How to get a better .com renewal rate than $35 per year from GoDaddy?

I have a .com with GoDaddy that I'd like to renew. This domain has privacy enabled. They want $20 for the renewal, and $15 for the privacy.

Any techniques to get this a bit more reasonable?

I would just transfer out and use one of the registrars that charges around $10 per year for .com + privacy, but I don't want to have to disable privacy in order to transfer it.

I'm hoping there's a way to get even a remotely reasonable price through GoDaddy, any advice? I know I'll end up paying more than NameSilo or NameCheap, but paying 3.5x the price feels like a bit too much.

(Please note this is in CAD, if it the price seems a bit higher than you're used to.)

did it still have the "old" private whois when it got to the new registrar?

Hi stub. I dunno, I just transferred a domain from GD to DD, that had privacy enabled before during and after the transfer I didn't do anything special. Just unlocked the domain at GD, got the transfer/auth code, entered it at DD and paid for the transfer, and about a week later it arrived at DD.

How did you get the transfer code with privacy enabled at GoDaddy?

A week!!!??? Godaddy has an expedited transfer approval option that makes it possible to complete transfer under 1 hour

Agree. It's about 15 minutes or less most of the time.

I didn’t do anything special. It transferred in due course but also I didn’t have to remove privacy at any point. I didn’t really think about it since the system never prompted me to remove the privacy.

Maybe it has to do with that the receiving registrar (in this case DynaDot) accepts incoming domains with privacy enabled?

As far as the settings on the incoming transfer I “paid” (0.00 - so, no fee) for privacy on the one year renewal (extension) at DynaDot at the same time as the transfer in order.

Interesting, maybe certain registrars will require the Privacy to be removed, and others will accept it with the privacy. I may as well try transferring to Dyna first, if that's the case. I always just assumed it was GoDaddy being difficult, such is life...

My same question goes to you (as to xynames). How do you get the Auth Code when it's under privacy?

I tried it with another of mine at GoDaddy domain. This is the domain, it's under private registration:

I clicked to unlock the domain, took a bit but it happened, then clicked to have the authorization code sent, which GoDaddy indicated that it was sent.

I did not take this any further, as I don't want to transfer this particular domain out, but this is the same process I followed for the other domain, which remained under privacy and which was transferred from GDiddy to DynaDot. That domain is now at DynaDot with privacy still enabled, same as before.

From there, once you have the authorization code and commence the process, I think it is up to your incoming registrar whether it is going to accept the transfer. In my case with the other domain, incoming to DynaDot, it arrived with privacy in place with no problem, as I had checked to have privacy on the domain at the same time that I initiated the incoming transfer.

As I recall too, it took GDiddy a full day to email the authorization code.

I'll tell you what else - I seem to recall that I recently transferred another domain under full privacy from NameSilo to DynaDot too, and didn't even think about it, just did it.

We can't speak for the GoDaddy side of things (in terms of accessing the authorization code when the privacy is active) but I can confirm that you can transfer a domain to Dynadot whilst the privacy is still active.

We also made our domain privacy free to all customers in September 2017, for all TLDs that support privacy, and the privacy service is free with your renewals too so there's no extra cost for domain privacy with ourselves.

@Dynadot I appreciate you clarifying!

I've had to disable privacy when transferring from GoDaddy to @namesilo so maybe it's something on Namesilo's end that prevents an incoming transfer without privacy disabled?

If people have been able to transfer out of Godaddy without disabling privacy, and Dyna accepts domains with the privacy, sounds like I should be all set there.

Cheers thanks everyone!

That was a good move. You should maybe update that link I posted from your website? This page was found on the front page of the google search for this subject. This was also my understanding of how things were. Is there anywhere we can go on Dynadot to get all this breaking news as it happens, or a list we can subscribe to?

@xynames - I didn't want to quote your long post. Does the AuthCode get sent to the privacy address or to your email address?

When I do a transfer from GoDaddy to Dynadot I never have privacy on and the domain is never at GoDaddy long enough even to warrant it. I get the auth code in about 5 minutes (or less) from GoDaddy by email. I create the transfer at Dynadot. It takes about 2 minutes of "handshaking" before Dynadot tell me it will be in my account on Day X. I can then go into GoDaddy and approve the transfer. The domain is in my Dynadot in about 15 minutes. Done and Dusted. Usually the longest wait is after I've approved the transfer away.

Hi. The auth code arrives at the email address (my email address) that is underneath the privacy.

OK. I now see how it is possible to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy without removing the privacy. I but I don't understand why it takes a week with privacy and 15 minutes without privacy.

Thank you for letting us know, I'll let our team know as we don't want the outdated information to be appearing on Google's first page.

Major changes are usually outlined in email newsletters, or on our blog which can be found at https://www.dynadot.com/community/blog/

Our team have discussed the communication of our changes and updates recently, and any feedback or suggestions are always appreciated.

@Dynadot - Well you could have mailing lists which we could join to arranged by subject. You are probably doing this already. But I never got that email. Which happens a lot. IMHO. I don't even know where to look for this extensive list of subjects. I would definitely have subscribed to receive those notices. It "feels" like you don't want us to subscribe to these emails. They should all in one place and easy to find. IMHO.

Thank you, I think that's a great idea and I've passed the suggestion on to our team to have the option to subscribe to newsletters and updates within certain subjects or categories. We always want to be as clear and transparent as possible, so we definitely want our customers to be aware of any policy or feature changes that may occur in future.
