A Speculator? A Creator? A Developer? A Investor? A Artist? A Domainer? or none of the aforementioned? I'm about to register a couple of domain names that clarifies exactly who I am, and I'm proud of it. Having hand registered 1,500 domains in the last 12 months I've finally determined I'm a Domain Originator and not a a domainer (which still isn't a word btw). One would have thought that leaders in this industry would have clarified this by now?

Originator defined: a person who creates or initiates something.

Domainer
defined: No Definition....sad:xf.sick:

I've been creating names for businesses all my life, and it wasn't until recently that I started creating domain names. There's really little difference imho, and I feel I'm getting better at it every day.

So I'm a Domain Originator similar to a Mortgage Originator. I create internet domain names for .coms etc. I also recently originated the name DomainOrigination(.)com to coincide with DomainOriginator(.)com. Google shows that both Wiki and Investopedia have a page description for "Mortgage Originator" but none for Domainer or Domain Originator:xf.frown:

For those of you who create domains like me (keeping in mind every domain was created by someone), now you can proudly say you're a Domain Originator adding credibility to your profession:xf.wink:

If you create domains like me, share your profession with the world. I know I will.

Crappy domains:xf.rolleyes:? I think not, but what do I know....I'm just a newbie who hasn't a clue:xf.grin:

Cheers Everyone!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
My last comment on this thread is about the self...........or your's :xf.wink:

Self Promotion - the action of promoting or publicising oneself or one's activities, especially in a forceful way.

Self Delusion - the action of deluding oneself; failure to recognise reality.

Self Denial - the denial of one's own interests and needs

Self Fulfilling - bound to be proved correct or to come true as a result of behaviour caused by its being expressed.

Self Sacrifice - the giving up of one's own interests or wishes in order to help others or advance a cause

I'm originating self ego for myself.......

I think I fit in the “Self Delusion”

It is better in that world, Then I don’t have to run with a herd of turtles

MapleDots or MetBob...I do have a question that maybe you can help me with, and it's because I'm still learning...I just registered the name GamesWithNames(.)com about 3 hours ago. When I checked to see if it was previously owned here is what I found; http://www.hosterstats.com/historicaldns.php?domain=gameswithnames.com

It appears this name was bought and sold or changed hands five times since 2002. I think I know what to read into it, but what would you read into it? It's interesting that MakeSomethingHappen(.)com that I registered September 1, 2001 is valued at GD for almost $3,000, but GamesWithNames(.)com is valued at GD for $798. Why do you think the big disparity because I think GamesWithNames(.)com has a lot more potential for branding and or a business model than MakeSomethingHappen(.)com. I'd just appreciate your input. Thanks

I think the difference in valuation of Make Something Happen, Are direct match keywords as opposed to Games With Names, is not.

Although The Godaddy valuation appears to base a lot on “similar sales” I think it throws in extra bones $$ wise for direct, exact match keyword and it’s valuation of possible type in traffic, I may be wrong though, but it appears that way to me.

It's the same reason why a restaurant will go out of business in a strip mall and right away the next one will move in thinking they can do better. They go under and I shake my head as a third one goes into the exact same spot. I always ask myself why they would think they can make a go of it when the first two did not.

Kind of similar with that domain and godaddy is correct in pricing it lower.
As far as MakeSomethingHappen, unfortunately regardless of the godaddy tool I think it's too long to reap any big profits even in .com. MakeITHappen would be better.

Personally I don't think you can go too wrong registering catch phrases in .com (lets face it at 3 words you can call them phrases) but I sure would be taking the advice of some of the members here on the other TLD's. The new extensions do stand to make money but you need word.ext not mygreatword.ex

My advice.... stay focused on .com, your country code of origin, and ONE word extensions in the new stuff. These are your greatest odds at realizing a profit at the end of the year.

Thanks Addict. I'm not sure what you meant by "direct match key words" ? While I thing Games With Names is far more clever, the fact that Game(s) and Name(s) both end in an "s" does that make them not a keyword? Obviously "with" isn't a keyword so I can see that devaluing the name. I know this far from an exact science, and I appreciate your analysis.

