"Category killer" is a overused term (especially here).

It is if you get design.agency or marketing.agency for 1 usd but unfortunately, all are priced at premium so these are not a category killer's!

Designer.agency is not a category killer domain. The term "designer agency" is basically nothing.
Even Design.agency might be a good domain but I would not call it a category killer either.

Its possible, but you need to be looking at the drops. I've picked up about a dozen over the last few months for $5 or less that I'm pretty high on.

If you just want to use the excuse that everything good is premium priced or reserved then you will never find any. Get out there and hunt them down.

To me a category killer has to be the best, or one of the best, domains in a field that is actually a popular category.

Golf - Golf.com
Golf Clubs - GolfClubs.com

CheapPutters.com is not a category killer.

Beer - Beer.com
Craft Beer - CraftBeer.com

BuyCraftBeer.com is not a category killer.

The term is thrown around way to often. New extensions are rarely, if ever, going to be a category killer.

Sure ones like Real.Estate or something you can at least make an argument for, but most people are not holding that level domain.

You often have people say category killers for far too niche keywords like PinkLaptops.com. It might be a keyword domain but it is a niche, of a niche. That is not a category killer.

am I wrong in saying EMD could work if specific to the exact topic they search,

ex: chicagomodeling.agency - not mine

or am I way off topic ? i just seen .agency mentioned here

EMD domains, by themselves, are no longer a factor for Google search, and are mostly used now for the visual recognition and immediate recall by customers. i.e. the look good on an ad or business card and customers remember them.

Totally agreed! I was lucky as well in last few month, some good names dropped and I got them for few $...with low standard renewals..you can be sure they will not drop again anytime soon once I have my hands on them :)
