I often see much less 'marketable' names listing on auctions with high amounts of traffic/views/bids compared to featured domains with all the advertising bells & whistles attached gaining little to no traction to their listing, even if (In my opinion) it is a much better name overall.

What gives? Is there a secret sauce to get eyes on your domain or is it just luck of the draw?

Let me know if social media is part of your research.

Great question by the way

Oh, the investigations never stop my friend :xf.wink:

It basically boils down to three main factors:
  • Marketing
  • Promotion (Investment or organic)
  • Quality names
That's the general gist I'm getting, promotion is king and there are a couple of services that provide free exposure. However, most are paid services provided by marketplaces or bloggers.

I suppose if I truly have belief in the domain, the extra investment will pay out in dividends

Spend :greedy: to make :greedy::greedy::greedy: I suppose.

First of all, thanks! My hunger for knowledge is never satisfied :xf.grin:

Secondly, that's certainly part of it. If you have or know someone with a large following it only makes sense to divert attention to your listings. Another big factor is cross-platform promotion, both of which I've yet to try out.

There's probably more information out there that I've yet to discover but, like with all things, I'm sure that'll come with patience, experimentation and experience.

I remember I promoted one of my domain to sell out one of of the domain market place which is very well known. I even promoted on Adwords. But I believe its some times your luck and sometimes your hardwork to sell it and deal with a good buyer.

Hi

I think quality is king, and really the only factor that counts in the end.
as the goal of the buyer, is to acquire the best domain within their budget.

to me, it's better to spend the money to buy a quality domain, than it is to purchase low quality and spend time and money trying to market and promote it.

exposure can help put the name in front of more eyes, but "featured" listings are mostly profit centers for the platform.

still, having a persona` as a blogger, pod dude, celeb seller, etc, etc in domain world, can put them in position to sell more names, simply because more people follow what they say and do.

and..... do to their popularity, some assumption is made about the quality of their domains, whether true or false, just because "they" own them.

there is some psychology in the game, and many know how to play it
and some play it on themselves, and don't even realize

the deal is, not to get caught up in it.

:)

imo….

I gottcha, the best domains practically market themselves.
Show, rather than tell.

My understanding is that marketing/promotion is almost essential for the domains that aren't the absolute top 1% crème de la crème.

For domains valued at 3-(low-mid)4 figures any extra exposure is valuable when the domain isn't completely able to sell on its own merit (not a bad name, nor an excellent one).

I believe that middle of the road domains is very much valuable under the right conditions, however, I agree if you own a premium domain, most of the work is done for you.

That's just my $0.2 :joyful:

the best domains, speak for themselves....

so no marketing is necessary.

also, a name doesn't have to be in the top 1% crème of the crop.

whether buyer is seeking a LLL.org for their organization, a "roofing" related domain or something with "studio" in it, etc, etc.

it only has to be a quality domain within the category, that any potential buyer is looking for.

the trick is acquiring domains in categories, that eventually...will attract the right buyers.

Good quality name+ targeted exposure = profit

A premium name will get traffic from interested parties/ type-ins organically. If you're selling a name via auction...paying for advertisement through highly targeted domain websites like NameBio.com will optimize your exposure and potential for profit.

By premium I mean .com names that are worth more than $1000 wholesale and categorized in a relevant niche.