And thank you MapleDots. I tend to agree with all you're saying, but I tend to wonder how the previous owners tried to sell or market their name. Personally, because of my business background and experience, I don't see this name selling through the likes of Sedo, Uniregistry, Estibot, Afternic etc. Like I've said, no end user that I know would ever accidentally find this name on any of their sites. Thus, if I wanted to get top dollar for it, I would need to be way more creative than the typical domainer. I can see Games with Names being as popular as the old game show Name that Tune. They're two similar names regardless of what anyone says. Thanks for your input MapleDots.

Direct match keywords are things you might type into google, for instance, "Ladies Watch" - Dog Flea Collar"

Games With Names is clever indeed, Many domain names such as this, have been sold for nice money, Mike Mann sold FiveStarApartments.com sold for $16,000.

Yes but that was for commercial use. Games with names sounds really good but what VIABLE commercial use can one put to it. Now before everyone tries remember that you can only register so many names so ask yourself if there are more viable names to make money on.

MapleDots...I know I can't be all things to all people, but my idea would be to develop Games with Names with a partner who shares my vision. The right partner could own 40 to 50% at first and eventually own the whole thing. I'll be 71 Saturday, and I could make it very interesting. The second option would be to start developing it, and sell it with a business plan to someone who gets it. Thanks(y)

I have seen you talk about hundreds of different projects here on NamePros.
You should actually follow through on one.

That is a bum deal. No one is going to put in time and effort when all you are putting in is some marginal hand reg domain. If someone actually wanted to do that type of project there are endless alternative domains.

It basically seems like you register a domain because you have an idea, then move on when you find another domain. In the meantime you have collected 1500+ domains with no buyers.

Keep in mind that everyone can register domain names, you assume someone will want to partner with a soso domain. If I was looking for a similar name for a project there are a hundred variables to reg for 10 bucks without taking on a partner.

Focus on business names or names that businesses would want to use for a service, those are the ones where the money is. There is no money in development of a name, there is only money if you truly run a business on a domain. Very rare are the high traffic domains where one can just sit and make money.

@bmugford makes a very good point, you will have to live to be 160 to bring all of your ideas to fruition. Focus on a few good ones and follow through, park the rest if they sell great, if not drop.

If you filter out all the comments people have directed at you and if you say even 5% were of substance then that substance was real advice. People are trying to guide you, not everyone wants you to fail. Personally I think every domaining success story is a plus for our industry and I truly wish you well but take at least some of the comments to heart, there is a lot of really good advice in some of them.

I think one thing that needs to be addressed that hasn't ,Don't buy to many names before you sell some names, harvesting domain inventory is very risky, many take it as " I only lose $8 if i end up dropping a name, X that by 300 or 400, and trying to capture a ROI is a VERY hard thing to do, Covering renewals is necessary, holding to much inventory without enough sales to cover expenses will lead to a very dark place.

The above was the first hard lesson in domaining for me, very painful. and damn near took me out, 2.7k in losses

MapleDots...you need to follow the same direction I just gave to Brad. You sir are a poor excuse for a Canadian. I can read between the lines, and what I read from you stinks to high heaven. Good night and God Bless...I'll say a prayer for you:xf.wink:

I'm kind of taken aback at your response especially since I was sincerely trying to give you the best advice from my years of experience.

I will not do like some of the others here and try to force my opinion on you because there are a lot of newer domainers on the forum that are seeking advice. I will check in on occasion and see how you are doing, and believe it or not I still wish you success. Will it happen, probably not because I have seen this scenario a hundred times over, but.... maybe you will surprise me.

Thanks Addict...I think Games with Names is "clever indeed too". And your not the only one who thinks so. The portfolio of domains that I've originated and registered is pretty incredible considering I have very little experience in this industry. Good luck with your domain origination, and God Bless you which ever God looks over you.

It took me 3 years after the 2.7K loss, to make a dime in the industry, The recovery period was not only painful, but very lonnnnnng. like i said above, it was very close to taking me out of domaining for good. that would have sucked really bad. It was a very - very close call for me.

