup marketers. These scrapers are why the internet has become a polluted, copycat world. Spinning content, etc. barrier to entry is so low now.

Google used a large 300,000 record database on one site I owned to rank, stealing my human intelligence to rank their own database so before I knew it, and they never indexed it. Chewed the site up and spit it out. They are the enemy, and are blocked now. Marketing is separated now.

There are several famous veritcal market ads/directories I know that existed years and years before Google, they block all bots. Its word of mouth and market knowledge. They dont rank, they dont care, they are not even indexed. They existed before we got to this stupid google search monopoly. The reasoning was scraping that occurred in the past. “Theft” of data by Google, the largest scraper in the world.

Nothing is foolproof. Sure there are ways to get around all this with spoofing or manual. Best thing to prevent are entire blocks of bad neighborhoods like AWS, is full of scummy scraper VPS’s and entire countries of no value to becoming a customer. Blocking entire strings prevents some, sure if you have a rogue VPS at home you can sneak in.

PBN’s still work, but expensive and a pain to maintain for my use, but a great way to rank if you invest in them, and if you do things correctly you can Bypass Googles filters. I am not going into further details for free. Btw, I have confirmed several popular sites who block Majestic in this domain industry.

You mean hiding outbound / external links. Backlinks are inbound links.

Yes, if you have proprietary data (links or otherwise) that you don’t want scraped, you either block a lot of things or put it behind a login.

I prefer the Majestic Seo tool because it is the best tool to show a real result.