Addict...I can afford to buy my own domains and pay a premium if I wanted to. The 12-15K that I've spent buying domains pales in comparison to the 2,000 plus hours I've spent learning this business. To insinuate that I don't know what I'm doing is an insult to my intelligence and my 50 plus years of practical business experience. I'm famous for saying, "I wasn't born yesterday", and it's a FACT that I was born 71 years ago on Saturday October 20th. Finally, I can assure you and anyone else reading this I understand ROI far better than anyone on this blog. Have a nice evening, and good luck with your spinning..

I started in 2002 and gave up about 7 years later before starting up again in 2010.
Same scenario, I bought thousands of domains and Hover.com was obliging me with free scripts to register as many as possible.

Little does @Bulloney know that we have actually been there, we have lived it. I lost tens of thousands before I ever made my money back. If I wished him harm I would encourage him to continue.

Sigh......

The reality is that you have been insulting people's intelligence since the day you joined. People that actually do buy and SELL domains. It's not insinuating when you yourself said that you're not selling any domains. It's not insinuating that you said you were going to drop 75%-80% of your domains, you said that. It's like a broken record with you talking about your past. How many times do you think you've posted that? So far that experience is not translating over to this business. Your ego is getting in the way.

It wasn't meant to insult you, I had no idea you had the capital you have, If a person has a good amount of capital, they can, of course, reg and buy as they wish, not everyone here is bringing a lot of capital when they start domaining.

I came in with $200 to invest in domains, i ended up overextending by a couple of more thousand dollars, huge mistake, perhaps this will help domainers on a low budget not overextend and wind up in the same shoes i was in.

Don't worry MapleDots...you'll never know it either. And thanks for acknowledging that you "will not do like some of the others here and try to force my opinion on you" Those words speak volumes, and I did tell you that I can read between the lines...in this case, I didn't need to read between the lines. I certainly don't need the likes of you or "some of the others" to be successful as a Domain Originator, or in life:xf.grin:

I felt your pain, It was like losing money in a casino and trying to make back my losses to break even, I figured out quick, there is no making back the losses, I had to completely start over, accept my loss as a lesson learned and move forward, I really didn't think i would recover, I was sure i was done.

Addict aka .X. aka John-from your Profile page. Also from your profile page;
"Since my beginning in the Domain Name Industry in 2003, My niche has been Domain Name Mining, My purpose is to find names that slip the cracks of auction houses and drop. I research, Inspect, And make sure each and every name i acquire is clean of blacklists and ready for it's repurpose. To meet the needs of my tasks. I use several different methods when mining for my domain names, I use a personal script to go mining for my names as well. I am not a domain name reseller, I develop and park the vast majority of my names.Usually two times a year i have the need to sell off some of my names that i have to cover expenses for my web developments and renewal fees of my portfolio."

I should do a little write up like you explaining the "niche" I'm carving out in this space. I like your style and your approach and plan on using some of it in the evolution of my domain business where I mainly "originate" domains, thus Domain Origination. Somehow or other, this name in conjunction with DomainOriginator(.)com seems to offend my critics, noting the domain firestorm from last night:xf.frown: Regardless of what they might think, I'm reasonably sure these names will be good for me and my business.

Moving on, much to the "chagrin" (i just luv that word) of some, I have in fact registered around 1,500 domains since coming on board here a little over a year ago. While it may seem I just randomly pick names with no rhyme or reason, nothing could be further from the truth. I've spent well over 2,000 hours, and maybe as many as 3,000 hours, eating, sleeping and breathing the domain name business.It's because of my business background that the vast majority of the names I register have a purpose behind them. For instance, I registered the following name just a few hours ago;

StartUpsInternational(.)com

Here is the history on it: http://www.hosterstats.com/historicaldns.phpdomain=startupsinternational.com Note, it was just dropped in August, 2018...btw, thanks to whoever provided the link to hosterstats(.)com. It's incredible(n). I guess that's what my critics mean when they say at least I should pick up some valuable information from their presence, and that's not the only thing I've picked up:xf.smile: That's why on occasion I thank them, and even pray for them. I don't think praying is illegal, and I tend to think we can all benefit from it. Moving on to how and why I registered the RescueDomain:xf.rolleyes:, StartUpsInternational.(.)com, I've renewed a relationship with a local university where I plan to be a guest lecturer about the Domain Industry. This university like many these days has an entrepreneurial school that offers what is called an EIR, or an Entrepreneur in Residence. Start Ups of all kinds are at the very core of the entrepreneurial school, and I have in mind the idea of originating domains for target areas around the world where business start ups are a big deal...take Austin Texas for example. I have an idea that I can't share with you now about creating domains that specifically target these areas, and will all come under; Start Ups International. The idea could be franchised, but more important it could create an opportunity for local lawyers, accountants, business consultants, developers, designers etc. to work together to help start ups do their thing. OMG, I forgot Domain Originators....duh! The name StartUpsInternational(.)com appraises at Go Daddy for $1,975, and unlike GameswithNames(.)com that appraises for just $798, it's appraisal seems to me to be more accurate:xf.confused: Note, I'll list this name on the Reg of the Day thread later.

My point is here, while it may be to late in my life to start, own and operate another business, I can certainly help an EIR get off to a good start. The one thing I know is that Start Ups International has the real potential to be a multi million dollar business.

Enjoy your day everyone, I'm headed to the gym where some of my best friends and ideas evolve:xf.grin:

Startupsinternational is a good name imo although you can't say your the originator being it was previously registered a few times:)
Good names plus business equals opportunity in my opinion. Much better than just sitting around waiting for a buyer imo. Please don't take this the wrong way but I think you may mistakenly come across to some people as pompous or arrogant. Good luck in your endeavors and maybe try to be nicer and more respectful of other people's input and not condescending. Please don't take my criticism as anything but with good intentions on my part.

Hi there...are you Tarek? The reason I ask is I learned who you are from your website @ChicagoLandAdvertising(.)com. Tarek, before I get into your comments about my appearing to be pompous, arrogant and condescending, I just wanted you to know that I didn't say I'd originated the domain StartUpsInternational(.) com, however I did say that I had "registered" it, and I even referred to it as a RescueDomain:xf.rolleyes:.....please reread my post. When I visited your site Tarek I see where you have more of a local focus for the Chicago area, and your domain name reflects it. I also noticed that your site (clean and sharp btw) caters to local businesses and even states, "Ask about our Small business Startup Packages Starting at $15 a month." Since you may have gotten a taste of what I'm thinking regarding local startups under the rescue domain, StartUpsInternational(.)com, maybe we should talk, but that's up to you.

Moving on, we all miscommunicate things when we read, write and even speak every day. My troubles, challenges, opportunities first started here on NP when I was falsely accused of cyber squatting and criminal activity due to my name being "Richard Morris", and a particular member from downunder believing the individual in this UDPR filing was me:http://www.adrforum.com/Domaindecisions/1093690.htm Tarek, between the states of Virginia and North Carolina I would venture to say there are more than 25 Richard Morris's, and the Richard Morris in this filing is not me....I swear to God. Ever since, I've been targeted by this member and other members who believe and support her. Bottomline, that's what this is all about, and I can tell you more via messaging, or via your personal email if you would like, for this is not the place to discuss it. Thanks Tarek, and it's nice to meet you.

When I visited your site Tarek I see where you have more of a local focus for the Chicago are, and your domain name reflects it.

I don't believe in parking Pages, I'd rather throw my money into the wind then be taken advantage of. The Chicagoland advertising is somewhat of a parking page that I use for numerous domains that forward to it. I just spent a few hours creating the page for identity purposes. You will notice I posted my search advertising certificate from Google on one of the pages. I acquire names not for resale but there are times I do sell to end users as most resellers offer nowhere near what I believe they are worth. I have though offered names very cheaply as a way to pay it forward to someone that I think is nice or would put it to good use. I also have another page I use when forwarding quite a few other domains that point to Strongpunch.com. as for local that is the most valuable type of traffic. I have a network targeting different Industries in local regions. I specifically only see value in .com and cctlds. I have a vehicle network of sites that Target locally also. I don't share much about the businesses but I will share the following because there's something new that I'm working on. Carlot.us, that site is a hub for locally targeted vehicle domain names to point to different sections of in the future. I must end this now as my battery is about to die at any moment and I would hate it to end in mid-sentence. Nice meeting you too.
